Chapter 117: Are You Ready To Mingle?
Dinner continued and soon some of the lightweights at the table started getting a little tipsy.
Fab had brought over both alcoholic and non-alcoholic wine. And when they finished the non-alcoholic wines, they went on to the alcohol wines.
Rosa's grandma and sister had to leave early because they had an early morning flight to catch the next day.
Xander decided to see them off on Rosa's behalf because he was the only other person at the table that was familiar with them.
Just as Xander stepped back into the dining room, Baqin, Uncle Luo's wife looked up at him and said:
“Hey handsome. Do you by chance have a girlfriend?”
Fab and Alex looked at Xander interestingly. They had thought that Nana Chen would be the one to play matchmaker, they didn't expect that Aunt Baqin would beat her to it.
Golden raised an eyebrow and smiled. She had warned Xander about this earlier and she too was interested in seeing how this would play out.
“Chen Baqin?” Uncle Luo tried to caution his wife. He knew that whenever his wife got tipsy, she had the tendency to say the wrong things.
“Let her be Chen Luo. I have also been wondering the same thing. Baqin just beat me to it.” Nana said to her son before putting her attention on Xander.
“Young man, you are quite an eye candy. I hear that you are Rosa's childhood friend.
Tell me a little about yourself. Like your full name, what you do for a living, your age and birth month, what you like to do for fun, your position in the family, your relationship status.
You know, just the basics.” Nana Chen said casually.
“Nana, that's basically everything about the dude. Those sound like questions they ask at the matchmaking hall back in Bejing.” Alex said to her Nana.
“And what exactly is wrong with the questions I asked Xinyi? Varney, keep your woman in check or she will kneel on the washboard to her ancestors.”
“Yes ma'am. I apologize on her behalf. I seem to be spoiling her too much these days.” Varney apologized on Alex's behalf and stuffed a turkey in her mouth before she could say something else.
Nana nodded in approval and turned her attention back to Xander. In fact everyone turned to face him, waiting for him to respond.
“Sorry dude, you've got to answer. Welcome to my family.” Rosa said smiling at Xander.
With everyone looking at him, Xander felt like a baby panda in the zoo. Although he had been given heads-up, still nothing prepared him for this mini interrogation.
“Well my name is Alexander Mendez. I am a pediatrician and I work at St. Theresa's Teaching Hospital.
I am 33 years old and my birth month is December. Actually I was born on the 25th of December so technically I am a Christmas baby.” Xander answered seriously.
Fab and Alex looked at Golden, giving her a sly smile which caused her to roll her eyes at them.
I'm the first of two children, I have a younger sister who's in her final year in OCU.
Well, because of the nature of my job, I like traveling and going sight seeing whenever I can.”
“That's really interesting. You know when I was still working, at some point in my career I had to switch to pediatrics because of my children.
I retired as a professor in pediatrics medicine.” Nana Chen said with a smile.
“Wow ma'am I didn't know you are a doctor.” Xander said with admiration.
“I was a doctor. I'm not practicing anymore. In fact I stopped practicing when my children became grown-ups. I switched to lecturing and retired as a professor.”
“You didn't answer the last and most important question. What's your relationship status?
I have a granddaughter who's single and would be a perfect match for you.
She just turned 28, and she's the only one that took after me. She's a pediatrician just like you and coincidentally she loves traveling and sight seeing.”
“Hell-oo mum. Chloe isn't the only doctor in the family. In fact we have about 7 doctors in the family. Add Alex and that makes 8.” Chen said.
“What I meant by saying she's the only one that took after me is pointing to the fact that she's in pediatrics, not that she's a doctor.
Of course of my 21 children and uncountable grandchildren, there's bound to be a few doctors. We are a family of medicine after all.
Now would you stop interrupting, I'm trying to get your niece a nice match. If you mess this up, Alex wouldn't be the only one kneeling on the washboard.”
Nana turned her attention back to Xander.
“Actually Nana, I am not in any relationship right now. I just came out of a three year relationship.
It ended at the beginning of last year so I am in fact single.” Xander said.
“Sorry about the relationship. So my question is, are you ready to mingle?
Chloe is a pretty girl, I can show you her picture and even give you her number.” Nana said with seriousness.
“The thing is I am not ready to mingle just yet. I'm still giving myself time to heal and I'm not ready to get into another relationship.
Although there's someone I think I like, but like I said, I'm not ready to get into another relationship.” Xander said looking at Golden from the corner of his eyes as he sipped his wine.
“What a shame. Chloe would have been perfect for you. You are hot, she's hot, together you guys would have given birth to a couple of cute babies,
You know the ones they refer to as a sight of sore eyes. Oh well, take your time and I hope whenever you are ready to get back in the game, the one you like will like you back.” Baqin said.
“Thanks. I hope so too.” Xander said.
Dinner continued and Nana Chen went on to tell everyone about how Chen was too slow and Rosa had to take the lead in their relationship.
She did this to warn Xander not to be slow when he decides to start dating again.
Rosa confirmed Nana's story and told everyone about their meeting and how they started dating.
The dinner soon ended and as was the tradition in the Chen household, the women cooked, and the men cleaned up.
