Chapter 44 Waltz and horror
Chapter 44 Waltz and horror
KAITLYN
Fck!!
A gasp fills the room as Estella stares at us with eyes wide and full of horror.
“What the hell!" She blurts out, gasping again.
I curse silently and lower my head, my face flushed in embarrassment.
“We are married, right?” Nikolai snaps, and my head shoots up.
My eyes catch her fist clenching, and the embarrassment bubbling inside of me disappears.
“Of course, you're married now. But doing this shitty thing has made me understand that you still can't get over me,” she snaps.
My eyes dim, and I swerve my head in Nikolai's direction, anger setting in.
The smile on Nikolai's face widens, and he steps closer to her.
“No, Estella, I'm just making out with my wife. Don't get your hopes high, I'm never coming back to your chopped ass,” Nikolai replies.
Pain darts across her eyes as her jaw drops.
“Chopped ass?" She huffs loudly, then tilts her neck to look at me.
I should be angry now, but why do I feel so happy that he puts her in her place? Hearing him call her proud ass chopped makes me happier.
“You heard that right, Estella, now get the fuck out, I need to get back to my woman!"
Estella's jaw drops, and she scoffs, her eyes darting from Nikolai's face to mine.
She steps on her toes and looks straight into his eyes.
“You will come running back to me. I am very sure of it, Nikolai,” she whispers, and with that, she spins around and marches out of the washroom.
I sigh and throw my head back, amusement filling my heart.
Nikolai turns around, a satisfied smile on his face.
“Dress up quickly, I'll be waiting outside,” he says and turns, pushing the door open.
“You did that to get her upset, didn't you? You still haven't gotten over her, then!” I spit out in anger.
He pauses and throws his head back, his lips twitching.
“Even if that is the reason, why are you so pissed about it?” He turns around and begins to walk closer.
“Isn't this just a game? Relax,” he mutters, and I huff.
"I never agreed to play any game with you, Nikolai Rider!” I spit out in anger.
He chuckles and brushes my hair back.
“It's not like you had a choice. Besides, your stepmother made that decision for you a long time ago,” he says, and I curl my fist in anger, glaring at him.
“Dress up quickly, the dance is about to begin. I don't want you to miss it,” he says, spinning around and charging out of the room.
I scoff loudly and grab the dress draped across the towel rack, then quickly change.
I apply some lip gloss on my lips, then head out of the room.
“Shit!" I jump and sigh out, clenching my chest in fear while glaring at him.
His lips stretch into a smirk as he stares blankly at me, his back leaning on the wall next to the door.
“Why are you scared, mi amor? I told you I would be waiting for you outside, didn't I?" He mutters.
I narrow my eyes and flip my hair to the side, trying to restore my confidence.
“Let's go,” he says, stretching out his hand.
I narrow my eyes and wrap my arms around him, then begin to walk into the hall.
A slow waltz drifts across the hall, and some couples begin to glide across the dancefloor.
“Come on,” Nikolai says as he leads me to the center of the dancefloor, where Elios is dancing with his wife.
Nikolai wraps his hand around my waist, grips my other hand, and we begin to move on the dance floor.
His grip around my waist tightens as he stares into my eyes while guiding my steps to follow his.
My hand drops on his broad shoulders, and I stare right into his eyes as well, not daring to break the contact.
He seems to be saying things to me, things I can neither hear nor understand.
I can barely hear the Victorian-era music playing in the background. All I can hear is the wild beating of my heart and the sound of his breath against my face.
“You dance so gracefully, Kaitlyn,” Elios says as we dance next to each other. I finally break my gaze away from Nikolai and smile at him.
He grins warmly at me, then turns his head towards Nikolai.
“You are the last person we thought to ever get married, and that to an innocent damsel,” he says, and looks at me with admiration in his eyes.
“Well, assumptions never work out,” Nikolai responds coldly.
The man hums and nods his head, chuckling loudly. I wonder if he knows how evil his daughter is and how obsessed she seems to be with Nikolai.
I swerve my head to the side and smirk when my eyes fall on Estella, who is standing at a corner, glaring at us.
I drop my head on Nikolai's chest and pull closer, rubbing his shoulder while swaying in circles.
She is boiling in anger, and I am loving it.
The music finally stops, and I pull away from him, then move towards Estella with a big smile on my face.
She glares at me and turns away, trembling in anger. I tilt my head to the side, chuckling loudly in satisfaction.
“Did you hear the news about the man who was found dead?” A voice speaks up from a group, and my feet freeze.
I spin around and stare at the group of people conversing.
“Yes…” another replies and leans closer after darting his eyes towards Nikolai.
"I heard he is from his father's company. My secretary said it could be his stepbrother, “ the man adds.
My heart stops for a moment as horror creeps in.
I sway my head in Nikolai's direction and watch his lips twitch into a smile as he raises a glass of wine at me.
“Jesse!" I gasp loudly, almost breaking into tears.
I feel my heart shrink as the words echo in my head over and over again.
I gasp again, and without a second thought, I rush towards the entrance of the hall blindly. As I race for the door, I accidentally crash into the champagne tower in the middle of the hall, summoning all attention towards me.
Tears blind my eyes as I run, not bothering to stop and adhere to the calls from the guests or take a glance at my stained dress. My breath is slowly fading, and I can barely think properly. Fuck marriage, fuck the Mafia, fuck his rules!
As I reach the door, I turn around and stare at his smirking face one last time before slipping into the cold night.
