Chapter 114: Intellectual Chemistry
It was still very dark outside. Golden felt her phone vibrate, she was a light sleeper and woke up at the slightest sound.
She looked at her small cuckoo clock and realized it was 5 am. Who on earth was texting this early?
Not wanting to wake Alex up, she stood up and left the room. She went to use the restroom and sleepily looked at her phone.
It was a message from Xander. The sleep immediately varnished. She remembered she had dropped him off because of an emergency and he was supposed to tell her all about it.
She went into her closet and sat on the plush cushion and opened the message.
“Hey, are you awake?” the message read.
Golden: “I am now. What's up?”
Xander: “Sorry to text you this early. Just got out of surgery. You said to tell you all about the emergency once it's taken care of.”
Golden instead of texting decided to call. She was tired of typing and felt it would be easier to talk about it instead.
“Hey doc. Did you say you just got out of surgery?” Golden asked as soon as Xander picked the call.
“Yes I did. Right now I'm in the call room trying to rest a little. I have another shift that starts by 10 am.” Xander said sounding a bit tired.
“If you don't mind me asking, what was the emergency about?” Golden never passed up any opportunity to learn something new.
She was very versatile and well read. And since Xander was a doctor in a field she was interested in, she saw it as an opportunity to learn from him.
She saw in Xander someone thriving in a field she hoped to dominate one day.
Xander looked pretty young too. If she was to guess, he would probably be the same age as Varney her brother and her he had achieved a feet in his career.
He was not only a consultant, he was also a surgeon.
After that day at the outreach, she had looked him up and was impressed by his career resume.
Her father had once told her that the only way to be the best at something was to read wide and align herself with people who were doing well in the area she was interested in.
“Well a patient presented a case of Acute Intussusception With Bowel Compromise.” Xander said.
“How old is the child?” Golden asked, her curiosity already picked.
“He is three years old. His parents brought him in panicking and the child was crying in severe pain.”
“Let me guess, they thought is was a normal stomach pain brought about by a flu and they were giving him stomach medicine until it became severe.” Golden asked already giving a primary diagnosis.
“Okay Dr. Nixon. You are very close”, Xander said impressed with Golden's analysis.
“Well the boy came in screaming in pain. He had been vomiting and had become lethargic.
Parents were panicking and the mother was crying seeing her son in so much pain.”
“The next step would have been imaging to confirm intussusception. Gosh I can feel the pain of the child just thinking about it.” Golden said.
“You are right again Dr. Nixon. Air enema reduction failed because the bowel was already ischemic.
So we had to prep for an emergency surgery to remove the dead segment. And because it's a little kid, the surgery ran for hours.”
“Wow, that must have been a lot. How's the kid now?” Golden asked concerned.
“He's doing okay. The surgery was successful but he would have to stay in the hospital for a couple of weeks to recover properly.”
“Tell me something Golden, how is it that you know so much. That's premium clinical stuff you know.
I doubt even med students in their second year know this stuff and you not only gave an accurate diagnosis, you even gave the correct prognosis.” Xander asked very impressed.
“Well let's just say I love to read and I have come across something similar. I got interested in the case, the difference was the case was presented in a 12 year old.
And now hearing that a three year old presented the same case, it makes my heart bleed for the child.
That's a toddler we are talking about who probably doesn't know how to express himself properly.
For it to have gotten to the stage of surgery, he must have been in severe pain.” Golden said a bit emotional.
“Wow Golden, you just keep blowing my mind. I feel like handing over my lab coat and license to you to start practicing already.
You will make an amazing doctor. Now I see why the kids were attracted to you during the outreach.
There's something about you that connects with the kids and that's a plus in pediatrics.
I really can't wait for you to join us at the hospital. I'm pretty sure that the professors and consultants would be blown away by you.” Xander couldn't help but praise Golden.
“Anyways, I have to go now. I need to get some rest before my next shift begins.
What time is dinner tonight and is there anything I need to know?” Xander asked.
“Don't worry Xander you will be fine. Dinner is by 8 pm and the only thing you should worry about is being matchmade by Nana Chen if you don't have a girlfriend.
Other than that, dinner at the Chens is always delightful and something to look forward to.
I'll have the driver bring the car over to the hospital later.”
“Thanks. See you later.”
The call ended and Golden went back into the room to see Alex sitting in bed and smiling.
“Who were you on the phone with for that long?” Alex asked.
“Oh I was on the phone with Xander. We were together last night when he got an emergency call.”
“Ohhh! You were with Xander? The cute and hot doctor Xander? My namesake Xander?” Alex said with a cryptic smile.
“Oh please don't give me that look. We just went for coffee. I know what you are thinking Alex without you saying it.
I have a boyfriend Alex, and I love him. Xander, I just met. At best he's just an acquaintance.” Golden said seriously.
“Well he's an acquaintance now, can become more...”
“Alex? Drop it please.” Golden said cutting her off before she could finish her statement.
