Chapter 166 A cosmic joke
Chapter 166: A Cosmic Joke
“Fair enough. I guess I see what you mean. I really was in love with him.” Golden admitted.
“But Dr. Mendez, he certainly is an upgrade from Allan in every department and he seems smittened by you.
I wasn't joking when I said he's everyone's crush at the hospital, but like he said, he truly doesn't see anyone.” Linda rushed to add so Golden doesn't misunderstand.
Golden laughed. “It's fine Linda. I trust him. I trust his love for me, and I'm certain he wouldn't cheat on me.”
“Yeah. Besides with Alex around, I doubt he would think about it. Plus you have me too. I'll make sure to help you ward away all the vipers.” Linda said with conviction.
“Uhh! That's so sweet. Thank you.” Golden said with genuine gratitude. “With you and Alex around, I'm sure I can sleep with my two eyes closed in Northbridge. Although I doubt there would be any need to watch Xander closely though.”
“I'm just so happy you finally have someone who loves you genuinely Golden. You guys are a perfect match.”
“Thanks Linda. I think we should go now, the movie should be starting soon.”
They left the restroom and went back to meet their boyfriends chatting happily, like they've known each other for a long time.
That was something unique about men, Unlike the tension that often lingered between women meeting for the first time, the men seemed to settle into easy conversation almost instantly.
They walked into the theater together. Golden, Xander, Linda and Steve sat on the same row with a few seats separating them.
Allan and Octavia were seated three rows behind them on an elevated platform. Allan watched as Xander put his hands over Golden's shoulders and she leaned into him.
She had truly moved and that left him full of regrets. If he thought he had a chance to win her over before, now he knew he didn't stand a chance.
All the ladies at the hospital were seriously crushing on Xander but in the three years he had been there, he had never seen Xander give any lady as much as a smile.
He was polite but he kept his distance. He wondered how he was even able to approach Gigi and how they had managed to start dating.
While everyone enjoyed the movie, Allan sat miserably and watched Golden and Xander instead.
At some point, he brought out his sketchbook and started to draw, but he noticed he was distracted and did multiple sketches of Gigi instead.
Meanwhile, Gigi sat oblivious to what was going on behind her. She and Xander chatted occasionally about the plot of the movie and fought over her popcorn.
The movie lasted for two hours and soon it ended and everyone left the theater.
Xander received a call on their way to the car and it seemed to be about work so Gigi offered to drive.
On their way home, he received another call. This time, it wasn't from the hospital. It had to do with one of his other businesses.
Xander owned a chain of Mexican restaurants and the call was about one of his restaurants. He spoke to the caller in Spanish.
Although Gigi had taken Spanish classes, she wasn't too fluent in the language. She could pick out one or two things from what he was saying, but she didn't understand most of what he said because he was speaking rapidly.
The call went on till they got to the house and Xander handed her the keys to the front door when they parked the car.
Xander put the call on hold and turned to Gigi. “Sorry princess, I promise I'll be done with the call in five minutes. Why don't you go up and turn on the jacuzzi, I'll be up before you are done.” he said giving her a kiss.
“Okay. Five minutes baby, don't keep me waiting or I'll have a bath without you.” Golden said, kissing him back and entering into the house.
The minute Golden stepped into the house, she perceived a light scent of a perfume that didn't belong to her, and was sure it didn't belong to Xander instead.
She had a keen sense of smell and immediately picked up on the scent when she entered.
She tried dismissing it as nothing but the scent grew stronger as she went up the stairs towards the bedroom.
She was beginning to tense up but she told herself there was no need to panic. She entered the room and did a quick eye sweep and everything was just as they had left it.
Just as she was about to heave a sigh of relief, the bathroom door opened and a lady stepped out of the bathroom wearing Xander's shirt and had a towel wrapped around her head.
The lady hadn't noticed her yet as she turned back into the bathroom like she had forgotten something.
Golden froze for a moment and felt an attack starting to come up. She hadn't had an asthma attack in a very long time, but she was about to have one now.
She quickly reached for her inhaler in her purse and took two puffs as she tried desperately to calm down.
This couldn't be happening again. Why did this always have to happen to her? She had made a silent vow at her parents’ grave to not misunderstand Xander no matter what and to weather whatever storm came their way.
Was the universe trying to test her? Why was there a woman in Xander's house, wearing his shirt and coming out of his bathroom?
Was this supposed to be a cosmic joke to see how she would react? Even if it was, why did the universe decide to test her with the same woman that caused her last relationship to end?
Golden stood at the same spot, trying not to break down, and at the same time, she was trying to keep the panic attack at bay.
Her instinct told her to run, her heart told her to stay and understand what was going on. There had to be an explanation, and so with so much struggle, she decided to stay put.
