Chapter 24 - A Dire Wolf's Mate

(Collin)

Everything was set in motion. I didn’t want to know when it would happen, all I wanted was to get her back here. Sacrifices had to be made in order to get what I wanted. I started my day off in my office finalizing some last-minute documents that obviously needed my attention. My father thought it was best that he took over controlling the pack until I was in my right mind again. Heather was at the pack doctor following up an appointment for her pregnancy. I still didn’t think the kid was mine, but then again, I could be wrong.

Only a few days had passed since the fundraiser and all I could think about was Ruby. I fantasized about her smooth delicate skin, her plump lips, the way her body used to arch affected by my touch. Thinking about her caused my dick to grow tight in my pants. I was about to rub one out when I heard the screams coming from outside.

I rushed out of my office to find the cause of the screams and was immediately struck in the head. The only thing I saw as my body hit the ground was members of my pack running for their lives. I could feel the blood seeping from my head as I tried to get up. I could hear the screams and someone shouting ‘Secure the Alpha’.

I woke up in the pack hospital, my eyes felt heavy and my head was pounding. I saw what was clearly a nurse walking to check a chart when her eyes spotted me.

“Oh my goddess, quick get the doctor!” She screams out.

What the hell is going on? Where am I?

The doctor walks in looking relieved to see I’m awake.

“Alpha, hello can you hear me?” He asks. Of course, I can hear him but the words aren’t coming out.

Why the hell can’t I talk? Why can’t I feel Chase? What the hell!

It seemed the doctor could still hear my mind link, as he tried to calm me.

“Alpha, you are in the pack hospital. You took a rather bad hit to the head. We had to sedate you while we operated as the hit you took caused a skull fracture. Your wolf will come back once your body has recovered from the sedative.” The doctor answers.

“As for why you can’t talk, we can fix that. Nurse, can you help me to remove the tube from his mouth?”

I watch as the doctor and nurse remove the tube, they tell me to take a breath in and out as they pull the tube out of my mouth. I cough as soon as it’s free from my throat.

“Tell me what happened.” I managed to choke out. They just stood there looking sad, not wanting to tell me what had happened. I needed answers, I was about to get out of the bed when Kyle, my beta, walked in. I felt relieved to see him but he also had the look of sorrow on his face.

“Why isn’t anyone talking? Tell me what happened?” I questioned again. Kyle finally spoke up.

“Collin, we were attacked. 100 rogues entered our territory. We fought them off, but…” His words trail off before he continues. “There were some casualties.” He says as he looks down.

“What do you mean casualties? How many warriors did we lose?” I asked, hoping it wasn’t many.

“We lost 5 warriors… And… I’m sorry Collin, your father was found dead in his office alongside his beta, Rick Hale.” Kyle said as he looked down from my eyes.

No! I knew my father would be a casualty, but Ruby’s father, this wasn’t going to be good. I didn’t anticipate that my father's Beta would still try to protect him. I knew this would happen. Maybe I should have been more open with my plan. Either way, what was done was done, no going back now.

(Alpha Michael)

The events that happened during the fundraiser left a sour taste in my mouth. I had no idea Ruby would even come back, let alone be mated to one of the most powerful Alpha’s out there. I was actually happy for her. Finding her fated mate is a wonderful gift blessed by the moon goddess herself. After everyone left, it was Heather who paid me a visit before I too settled in for the night.

“Alpha Michael… Do you have a minute for your daughter-in-law?” Heather asked.

Collin may not have liked Heather but she was perfect for the role. She had a certain elegance to her that brightened up any room she walked in. Whatever Collins’ issue with her, he would have to get over it.

“Please, you don't have to call me Alpha anymore. Call me father now! You are carrying my grandchild.” I said with a smile on my face. Heather had a worrisome look on her face and I felt troubled by it.

“Father. I’m worried…” Heather paused, she looked scared. I sat up straight in my chair and tried to reassure her. “Heather, you can tell me anything. What is troubling you?”

Heather breathed a little easier before continuing.

“I have nothing against Ruby, sir. Truly I don’t. I’m going to be a mother too, so I can sympathize with her. She has twin pups I believe to be Collins’. Her children are claimed by Alpha Karson as his heirs, but they are also heirs to the Emerald Forest pack as well.” Heather's words hit me like a moving car.

“My dear, surely you are confused…” Heather cut me off before I could continue. Placing what looked like an old pregnancy test on my desk.

“I’m most positive. She mentioned it tonight. Collin had sent out many people to look for her after he found this test the night she was banished. After tonight's events, I’m terrified to see what else he’s capable of.” I could clearly see the worry in her face. I reassured her once more and sent her to bed.

I called Rick the next morning but he never answered his phone and I couldn’t link with him as he had a block up. I left a message hoping he would call me back later.

I linked Collin telling him to come up to my office. He didn’t seem pleased about it, but I couldn’t have him running the pack with an unstable mindset.

“What do you need, father?” Collin asked, coming into my office.

“Nice to see you too, son! Let’s get straight to the point. Until you can get over this obsession with Ruby, I will be taking over the pack.” I said with an order.

Collin looked at me for a moment, then started laughing.

“Nice one pops.”

I got up from my desk, claws out and grabbed him by the throat. “I’m so glad I am entertaining you, but as you can clearly see… I’m not fucking playing.” I seethed out before dropping him.

Collin grabbed his throat, looking at me like a scared child.

“Now, pick yourself up off the floor and get out of my office.” Collin got up and quickly left. Once I knew he was out of earshot, I called Rick again.

“Alpha Michael, sorry I didn’t answer you earlier. We had an unexpected visit from Ruby. We were catching up after all these years.” Rick said as he answered the phone.

“No worries, Rick. I need to know. Is Ruby’s kids Collin’s?” I waited to hear the answer but there was only silence. I took a breath. I guess what Heather said was true.

“Rick, whatever happens, I’m going to need your help. Come by the office when you can.”

“Yes, Alpha.” Rick hung up the phone and I took out some papers and began to write three letters, one to Ruby and Alpha Karson and the other two to my grandchildren I wouldn’t be able to meet. When Rick came by, I handed the letters over to him, ordering him to put them somewhere in his home where only Ruby would know to look.

A few days later, things seemed to calm down. Collin was in his office, Heather was at her doctor’s appointment and I was sitting in my own office figuring out Collin’s mistakes with Rick. Our attention broke when screams filled the hallway.

Not even a second after the screams, my door broke down and 10 rogues charged at us. Rick took down two of them but we were no match. Rick was killed as they tore out his heart, before they took my own life.

(Ruby)

I was on my way to work at the pack school, excited about seeing all my students again. Even after I became Luna, I didn’t want to give up my job as a teacher. Karson tried to reason with me, saying it would be too much for me and I didn’t care. I would take my duties seriously as Luna, but I would also still teach. I was happy to see my students as they all sat in their seats listening to me go over some of the math problems for this week's lesson.

Everything was going great as the kids listened quietly as I solved the math problem on the board and showed them the simple steps to answering it on their own. The kids were giggling and having fun, each taking turns to come up and solve the next problem. Simple addition was always fun in my eyes.

The lunch bell rang and all the kids got up and lined up to go to the cafeteria. I got up and led the children in a single file line to the lunchroom. Upon entering, I could smell the delicious scent of cheese pizza. I sat down with the rest of the teachers, all excited about find out how mine and Karsons’ trip was.

“Luna Ruby, was it beautiful out there?” Ms Green asked. She was a fourth grade teacher and had never traveled anywhere else, other than the south.

“Please, Ms. Green it’s Ruby, and yes. The northern pack is covered with luscious greenery and tall forest trees. It truly is beautiful out there,” I replied.

Being in the south didn’t bother me all that much, but I did miss the forests and the greenery. Even when I didn’t have my wolf, taking long walks in the forest was my only escape from reality. When lunch ended, I led the kids back into the classroom and began our next lesson in art. I explained I wanted them to draw me a picture of how they saw themselves with their future wolves that they would meet one day. They all got out their coloring crayons and paper and were drawing. I walked up and down between their desks looking at each one’s drawing, giving compliments and good job’s.

I made my way back to my desk and stopped in my tracks. My hand gripped my chest and the feeling of pure agony and pain captured me. I could feel Flora whimper and cry in pain as well. What was happening? The pain kept stabbing at my heart as if I was being attacked, tears started to fall from my face, as my vision got blurry. I heard my students screaming as my knees hit the ground, my arms still clutched around my chest.

My classroom door swung open as Ms. Green and Karson ran in. Ms. Green was trying to settle the students as Karson picked me up and carried me out of the school. I knew something was wrong, this was no ordinary pain. I felt as if something was torn from me, taken away by force.
