Chapter 94 Back to being nemesis
Chapter 94: Back to Being Nemesis
Linda got back to her team and Golden handed her a bottle of water. “That was awesome. That last question was unexpected and you handled it well.”
“Wow Linda you are so smart. How did you know the answer to that Latin question? For a moment I was scared, but then you hit the buzzer and gave the correct answer.” Another team member said.
“I'm not just beautiful you know, I've got brains too. I've seen an inscription with those exact words before. I just remembered it.” Linda responded casually but obviously enjoying the attention.
Fab and Alex approached Golden's team. Linda had gone to the restroom with her croonies still praising her for answering the Latin question.
“You guys seemed to have worked out your differences. I've been watching you two closely.” Fab said, “you guys were acting like best friends.”
“Oh no, we still hate each other's guts trust me. We just decided to put that aside and work for the greater good.
Don't underestimate the power of wanting to win.” Golden said before taking a sip of water.
“Well I'm rooting for you guys gigi.” Alex said. “Make sure you crush the competition,” she said with a dramatic flare.
“Hey! You know I'm standing right here right?” Fab gave Alex a questioning look.
Alex looked at Fab, then Allan who just arrived and then turned to Golden and said: “Remember, crush the competition.”
“Geez! Thanks Alex,” Allan said to her with an eye roll. “Let's go celebrate our win after this okay?” He said to Golden.
Fab smacked Allan on the chest. “Whose side are you on dude?”
Rubbing his chest and smiling he said: “Doesn't matter whose side I'm on. We celebrate regardless of whoever wins.
Besides you guys are invited since a win for one is a win for all.”
Fab shook his head. “You are hopeless.”
It was soon time for the final round. The moderator informed the team members that for the final round, they could communicate with the rest of their teammates before giving an answer.
It was the Think Like a Doctor round. Each team would have 60 seconds to answer each question.
They would answer two questions each and the team with the most correct answer wins.
They drew ballot and Team Violet picked first.
Moderator: “Here's your question: “A patient suddenly develops severe chest pain radiating to the left arm. Which enzyme would be most helpful to confirm the diagnosis?”
Team Violet quickly huddled together. Allan was familiar with this case because Rema had suffered something similar before.
Because of Rema's congenital heart disease, Allan was always very attentive and paid attention to his diagnosis and treatment.
He quickly supplied the answer to Fab who then hit the buzzer.
Moderator: “What's your answer?”
Fab: “Troponin.”
Moderator: “That is correct. Team Orange you are up. Here's your question: “A patient presents with polyuria, polydipsia, and unexplained weight loss. Which condition is most likely?”
Team Orange also huddled and discussed quickly. They had two answers in mind but Golden had read a lot about weight loss and although the question was straightforward, it could easily be misdiagnosed.
Their time was almost up. She asked Linda to trust her and gave her an answer.
“If we fail this, it's on you Fatty.” Linda said doubtful.
“Sure, now press the buzzer, we are almost out of time.” Golden accepted without hesitation.
Linda immediately hit the buzzer.
Moderator: “What's your answer?”
Linda: “Diabetes mellitus”
Moderator: (He paused for a while) “That is correct.”
Team Orange heaved a sigh of relief. For a moment, they thought they had failed.
Moderator: “Team Violet you are up. Your question is: Why is carbon monoxide poisoning particularly dangerous compared to hypoxia from low oxygen?”
Fab: “It binds hemoglobin with high affinity, preventing oxygen delivery.”
Moderator: “That is correct. Team Orange if you fail this next question, Team Violet wins.
Here's your question: “Why are beta-blockers contraindicated in some asthma patients?”
Golden smiled when she heard the question. She had asthma so this question was like asking, what she had for breakfast.
She told Linda the answer immediately and she didn't even question it and pressed the buzzer.
Linda: “They can cause bronchoconstriction”
Moderator: “That is correct. It appears both teams have answered their questions correctly.
We would now proceed to the tie breaker round. The team with the fastest finger gets to answer the question. If they get the answer right, they win.”
Moderator: “After a hurricane-related flood in South Florida, several patients present with fever, myalgia, and conjunctival suffusion after wading through contaminated water. Which infection is most likely responsible?”
Both teams huddled to discuss. While discussing, Linda had one hand stretched towards the buzzer and immediately they reached a conclusion, she immediately pressed the buzzer.
Fab was one second late and hoped Linda failed the question so he could get a go. Deep down he knew the possibility was slim.
He looked towards Golden and saw her smile, he knew immediately that they had already won.
Linda: “Leptospirosis”
Moderator: “That is correct. After three rounds, Team Orange have emerged winners with a landslide victory. Congratulations!”
Team Orange immediately rushed forward and hugged each other.
When Linda and Golden realized that they were hugging, they immediately let go, clearing their throats and avoiding each other's eyes.
“Congratulations Linda, we won. We make a pretty good team.” Golden said with a smile.
“Yeah you are right. About the team of course. Congratulations to you too. Well I have to go celebrate with my friends.
I would have invited you to join us, but we are not friends so..”
“I totally understand. Go have fun.” Golden replied.
Linda left with her friends happy that they had won, while Golden turned and went to her friends.
Alex immediately hugged her. “Congratulations Gigi, I knew you would crush them.”
“Thanks Alex, but it was Linda that answered the questions.” Golden responded with a smile.
“Oh please girl, stop trying to be humble. We all know that you supplied her with all the answers” Fab said pulling her for a side hug.
“I saw the awkward hug between you and Linda, what was that all about?” Allan asked.
“Oh it's nothing serious. We are back to being Nemesis again. That was just us trying to sign off from our deal.” Golden said carefree.
