Chapter 62 Defining feelings
Chapter 62: Defining Feelings
Alex was getting ready to settle in for the night.
It had been a very long day filled with different levels of emotions.
She felt very touched by the gifts her friends had given her.
When she had decided to move to Florida six months ago, she didn't know what to expect.
She didn't think she would end up with two people that had come to mean the world to her.
She had just worn her sleep wear and was about to get into bed when her phone dinged with an incoming message.
Varney: “I'm outside your house ”
Alex had totally forgotten that she was supposed to have a conversation with Varney regarding tomorrow's dinner.
People always felt she had no self awareness when in fact she did. She just didn't like to overthink things.
Alex: “???”
Varney: “come outside or I will come in”
Alex: “give me a minute”
Alex hurriedly changed into home clothes. Every time she was with Varney she always had a headache.
That guy had a knack for stressing her. It was as if she had offended him in the previous life and he was back for revenge.
Varney was parked at the opposite side of the house.
He saw Alex step out in purple fluffy hoodie with bunny ears and a bunny slippers.
Seeing her dressed like that gave him a warm and fuzzy feeling.
Alex sighted the black maybeach parked across the street and hopped to it.
“Get in.” Varney said. “Interesting choice of outfit. I never pegged you to be the bunny type” he said with raised eyebrow.
“Was about to sleep when you decided you had something against my peace.
So you take what you see.” Alex said rolling her eyes.
“You know you look cute whenever you roll your eyes ” Varney said smiling.
“Varney Nixon! If you pulled me out of bed just to tease me, I swear I'll...”
Alex was a few seconds from snapping
“Strap in, we are going on a night drive” Varney quickly said before Alex really snapped.
Varney drove them to a very quiet part of the city.
He parked the car right under a bridge where one could see the city from a distance.
It was a picturesque view.
The light shone over the water, soft humming of Christmas carols coming from the city.
The air sweetly filled with the aroma of Christmas turkey gently sizzling in the oven.
Varney turned and looked at Alex.
“How did you know where my parents grave where?”
Alex paused.
She wasn't expecting this question. She would have given a sarcastic reply if it were any other day.
“I did some digging after our talk the night Gigi had a panic attack” she replied quietly.
“Why?” Varney asked still looking at her.
At this point, Alex turned to face Varney. She had led Golden unto the path of healing but she knew he also needed to heal.
Most times people only focused on the person hurt. They failed to realize that the people around them often times carried twice the burden.
She knew how much Varney loved Golden and could feel he was carrying so much weight on his shoulders.
“It was time to heal.” she said softly. “It was time to let go of the past hurt. I am sorry if I overstepped, but...”
Varney reached over his seat, cupped her face while she was still speaking and kissed her.
It was slow at first. He waited for her to grant him access. When she did, he gradually deepened the kiss.
He poured his emotions into the kiss.
Pain, gratitude, and relief. He expressed all with the kiss.
Alex didn't know how to react when Varney made the move to kiss her at first.
Before she could think about it, her body had already reacted and she found herself kissing him back.
Then she tasted his tears.
She didn't know why, but his tears burned her lips. And at that moment, she wanted to take away all his pain.
She slowly lifted her hands and wrapped around his neck and deepened the kiss.
After a while, the kiss gradually ended. And Varney pulled Alex into a tight hug.
He took in her scent, trying to calm his racing heart.
He broke the hug and looked into her eyes.
“Alex do you like me?”
Alex didn't know what to say. She had avioded processing her feelings so she didn't know what she felt for Varney.
She looked at him unsure.
“I'm going to be honest with you Alex. I don't want to play games with you.
Alex, I have fallen in love with you. What I just want to know is if you like me, even if it's just a tiny bit.” Varney said with all seriousness.
Alex was shocked. She didn't expect Varney to say he had fallen in love with her.
If he had said he liked her, it would have been easier to accept. But something inside told her he wasn't joking.
And somehow, she didn't dislike the idea of him being in love with her even though she didn't know how she felt yet.
So she did something spontaneous. She kissed him.
“Look Varney, I can't say I'm in love with you because I have never been in love before.
But I think I might like you a bit. I don't know if that's enough for you ” Alex said sincerely, not wanting to deceive him.
“That's all I need for now. I would help you to fall in love with me until you can't bare to leave me.” Varney said as he gently carexed her cheek.
“Then how about we try dating and see if I can fall in love with you.” Alex said making a decision to move forward.
“Like a trial relationship?” Varney asked with a smirk.
“Yeah something like that. And if it's okay, can we not tell anyone about it?
Right now they think we are fake dating and I would like to keep it that way until I am sure of my feelings just in case things don't work out the way we want.” Alex said.
“Fine. We would do it your way, but I can assure you—you will fall in love with me” Varney said smiling.
With a slow smirk, Alex said:
“Confident much?”
“I never do anything I'm not confident in. Besides I am very lovable.”
With that, Varney leaned in and kissed her again.
