Chapter 138 Getting back to the top
Chapter 138: Getting Back To The Top
London was exciting. Golden hadn’t realized how much she missed her family until she was with them again in London.
She missed being with Alex and Fab, even if it was just for two days they did everything they normally did in Florida.
She had missed the Alex and Fab banter, Varney and Alex PDA and bickering.
Her friends also enjoyed their stay in London. It wasn't difficult fitting in with Golden's family because despite their wealth, they were really simple people.
The celebration dinner was everything the girls thought it would be. It was sophisticated, was attended by some very important dignitaries and a few celebrities.
Kayla finally got to introduce her brother to Golden. He was surprised to see her at his company's event. And more surprised to see her in the company of his boss.
Kyle had always idolized Varney, but had never had the opportunity to speak to him one on one but he got to do it at the party.
Varney was kind enough to listen to him and answer his questions. He was a junior staff developer and had started working at the company about two years ago.
Kyle's colleagues were shocked when they saw Kyle chatting with their boss and wondered what sort of connections he had.
On Sunday, they hung out at the Manor and played the new video games that Varney's company just released.
Golden told Alex and Fab about Linda's call and how shocked she was to have received a call from Linda of all people.
They laughed about it and commented on how much she had grown as a person. She had transformed from being very mean and nasty to somewhat caring.
Alex talked about the triplets and how they were driving Rosa crazy. And Golden felt sad that she was missing out on a lot.
The triplets were turning one soon and Golden realized that their birthday coincides with Octavia and Rema's birthday.
On Monday morning, Golden accompanied Fab and Alex to the airport to see them off. Varney still had other businesses to attend to in London so he stayed back.
It was emotional seeing her friends off and Golden couldn't stop her tears from flowing. Alex who initially was trying to be strong couldn't help but shed tears herself by the time their flight was called.
“I'll see you soon.” Golden said as she hugged Alex one last time.
Varney drove the girls back to Northbridge by noon. He stayed a while with Golden but had to return to London because he had a meeting to attend.
That power-break was what Golden didn't realize she needed to be able to go through the week that followed.
If there was something she had come to realize about Northbridge, it was the fact that they had really demanding schedules.
As medical students, their training was very intense. They learned at a very fast pace and they worked like real doctors.
The semester exams were fast approaching and every student was doubling their efforts.
Golden had come out 6th after her first year. Although it wasn't a bad position seeing that she was new in school and she was competing with the brightest minds, she however made up her mind to do her best and come out with a better grade.
Golden thought of how to improve her grades and decided to seek external help.
It was a Thursday evening and she had just got back from the hospital from her afternoon shift.
It was 8 pm in England and about 3 pm in Florida. Golden sent a text to Xander and he called back almost immediately.
“Hey Gigi what's up? I got your text.”
“Sorry to disturb you Xander. How's work?” Golden asked.
“It's been hectic, but what can I say? The kids need me. I'm free today anyways. I have worked for one week straight so I have the next two days off.
So what can I do for you Dr. Nixon?” Xander asked.
“Well here's the thing. You were once a student here right? I need some pointers on how to pass exams. I think there are some things I'm getting wrong.
Last year, I came 6th. I'm not saying that's a bad position, but I just feel like I'm missing something.
I tend to do better in my clinical cals than my actual exams. The semester exams start in a week and I'm a bit worried. Any advice on what to do?” Golden asked.
“First of all Gigi, I need to tell you how amazing you are for coming 6th your first year in Northbridge.
That's a really big deal you know. Northbridge has the best of the best and you ranking 6th is commendable considering that you didn't start out there.
I am not surprised that you are doing well in your clinical. You are super intelligent, very observant, and you think fast on your feet.” Xander couldn't help but praise Golden.
“Thanks Xander, but how do I pass my written exams then, because clinicals alone can't get me to the top.” Golden said still concerned.
“How about this. Why don't you make a list of all your lecturers and professors and then if they are still the same as the ones that taught me, I would tell you how to pass their exams.
Golden went on to make a list of all her professors and Xander gave her pointers on how to deal with each one of them.
There were about three lecturers he didn't know and couldn't help Golden with.
Golden decided to use the opportunity to revise some of her notes with him. The call ended up becoming an online tutorial class.
“Well thanks a lot for all the help Xander. You've been very helpful. I think I am more confident going into these exams.” Golden said with relief.
“I'm so glad you called me and I'm glad I was of help. I wish you the best of luck in your exams. Please feel free to call me anytime.” Xander said and ended the call.
