Chapter 50 Alex, the one-woman show
Chapter 50: Alex, the One-Woman Show
Alex was unusually happy on the way home. She couldn't sit still even for a second.
Golden was the designated driver since she was the only one that didn't drink at dinner.
Someone had to be responsible and Golden chose to be that someone.
She couldn't risk them getting pulled over for driving under the influence.
So when Alex and Fab began drinking, she stuck to water.
She had learned something new about Alex tonight and was pretty amazed.
Alex did have a rich and interesting background and she enjoyed getting to know her gradually.
Although she knew that three glasses of wine weren't enough to get Alex and Fab high, she didn't want to take chances.
The Alex sitting beside her and fiddling with with her phone seemed rather happy, than high.
“Someone seems rather excited. Care to share?” Golden stopped at a red light and turned to Alex.
“You would know soon” she responded with a giggle.
“Go. The light has turned green” she signaled.
Alex shot a text to Varney
Alex: “Are you home?”
Varney: “Why? You miss me?”
Alex: “Answer the question?”
Varney: “I am. Why?”
Alex ignores Varney and drops her phone. She had gotten the response she wanted.
Nixon Estate...
The moment they got home, Alex took the step two-by-two straight to the room to drop her bag.
Then she rushed over to Varney's room. Knocked and opened his door before he even responded.
He was in the middle of wearing his shirt when she barged in.
She quickly looked at his albs and nodded approvingly.
“Nice body she said”. Then she grabbed him and dragged him all the way to the small cozy palour that separated his room from Golden's.
She pushed him to sit and saw Golden walk in.
“Good. Everyone is here now.”
Varney didn't know what to make of Alex. She was one hell of a woman.
She had barged in on him changing and didn't look away like most people would.
Instead she looked at him and commented on his body.
Her gaze at that moment stirred something in him. And he felt a sense of pride when she complemented him.
Varney looked to Golden to know if she had an idea what this was about.
She shrugged her shoulders and went to get comfortable on one of the couches.
Then as if a switch had been flipped, Alex launched into a Broadway production of what had transpired at school.
Golden couldn't help but burst into laughter because Alex was terrifyingly accurate.
Linda's spiteful voice, Golden's calm smile, Fab's sarcasm...all of it were perfectly spot on.
Varney watched the performance seriously at first, then began occasionally giving Golden shocked looks.
He had expected short comments on the photos. What he wasn't expecting was a full blown telenovela series.
Mid-act, Alex paused to show him the photoshopped picture and he didn't even time to be angry.
The scene of the drama changed.
He shot Golden an amazed and proud look.
Golden giggled and focused on Alex's performance. She knew the next scene that was to come.
Alex smoothly enacted the pavilion scene like a true professional.
The voice, posture, gesture. Everything exaggerated to perfection.
Golden's eyes widened. “Is that how I looked?” she wondered to herself.
Varney raised an eyebrow when Alex declared dramatically:
“MY BESTIE AND BOYFRIEND ARE WAITING FOR ME”
He expected anything but that and looked at Golden shocked.
“You said what?” he asked.
Before she could respond, Alex fell into his arms theatrically as her performance continued and she enacted her “death at the moment scene”
Varney didn't know what to make of the woman in his arms.
She found new ways to torture him all the time.
He took in her scent. The lavender and peaches that has haunted his sleep every night.
Before he could sink into it. She got up and took a dramatic bow.
Although he felt a sudden sense of loss. He still clapped at her stellar performance.
Golden also clapped. Another layer had been added.
Alex the performer.
Varney then turned to Golden.
“So are you dating Fabulous now?” He asked.
“He seems like a great guy.
He's from a great family,
I wouldn't mind him for a brother-in-law.
At least he would treat you right...”
“V just stop okay?” Golden raised her hands to cut him off lest he goes on and on.
“I was just improvising. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I haven't thought far ahead yet.”
“I know you love me, but I don't need you to play matchmaker okay?”
“Well a brother is allowed to dream” Varney said in surrender.
Alex opened the small fridge and grabbed a bottle of water to drink as she watched the exchange between Varney and Golden.
She had just finished her one-woman-show and needed to hydrate.
Although she was totally against matchmaking, she couldn't blame Varney for trying.
If there was something she loved about Varney, it was his fierce dedication towards Golden.
Sometimes she wished that she had a brother like him to protect her.
Maybe she wouldn't have gone through half of what she went through as a child with a brother like Varney.
She had become fierce and strong for herself.
Although she was always at loggerheads with Fabulous, he was truly an amazing guy.
She had seen him try hard to get Golden to cheer up while they were in Africa and this whole fiasco started because of him.
They had started out as enemies when he had been paired with Linda for the Toxicology project.
They saw a whole new person when they went to Africa.
Gradually he became a part of their gang and he is fiercely loyal.
Anything that concerned Golden, he took seriously. Alex could see why Varney would want to matchmake him with Golden.
This whole thing started as a game of cat and mouse. No one envisioned that it would turn out like this.
Even Golden herself didn't think she would react the way she did. Yet twisted the whole thing and landed them in a quagmire.
To proceed or not to proceed was the big question even Golden could not answer.
As far as today was concerned, she had earned the title of “Game Master”
Tomorrow would take care of itself.
