Chapter 148 Treasure from afar
Chapter 148: Treasure From Afar
“I see you've made up your mind. As long as you are truly happy, then I support you. I wouldn't ask you what happened, when you are ready to talk about it, I will be here to listen to you.” Varney said.
Alex woke up when they arrived at the estate. She went up with Gigi to the bedroom to freshen up.
While she was doing her night routine, she saw Gigi packing her suitcase.
“I see you went shopping, did you get anything for me?” she asked.
“Of course I did. Yours is in the bag over there.” Golden said, pointing to a bag by the corner. “So anyways, I broke up with Allan tonight.” Golden said casually.
And before Alex could say anything or get out of her shock, she continued. “I don't want to talk about it so please don't ask.
All I want you to know is that I am fine, truly fine. And I am going back to England tomorrow.” she dropped another bomb. “And before you ask, I'm not running away. If anything, I am happy to go back to England.” Golden said.
“Okay girl, I hear you. As long as you are fine, that's okay for me. What time does your flight leave tomorrow?” Alex asked.
“It leaves at noon. I'm really going to miss you. Hurry up and marry V already so that we can be fully sisters.” Golden said to Alex as she pulled her into a tight hug.
Northbridge....
It was 7 pm by the time Golden finally arrived at Northbridge and she was bone-dead tired.
She had flown to London and then took a train directly to Northbridge. Varney had offered to let the driver take her from London to Northbridge, but she insisted on going by train.
Elsa and Kayla were surprised to see her. They weren't expecting her till the weekend, but were glad she was back nonetheless.
Golden gave them the gifts she had gotten for them before retiring to her room to rest.
By 8 pm, Elsa knocked on Golden's door. “Hey girl, come out and have some food. I made spaghetti and meatballs.” she said.
Golden came out of her room grateful that Elsa cooked because she was hungry and wasn't ready to go eat canteen food.
She ate and joined the girls to watch a movie. Then she listened to them talk about their volunteering experience so far.
The girls stayed up till very late, chatting and watching movies. They decided to watch light hearted sitcoms and soon Golden fell asleep on the rug.
In the weeks that followed, Golden got busy and swamped with both school work and clinical rotations.
She was gradually getting noticed by her professors and students alike. The good thing about Northbridge was that because it had the best minds, there was serious competition.
No one's place was guaranteed, and a small slip can guarantee someone else taking your position.
Everyone was invested in giving their best and instead of strife and jealousy, fair competition and academic brilliance shone more.
Florida...
Xander had been caught in a quagmire of indecision. It ha been four months since he overheard Golden's discussion with Linda and he still didn't know when was the right time to call her.
He wanted to give her space and time to heal. Making a move might be met with resistance and he didn't want to mess up his chances.
In a way, he was happy that she had broken up with her boyfriend Allan, but he didn't like what the breakup did to her.
He had not expressed his feelings to her yet, but the first day he saw her, he fell deeply in love with her.
To him, she was a treasure that he admired from afar. He loved her so he stayed emotionally away from her while she was in a relationship.
He knew she was one to love deeply and stay true to commitment. She was quick to clarify and stay that she had a boyfriend the first time they got talking.
He saw the way she interacted with her friends and knew she was very principled when it came to her feelings.
She was everything he wanted in a woman. But how does he tell a woman he has secretly admired for two years that he has been in love with her from the moment he set his eyes on her without sounding like a creep?
They had a good thing going on. She saw him as a friend and possibly mentor. But how does he move from the mentor zone to the boyfriend zone?
Xander looked at his phone for the umpteenth time and decided to send a message. He had been distracted since he got to the hospital, but luckily, he didn't have too many patients to attend to.
Xander: “Hey Gigi, how are you today?”
Golden surprisingly was online. He didn't expect her to be online and just sent the message just to pacify himself.
Golden: “Hey Xander, it's been a while. Why are you chatting during work hours? Shouldn't you be focused on attending to patients?”
Xander: “Well it's actually my break time. I have an hour break before I have to get back to work.”
Golden: “That's fine then. So what's up?”
Xander was lost on what to say. Why had he chatted her up in the first place? He immediately thought of something to keep the conversation going.
Xander: “I need your help with something. My friend's daughter is turning twelve this weekend and I'm kind of lost on what to get her.
She's my goddaughter and she specifically told me to get her something really nice. Usually I just give her mum money to get her what she needs, but I'm trying to be intentional this time around.”
Golden: “I'm really tired right now and don't want to keep typing because this is going to take a while. Can I switch to video call instead?”
Xander felt his heart thump when he read Golden's message. He hadn't seen her face in more than two years.
The beach didn't count because she was in her lowest moment and what he saw was her back and side view.
And the other time they had spoken when she needed help with her exams was on normal call.
Golden wasn't a social media person and she hardly posted pictures and videos of herself.
He hesitated before accepting her video call request. He adjusted his ward coat, ran his finger through his hair and even sprayed his pocket perfume.
After spraying the perfume, he realized that she couldn't perceive it through the phone and laughed at himself for behaving like a teenager.
The bottom line is that he wanted to look good for her. He had also been away for a while so she too would be seeing him for the first time in a long time.
