Chapter 25 Twenty Five
Chapter 25 Twenty Five
I sat up slowly and pressed my hand to my heart. The bond warmed under my palm, steady and gentle, as if it were waiting for me to speak first.
Kael had burned the contract.
The reality hit me all over again, heavy and disorienting. My entire reason for being here had vanished in flames because he wanted me to be free. Because he wanted my choice, not my obligation.
I pulled my knees to my chest, trying to breathe through the wave of emotion that rose without warning.
Freedom.
The thing I had always begged the world for.
And now that I had it, I felt more lost than ever.
I was free to walk away.
I was free to stay.
And both possibilities terrified me for different reasons.
The door opened quietly. Kael entered with a cup of tea in his hand. He paused when he saw me sitting alone on the bed, wrapped in thought. His posture changed instantly. He set the cup down and crossed the room, worry clear in his eyes even before the bond carried it to me.
“Are you alright,” he asked.
I swallowed. “I do not know.”
He sat beside me with careful distance, as if afraid to push me toward a decision I was not ready to make.
“We can talk,” he said softly. “Or we can sit in silence. Whatever you need.”
“I need to understand what I am now,” I said.
“You are yourself.”
“That is not enough,” I said. “Not for the pack. Not for the council. Not for the position I was in.”
“You are not a position,” Kael said. “You are a person.”
“That is exactly what scares me.” My voice shook. “Before the contract, you and I had nothing binding us. Now the contract is gone, and we still have nothing binding us.”
“That is not true.”
“Then what is there,” I asked.
He looked at me with a gentleness that almost broke me. “There is what you feel. And what I feel. And a bond that is stronger than anything I have ever known.”
“But that bond is not a marriage,” I said quietly. “It is not a role. It is not even a commitment. It is just… emotion.”
“Emotion is enough.”
“Not for me,” I whispered. “Not yet.”
He hesitated. “Tell me what you need.”
I leaned forward, elbows on my knees. “I need to know I am not simply choosing you because you saved me. Or because the Balance tested us. Or because you are the first person who has made me feel safe in years.” My voice cracked. “I need to know I am choosing you because I want you. Not because I am afraid to lose the only place I found a home.”
Kael stayed silent for a long moment. Not tense. Not offended. Just thoughtful.
Finally he said, “Then you will stay here as long as you need to understand what you want. No pressure. No time limit. I will not ask you for an answer.”
“I do not want to stay in your room while I figure it out,” I said quietly.
He nodded. “Then choose another room. I will have it prepared.”
The bond contracted painfully, like it did not want to stretch that far apart.
“You do not like that,” I said.
“I do not,” he admitted. “But this is your choice. I will not hold you too close before you are ready.”
The honesty in his voice made something inside me tremble. I had never met someone who wanted me without trying to control me.
“Kael,” I whispered, “last night… when you said you loved me… did you mean it.”
“Yes,” he said without hesitation.
“And you are not taking it back.”
“Not in this lifetime.”
The bond warmed slowly, almost shyly, like it was learning how to breathe without pressure.
I swallowed again. “I am afraid.”
“I know.”
“I want you,” I said softly. “I want you in ways I do not know how to explain. But I also want to know who I am when I am not tied to something. I want to know what it feels like to belong to myself first.”
His voice dropped. “You can do that here.”
“Can I,” I asked.
“Yes,” he said. “I will not push. I will not rush. I will not ask you for anything you are not ready to give. You can take your time, Aria. However long you need. I will be here.”
The bond warmed again, slow and steady. Safe.
I wiped a hand across my face. “Then I need space.”
“Take it,” he said.
“But I also need you close,” I added, voice unsteady.
He exhaled softly. “Then I will be close. But not too close.”
I closed my eyes, breathing through the confusing ache in my chest.
“Kael.”
“Yes.”
“You burned the contract. But I want something else written.”
His eyes lifted. “What do you want.”
“A new agreement. One that says I am here because I choose to be. Not as your Luna. Not as your mate. Not as anything defined. Just as Aria. A woman trying to understand herself.”
His gaze softened. “And what do you want from me.”
“Patience,” I said. “And honesty. And no more hiding your past from me.”
“Done,” he said quietly.
“And no more protecting me from your emotions.”
He nodded. “Done.”
“And no chasing me if I need space.”
“That one will hurt,” he said. “But I will try.”
I felt a small smile pull at my lips. “Try hard.”
He let out a breath that felt like relief. “Then we have a new agreement.”
“Yes,” I said. “We do.”
We sat there in silence, the bond warm and patient between us. Slow burn. No pressure. No demands. Just two people choosing to stay close while giving each other space to grow.
Kael reached for my hand, slow enough that I could pull away.
I let him take it.
He kissed my knuckles lightly. “Stay with me while you learn who you are.”
I leaned into him, resting my forehead against his chest. “I think I already know who I am when I am with you.”
The bond pulsed, warm and sure.
I was free.
And for the first time, freedom felt like something I could share.
