Chapter 56: Alex Has a Boyfriend
“You are joking right dad?” Alex asked still shocked.
“Nope! I planned on inviting her over for Christmas dinner as a surprise but you guys just had to ruin it.”
“I don't believe you. Let me see her picture” Alex said still not convinced.
Prof Chen pulls out his phone and showed her a picture.
“Damn! Who knew you still had game dad. She is stunning.” Alex said wide eyed.
Then she passed the phone to Golden and Fab and finally to her Nana.
“You seem to have a type. She looks a bit like mum. Let me guess, she's from Texas?” Alex said smiling.
“What gave it away?” Prof Chen asked.
“She has that Southern look. I know a cowgirl when I see one. Plus she's wearing cowboy boots in the picture.” Alex responded.
“You are not mad are you?” He asked carefully.
“Of course not. If anything, I'm ecstatic for you. I always felt you held back because of me.
Now I don't have to bother anymore. You're someone else's problem now” she said relieved.
“Gosh Alex, you sure have a weird way to showing love.
Now I don't feel bad anymore for the way you treat me. If this is how you love your dad, then you are indeed kind to me” Fab said.
“Im glad you finally realize that I'm good to you.” Alex said with a smirk.
“If Gigi and Fab are dating, and Chen has a girlfriend, then that leaves only you Alex.” Nana turned to Alex who was about to bolt.
“Alexandria Xinyi Chen! Take one step and you will kneel on the washboard to your ancestors for the entire night” Nana Chen said with a stern voice.
“Woah Nana! I was just going to use the restroom.” Alex said sitting back down.
“You didn't have to go ancestral on me. Really the washboard?”
“Do you want to see if I am joking?” Nana asked as she sipped her wine.
Alex gave her dad a pleading look.
“You are on your own Xinyi” he raised his hands in surrender.
“Rember Mr Chao? We met him once. He's son returned from abroad and is looking for a wife.
I think you will make a fine couple”
“Actually Nana Chen. Xinyi is not single ” Fab said out of nowhere.
“She's not?” Nana Chen asked surprised.
Golden and Alex looked at Fab with the “what are you up to look”
“This should be interesting.” Prof Chen shook his legs enjoying every bit of the drama.
“Well go on? You don't drop that kind of a bombshell and not explain.” Nana Chen looked at Fab.
As if realizing something. Golden suddenly smiled.
“Alex does indeed have a boyfriend.”
She ignored Alex's look and continued.
“In fact they've been secretly dating for the past two months.”
Alex felt a headache coming on. She knew that whatever Golden was planning will not end well.
Fab caught on quickly and smiled at Golden as they both exchanged a knowing look.
“Professor Chen. You remember that exchange program we went for in Africa two months ago that lasted for six weeks? Fab said.
“Yeah I remember. You were on the team too?” Prof Chen asked.
“Yeah I was the third and only guy on the trip. Well until a week to the end when another guy joined us” Fab said.
Alex as if finally realizing something muttered under her breathe
“Fab don't you dare!”
“What's all the mystery about? Will someone tell me who Xinyi's boyfriend is or do I need to beat it out of you guys. Nana asked getting irritated.
“Actually Nana, Alex, I mean Xinyi is dating my brother Varney Nixon.” Golden suddenly smiled.
There was a moment of silence. Prof Chen looked at Alex surprised.
Fab dared her to deny it and risk Nana marrying her off to a total stranger.
Golden gave her a sorry it's for you own good look.
Nana looked at her shocked and then a bright smile suddenly appeared on her face.
“Can I see a picture of your brother?” Nana asked.
“Sure.” Golden pulled up a picture and showed Nana Chen.
“Xinyi! He is a hunk. Better than anyone I would have introduced you to.” Nana said with a satisfied smile.
“You hear that Xinyi? He's a hunk!” Fab said enjoying Alex suffering a little too much.
“Then it's settled. Xinyi invite him over for Christmas dinner. You two are also invited” Nana said to Gigi and Fab.
“We wouldn't miss it for anything in the world right babes?” Fab said smiling at Gigi.
“We certainly won't.” Gigi responded laughing.
“Okay okay I've had a very long day. I need to go rest. I'm not young anymore.” Nana said.
“You could have fooled me.” Alex said.
“I wouldn't respond to that. You are someone elses problem now” Nana said throwing Alex's words right back at her.
“Touche! Nana. You made Alex speechless to the extent her mouth is open.” Fab said excited
“As far as I'm still alive, I remain the boss. After I am gone, then you can take over.” Nana smirked as she stood and left the dinning hall.
“Did that old lady just shade me?” Alex asked in disbelief.
“Yes I did. Deal with it!” Nana shouted from the passage.
Fab fell off his chair laughing. “God I love your Nana!”
“Honey are you really dating Gigi's brother?
You know once you bring him over for dinner, there's no going back?”
Prof Chen asked Alex. He knew that it might have just been a joke to try to get out of Nana's matchmaking.
He was giving her an opportunity to pull out before it was too late.
“Well I guess I am dating Varney. Better him than some random stranger.
“Don't worry dad. I'm not one to be easily tied down. Once I don't like someone, not even a gun to my head will make me stay”.
Golden felt Alex just subtly admitted to liking Varney.
Her job was done. It was up to Varney to win her heart.
She had opened a door for him. How he would keep the door open was totally up to him.
