Chapter 13 - A Dire Wolf's Mate

I grew up with Karson. We were once very close in our friendship. I was his date on many occasions, and when his Alpha, Theo, stepped down and pronounced Karson as the pack's new alpha, I was excited for him. I knew that with Karson being 25 and becoming the alpha, it came with big responsibilities, including finding a Luna, a Luna strong enough to stand by his side and lead this pack into the future. A Luna who had not just grace and beauty, someone who could give Karson an heir, and in my mind I was perfect for that position. Neither Karson nor myself had found our fated mates, and we had a lot of history together.

I got along great with his family, and on many occasions I volunteered with Luna Hope at different charities, which I hated, but never said a word about it. I dreamt of being Luna so badly that I knew which dress I would wear to my Luna ceremony, all I needed was Karson to ask me and I’d say yes. But it never came. When I returned from my studies, I couldn’t find Karson anywhere. I searched everywhere in the pack house and still no where. I took the elevator down hoping to find him, maybe in the kitchen. When the doors to the elevator opened, there stood Karson looking so refreshed. I smiled.

“Why hello Karson. Fancy meeting you here. I was just upstairs knocking on your door, when you didn't answer I figured you'd be around somewhere.” I said in my most flirtatious way..

“Olivia, how many times must I correct you? It's alpha Karson to you, and why were you looking for me?” Karson said, annoyed.

“I was hoping I could keep you company. I heard that we are hosting a rogue, and I wanted to help settle your mind.” I said as I rubbed my hand on his chest.

Kaarson grabbed my wrists and lightly shoved them off of him.

“That is quite enough from you. I told you I’m not interested.” I was upset, and I had every right to be. Karson just treated me like I was annoying him, which was not my intention. I simply turned on my heels and walked off. I’d try again. We both aren’t getting any younger. Karson is now 32 and he needs a Luna, and I’ll be damned if he finds his fated mate before I become Luna. I made sure no she-wolf looked his way, making me his only option. Certainly, with our history, he would take that into consideration.

I woke up the next morning feeling off about something but wasn't sure what it was. I brushed it off and decided that a shopping spree would distract me. I chose a simple yet sexy green mini dress that hugged my body in all the right spots, threw my hair in a perfect bun, added some makeup and grabbed my purse before heading to the mall.

A pedicure and manicure was definitely the first thing. I chose a deep red to accent my red hair. 45 minutes later, I was shopping in my favorite boutique: Loup Sexy, which meant sexy wolf in French. I spent over $600 on items I loved and that would look absolutely stunning on me. I walked around for a bit. I was feeling a bit tired so I decided to stop at the local coffee stall and grab a large Americano latte. As I was waiting for my coffee I spotted some she-wolves from my pack as well as a few that were from distant packs. I knew the one girl, Joanne Richards, Beta Luke's little sister.

“I heard your Alpha Karson has finally found his mate. Is it true?” The girl who wasn't from our pack asked, and that struck a nerve.

“Excuse me ladies. I don't think we’ve met. I’m Olivia Pearson, Karson’s childhood friend, lover and soon-to-be Luna!” I snapped through my teeth. Seeing their shock made me smirk. Soon enough, I will be his Luna, I thought to myself.

“Olivia, I didn't see you there. Hanna wasn’t trying to upset or spread any rumors, but I also heard them too. Alpha Karson has found his mate. My brother told me so.” Joanna said calmly.

“Joanna. Karson and I were going to announce that we chose to be mates rather than fated ones, since we both haven't found ours. I was already promised by Karson to be his Luna. If I find out this is some joke, I’ll have you punished severely.”

That did more than strike a nerve. If this was indeed true, how could Karson not tell me? This had to be a joke, beta Luke doesn't like me so he’s gonna spread some lies. I’ll get to the bottom of this.

“I have a large Americano latte, for Olivia.” The barista called out. I grabbed my coffee and left for the parking garage. I handed my valet ticket and waited for the man to go to retrieve my red BMW. That was a gift from Karson when I graduated high school.

I drove back to the pack house in such a hurry. When I arrived, I spotted Luna Hope and Previous Alpha Theo outside tending to some flowers in the front. I pulled up, got out and went to say hello.

“Luna, your garden is such a refreshing sight these days. Alpha Theo hello.”

“Ah. Olivia. What a pleasant surprise. How are you?” Luna Hope said, surprised. Alpha Theo nodded at me, acknowledging me.

“Oh, I’m good, I heard a foul rumor while I was at the mall earlier. I knew it couldn’t be true.” I told her in my most innocent tone. I was about to tell her the rumor when I spotted Karson coming up to us both.

Goddess, I swear I will be this man’s Luna! I thought to myself.

“What’s going on here? Olivia, are you alright?” Karson asked with a little concern.

“Ah Karson, your back. We sent your gamma Nate, to deliver an invite to Ruby for dinner tonight. We hope you don't mind,” Alpha Theo said.

Who the fuck is Ruby? Now I need to know. I thought to myself again.

“I’m fine, just a small incident, nothing big. Who is Ruby, by the way?” I questioned, looking irritated.

“Ruby is Karson’s mate.” Hope chirped happily.

I tensed as I heard the forbidden word. This isn't possible! That meant Joanna was telling the truth, “I’m sorry. Could you say that again?” I said dryly.

“My mate. I finally found my mate. And, no, I don't mind at all, father, it would give me a chance to know my mate better.” Karson said.

I felt all the blood drain from my face. It’s supposed to be me, not this…person!

“Then it’s settled. Oh, Olivia, would you care to help me with the staff to prepare. You're more than welcome to join us,” Hope said.

“I wouldn't mind at all, Luna Hope, I’d be honored. I would also love to get to know the future Luna,” I said, with a slight mischievous tone.

Karson had a hazy look in his eyes. Yes, he was talking to his wolf again. Still, I had better find out as much as I can about this Ruby girl. Maybe I can run her off and still have Karson for myself.

“Olivia, can I have a moment with you?” Karson asked, bringing me back to reality and heading into the house with Luna Hope..

“Of course, alpha. Anything for you.” I turned to Luna Hope, “I’ll be a quick moment Luna.” I said with a smile on my face.

“Don't take too long, I’ll meet you in the kitchen.” Luna Hope said as she and Alpha Theo disappeared into the house.

Karson grabbed me by the arm. “I don’t know what kind of game you're playing at, but if you mess this up, in any way, I’ll have you sleeping in the cells for a week. Do I make myself clear?”

“Alpha, I wouldn't dare do anything like that.” I said as I kissed his cheek and walked up to the pack house.

I helped with the dinner menu, and the table placements, and the wine selection. This was what I was meant to do. I had been trained to be Luna since Karson and I became friends. It’s all I ever knew and I wasn’t about to let anyone take that from me.

I returned to my room on the third floor of the pack house to get ready for dinner. I entered my shower and washed myself delicately. If I was gonna meet this tramp who claims herself to be the alpha’s mate, I was going to show her who the real Luna is. I searched my closet to find the sexiest dress I had, the black tight fitted strapless ball gown. I shimmied myself into the gown, pushed up my boobs and adorned the emerald diamond necklace Karson gifted me on my 18th birthday.

We are looking more fierce tonight. What’s the occasion? My wolf Pearl asked. She wasn’t a bad looking wolf, red fur with white covered spots in the shape of pearls.

“We are gonna win back Karson! Because I’m the only Luna who should be standing at his side!” I said through clenched teeth.

I entered the dining area to see everything set up perfectly. Of course, I’m the one who set it up. I saw Karson and Alpha Theo and walked over. They're talking about the Alpha fundraiser that’s coming up.

“I got an invite to that as well. Are you planning on going as well, Karson?” I asked, placing my arm on his shoulder. I heard Luna Hope coming from the front room and all eyes turned from me to a woman I'd never seen before.

This must be the bitch who stole Karson from us. I said to Pearl as she pushed through to see with my eyes.

Ha. She doesn’t look like much from what I can see. You have nothing to worry about. Pearl says to me.

“Hello Alpha Karson,” the woman said.

“Ruby, you don’t have to call me Alpha, it's Karson to you. You are the future Luna.” Karson replied while reaching for her hand to kiss.

She doesn't look like much, yet Karson is flaunting over her.

“So you must be the fated…mate” I said as I smirked with my arm gently lying on Karson’s shoulder.

“I’m Olivia, Karson’s childhood friend.” I extended my hand expecting her to take it, and she simply ignored me. She simply smiled and replied “It’s nice to meet you, and if you don't mind. Could you please remove your arm from my mate.”

The way she said it had my wolf whimpering.

What the actual fuck? Who the hell is she? Only an alpha could make my wolf hide with her tail behind her.

Karson looked overjoyed to hear this snake say ‘my mate’. I quickly removed my arm and stepped back, irritated.

Karson whispered something in her ear before pulling out the chair. That pissed me off even more. I kept up with conversations with Luna Hope and Alpha Theo, while drinking my wine. I kept my eyes on Karson, and every so often I’d see this bitch looking at me, really starting to piss me off.

“Ruby, what are your plans for next weekend?” Karson asked her, making me choke on my wine.

“Besides taking care of my pups. Nothing.” She replied.

Wait a damn minute! She has pups with another man? Oh, this is juicy.

“Karson, you didn't tell me your mate had pups.” I said, shoving myself in their conversation.

“ Who’s the father?” I asked with an attitude. That struck a nerve as I watched her tense up.

“Yes, I have pups. And their father is none of YOUR concern.” The way she said it sent shivers up my spine. Her tone was stronger than that of an alpha’s.

“Olivia, you are overstepping your bounds.” Karson growled using his alpha tone, causing me to whimper some more. When the night ended, Karson decided he would take the bitch home, so I stepped away, grabbed my phone and dialed a number.

“Ya, hey it’s me. I need you to dig up some dirt for me, can you do that?” I said talking on the phone. “What’s the name?” The mysterious man on the other end replied.

“Find out exactly who this Ruby Hale bitch is, and get back to me.” I said.

“Consider it done.” and with that i hung up the phone.

OK Ruby… Time to find out who you are.
