Chapter 20
Few years had passed since I broke up with Cody and although I've tried moving on, I still can't bring myself to love another man. I graduated from college a year ago and I decided to stay in New York to start a new life basically because I wanted to avoid Cody. Daisy had completed school three years ago and she helped me to secure a job in the hospital she worked in. I was currently twenty five years old and a junior doctor in this renowned hospital. Earlier, my parents were against my idea of staying far away from them but with time understood this is what I really wanted.
Daisy and I shared an apartment together here in New York. She had no plans of settling down as she kept hopping from one man to another. It was getting out of hand because she always brought new guys home and disposes them off after a night stand. Whoever was responsible for breaking her heart must have done his worse as her love life is a topic she never wants to talk about.
I stared at Daisy as she dolled herself up. It was very late and risky for a young woman like her but I knew nothing was going to change her mind. She looked good in the short black skirt and small blue blouse which exposed her navel piercing. “Are you off to the club again?" I asked and she nodded while paying attention to the makeup she was applying on her face. “Don't you get tired Daisy partying every Friday. Besides you just came back from your evening shift at the hospital" I reasoned out hoping to get some sense into her. “Don't wait for me Millie, I will be sleeping in a hotel today " She spoke with a grin. My mouth was agape completely shocked by her words.
“Are you sure you don't want to join me Millie. When was the last time you got laid" I chuckled and sighed. “I'm replacing Matt tonight at the hospital for his shift session so no thanks but I bet another time" She grabbed her bag and walked towards the door. “Take care of yourself Millie " With that, she walked out of the house. I actually lied about replacing a co-worker. I was not in a partying mood right now. I just want to relax in the house. I'd been tired the whole day with work.
It was past six in the morning and Daisy hadn't still arrived. She was pretty late and I was very worried. As I dressed up and grabbed my bag, ready to go look for her, she opened the door. Daisy staggered into the house and I had to help her from tripping. “Just how much did you drink yesterday to have a hungover?" I asked very angry with this irresponsible attitude of hers. Since when did she started drinking and whoring.
“Daisy can you stop accusing me like my mother. Geez I have a migraine already to deal with. Let's not talk about last night and I had a lot of fun. You don't know what you are missing " Daisy explained which I chuckled. She looked funny. I walked towards the kitchen and grabbed a glass cup to fix her a ginger tea. I'm not much of a drinker but I knew ginger tea was good for hungovers. I handed the tea to her and sat beside her on the sofa. “Thanks Millie, you are a lifesaver!" “...Hey Daisy take your time it's hot you might burn your tongue?" I shouted and she chuckled.
Today was different,it was a co-worker's wedding at the beach. Daisy knew the bride as much as I did so she was tagging along with me. It was a hot afternoon as we sat in my convertible heading towards the venue of the wedding. I was in a green silk long dress with a slit up to the thighs and had my hair in a bun with loose strands of curly hair on each side of my face. Daisy on the other hand was in a green short dress with her hair falling over her shoulder and with very bright lipstick. I parked the car few minutes away from the beach as we walked to the wedding which had already begun.
The bride who was a doctor in my department looked so beautiful and had a beautiful smile the entire time. I didn't know the groom from anywhere but I was here to have fun not take details. I was shocked when I saw who the groomsman was standing directly behind the groom. Speaking of the devil,it was Cody. He looked as handsome as ever although I didn't look bad myself. The groom must be his friend. It's been about six years since we last saw each other. I just hoped he didn't see by chance so I could leave immediately after that wedding reception. I didn't want any awkward moment at a friend's wedding.
Daisy noticed how tensed I was as she followed my line of direction. “Isn't that your jerk of an ex?" She whispered in my ears and I nodded with a shrug. “I now understand why you never got over him all this years. He's got I must say" Daisy spoke and I stared at her with shock plastered on my face. “What Millie? Don't pretend as if I'm telling lies. I knew it. He was the reason why you never stepped foot at all the blind dates I arranged for you" I chuckled feeling hot all of a sudden. “If I were you I would have said hi,who knows probably he is single ready to mingle" Daisy added and I excused myself.
It's been some minutes since I stood by the sea admiring it's view. Why did life decide to play with me in times like this. “Cody was a jerk and I can't skip the part that I still love him and seeing him today with how handsome he looked, my heart was really beating faster. “Hi Millie", someone said behind me. I knew that voice. It belonged to Cody.
“I knew it's you when I spotted you ",he added and I chuckled. I took a deep breath before turning to face him. “Hi Cody, it's been a while" I said with a bright smile. “You still look as beautiful as ever " He said with a blush and I chuckled. “Thanks for the compliment but I think I need to get back to the reception. It was nice seeing you again Cody". I walked past him heading towards the reception when he ran towards me abruptly stopping me in my tracks. I nearly tripped on the beach sand. “I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you " He quickly apologized.
“...I know I messed up our relationship at the start and I know you still haven't gotten over me. I thought I loved Melissa but after two years I felt something was missing. I never loved her. It was you I've ever loved and I've been searching for you for years to make it up to you. If you want to know I'm telling the truth, you can ask your parents. Please give me a chance Millie " Wow that was a lot to take in.
“Let go of me Cody while I'm being nice. Besides you are too late, I'm already in a relationship with someone and I really love the person". I didn't wait for him to process what I said when I walked out on him. I was happy that Daisy understood for us to leave the reception early and thank God!! She didn't ask any questions concerning my sudden sour mood. Was there really a chance between us again? Why am I even considering him after how he treated me? Cody actually cheated on me while I was away in college and although I forgave him already, I don't think I had gotten over it.
It's been a month since the encounter with Cody and he's been calling me nonstop sending love texts. I knew my friend had a role in this. It's not her fault, they all wanted to see me very happy. As it was Valentine's day, Daisy had left with her one night stand from yesterday for a fun day out. It would have been awkward if I tagged along so I stayed back home. Around midday, the doorbell rang and I hurried to open it. I thought it was Daisy who was back but when I saw Cody with the roses and a card standing right in front of my door, I got surprised.
“How did you find my house Cody. Aren't you supposed to be back to where you came from after the wedding. Why are you disturbing my peaceful life or you want me to be miserable forever. I've told you countless times on phone that I was in a relationship with someone else. Don't you get it,it won't work " I explained with my arms folded. “No one in a relationship will be staying indoors on Valentine's and I know you are still single. I'm not going to stop until you say yes". He said with a broad smile which I chuckled in response.
“Come in "I opened the door wide. “Does that mean you are giving me a chance again". He looked at me but I ignored his question. “I'm just being nice. Do you want coffee or juice?" I asked as I made my way to the kitchen. “Coffee", he shouted. I made coffee for him and poured myself a glass of juice. “Here you go " I handed over the coffee to him. “Thank you" he whispered. “No problem, thanks for the flowers as well " I took the bouquet of roses and sniffed it. It smelled really nice.
“You have a nice place", he spoke looking around the apartment. “Urgh thanks, I share with my best friend but she is currently out having fun" I explained with a smile. “I would like to take you on a date some time. What do you say to that" He asked and I nearly choked on my juice. “I will give it a thought but it's not a promise so don't get your hopes up" I explained and he laughed.
It's been weeks since Valentine's and Cody was officially my boyfriend again. I knew there was a possibility that he was going to hurt me but I decided to go with my heart. Besides I still loved him.
