Chapter 136 A surprise visit
Chapter 136: A Surprise Visit
In the weeks that followed, Golden's routine was mostly triangular, from her dorm–class–hospital–back to her dorm.
She had received an unexpected call from the last person she expected. Linda had called her.
Linda congratulated her on Northbridge and asked how she was coping. They talked for quite a while and shared their new experiences as medical students and also compared experiences with their hospital rotations.
It was nice to know that when they weren't at loggerheads, they could actually have a friendly conversation.
Although Linda didn't outrightly say it, Golden knew she low-key missed her. Her presence had kept Linda on her toes and she always wanted to outdo her.
But with Golden out of the way, there really wasn't anyone to push her. Golden however encouraged her not to lose her drive and told her she finally had the opportunity to be the top of the class.
She warned Linda about relaxing and being complacent. Someone else might appear and steal her thunder.
Linda didn't tell Golden about Allan and Lindsay. She wanted to, but she couldn't bring herself to tell Golden.
Alex had warned her not to hurt Golden. And although she wasn't the one hurting her, she figured releasing the information in her hands might still end up doing some damage.
So she chose to protect her by remaining silent and oblivious. She asked Golden to try to visit every now and then.
That was as far as she could go with her warning and whether or not Golden heed the advice, was totally up to her.
It was a very warm and cozy Saturday. Golden was hanging out with her girls in the living room.
It was a rare Saturday. Rare because it was the first Saturday that they were all indoors with no classes or rotations.
They had made a conscious effort to decorate their living room and make it homely.
Most of the apartments' living room in the residence were bare. The focus was placed on the individual rooms.
Most of the living rooms just had one long couch and a small dining table with four chairs.
Golden and her flatmates after getting to know each other and building a relationship decided to redecorate.
The girls had redecorated the once-bare living room. They replaced the long couch with a full set of chairs, added beanbags, a carved center table, and soft rugs that covered the floor.
The walls were painted warm pink and butter white, giving the space a cozy girly vibe. A flat-screen TV hung on the wall for the rare nights they had time to relax.
The redo of the apartment made it feel like home. It was a nice and comfortable place to come back to after a very stressful day.
The girls decided to play a game of Monopoly. They were sitting on the rug and snacking as they played their game.
The doorbell to their apartment rang and Elsa decided to get the door.
“Hey pause the game. No peeking and no cheating. Let me see who's at the door.” Elsa said. “Is anyone expecting someone?” She asked randomly.
“Nah!” The rest chorused.
She went to the door and opened it. She saw a very beautiful lady and a handsome guy standing outside.
“Hi, good morning. May I know who you guys are looking for?” Elsa asked.
She was trying to remember where she had seen these faces, but she couldn't place it.
“Hello, my name is Alex, and this is Varney. We are here to see Golden.” Alex said with a warm smile.
“Wait a minute. Now I remember. I know you two. You are Alex the best friend and Varney the brother right?” Elsa said, finally remembering where she knew them from.
Golden had talked about them a whole lot and she had shown them their pictures.
“What are you guys doing here? Does Gigi know you guys are coming?” Elsa asked with a smile.
“No actually she doesn't. We decided to come surprise her.” Alex said.
“Elsa! Who's at the door?” Kayla shouted. “You need to come back quickly, Grace is about to cheat.”
“Don't you dare!” Elsa shouted back. “I'll be there in a second.” Turning back to the people at the door she said, “sorry, we are playing a game of Monopoly. Forgive my manners, please come in.” She immediately ushered them in.
“Girl what took you so lo.... Ahhhhhh!” Golden screamed as she saw Alex and Varney behind Elsa.
Elsa expected it and closed her ears. Kayla and Grace were shocked by the scream and covered their ears immediately.
“Girl I know you've got powerful lungs, but a heads-up next time you want to scream will be nice.” Kayla said in her very polished English accent.
Golden didn't mind what Kayla was saying. She ran towards Alex and almost crushed her in a hug.
“How?” was all she asked.
Alex staggered because of the hug but was stabilized by Varney who was behind her.
“Hey baby, surprise! But can you let go a little? I love you but, you are crushing the life out of me.”
“Sorry.” Golden released Alex and immediately threw herself into Varney's arms. She couldn't help it anymore, she began to cry.
“Hey, we are not here to make you cry pumpkin. Shhhh!” Varney tried to soothe Golden.
Golden finally put herself together and led them to sit and began the introduction.
“Guys, this is my best friend Alex, and my brother Varney.” she said to her friends.
“Alex, Varney, these are my friends and flatmates; Grace, Kayla, and Elsa whom I presume you already met at the door.
Everyone said their hellos and Elsa went to the kitchen to get some snacks for their guests.
“What are you guys doing here? Alex you didn't mention that you were coming even though we were chatting just barely five minutes ago.” Golden asked still surprised that they were actually in Northbridge.
“Yeah, we wanted to surprise you and it wouldn't be a surprise if I had told you I was in your school.” Alex replied with a smirk.
“We came into London last night. Varney's company is having a founders day celebration dinner tonight.
I took a leave from school for Monday, hopped on the last flight with him yesterday and decided to come surprise you.”
