Chapter Twenty Four
Kael’s POV
Aria fell asleep against my shoulder, but the weight of her words stayed alive in my chest long after her breathing steadied.
I am falling for you.
She had said it quietly, as if she feared the world would punish her for admitting it.
I held her as carefully as a man holds hope. Slow burn. No pressure. No demand. I meant it when I told her that. But the truth I had not said out loud pressed hard against the back of my ribs.
I did not want her here because of a contract.
I did not want her next to me because she signed a paper.
I wanted her because she chose me.
And now that she had admitted what she felt, even in the smallest way, the contract felt wrong. It felt like a chain around both of us, reminding her that our beginning had never been romantic. She deserved more than a technical bond. She deserved freedom to stay because she wanted to.
She deserved to know she could walk away at any moment and still be wanted.
I pressed a kiss against her forehead and gently moved her to the pillow. She murmured my name. My chest tightened instantly.
“I will not go far,” I whispered.
When she settled again, I stood and stepped toward the small drawer by my desk. The contract was inside, untouched since the day she signed it. I pulled it out. The parchment felt colder than I remembered, like something that belonged to a version of us that no longer existed.
The writing looked harsh now.
It listed obligations.
Guidelines.
Expectations that had nothing to do with the way I held her during nightmares or the way she looked at me when she tried not to care.
This paper was not who we were becoming.
I sat on the edge of the desk, staring at it. Every rational part of me said to leave it alone. We still needed it for the pack. The council. The structure that kept us safe. But rationality had not saved her life during the Balance’s test. Rationality had not held her hand while she admitted she was falling for me.
Love was not rational.
But it was real.
And she deserved a real choice.
My hand tightened around the contract.
I could feel the bond shifting as if responding to my thoughts. Aria stirred again in her sleep, sensing the unrest inside me.
“Do not worry,” I whispered, though she could not hear me. “I am fixing what never should have controlled us.”
I carried the contract to the fireplace. I stood there for a long moment, letting the heat touch my skin. Then I tore the parchment in half. The sound cracked through the room. I tore it again and again until the pieces were small and final. Then I threw them into the fire.
The flame swallowed the pieces immediately.
The bond pulsed once, almost in relief.
Aria was free.
She might not know it yet, but she was no longer tied to me by duty or obligation. She could walk away at any time. My heart stung at the possibility, but I knew this was the only way to let her love me for who I was and not for what she had agreed to.
When I turned around, she was awake.
She stood barefoot near the bed, her hair messy, her eyes wide with confusion. The bond carried her shock to me, sharp and cold.
“What did you do,” she asked.
I stepped toward her slowly. “I ended the contract.”
The words hit her harder than I expected. She blinked several times, as if trying to piece the moment together. “You burned it.”
“Yes.”
“Why.”
“Because I do not want you here because of an agreement,” I said. “You told me today that you were falling for me. I cannot hold you to a contract while expecting you to trust your own feelings.”
Her breath left her in a shaky exhale. “Kael, I needed that contract. It gave me a place. A purpose. Safety.”
“You do not owe me anything in return for safety,” I said. “Not anymore. Not ever.”
Aria pressed her hand to her forehead. “This is too much. You cannot just decide this alone.”
“I can,” I said. “And I did. Because if you stay now, you will stay freely.”
She looked at me sharply. “And if I leave.”
The words speared through my chest, but I forced myself to answer honestly. “I will let you go. I will not fight you.”
She stared at me in silence. Her emotions shifted too quickly for the bond to keep up. Shock. Hurt. Relief. Fear. Something else I could not name.
“Why would you do this now,” she whispered.
“Because I love you,” I said.
Her breath stopped. The bond froze between us as if the entire world held still.
I stepped closer. “I love you, Aria. Not because the bond demands it. Not because the Balance forced it. Not because the contract placed us in the same room. I love you because of who you are when you stand in front of me. I love your strength, your fear, your stubbornness, your honesty.”
Her eyes filled, not with tears, but with pressure she was holding back. “You are not supposed to say that. We were supposed to take this slowly.”
“We still can,” I said. “My feelings are mine, not a demand.”
She shook her head. “You think this makes it easier. It does not. I do not know how to love someone without losing myself.”
“Then learn,” I said. “With me. At your pace. On your terms.”
She looked like she wanted to run and stay at the same time. Her hands trembled at her sides. “What if I cannot do this.”
“Then I will still be here,” I said.
Aria stepped closer, her voice small. “I have nothing binding me to you anymore.”
“That is the point.”
“And if I leave,” she whispered again, softer this time, “will it break you.”
“Yes,” I answered honestly. “But I will not trap you to keep you close.”
She stared at me as if no one had ever given her that kind of freedom before. The bond warmed suddenly, slow and soft, like it understood the shift even before she did.
Aria took one more step until she stood in front of me, close enough to feel the heat from my chest. She placed her hand over my heart.
“You really love me,” she said.
“I do.”
She closed her eyes. “And you want me to choose you.”
“I want you to want me,” I said. “Not because you are bound. Because you want this.”
She breathed in slowly, the kind of breath a person takes when stepping into something new and terrifying. “I am trying.”
“I know.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper. “Do not give up on me while I learn.”
“I never will.”
Aria lifted her head and pressed her forehead against my chest. Not a kiss. Not surrender. Something deeper. A choice still forming.
I wrapped my arms around her slowly. Carefully. With patience.
Her whisper sank into my skin. “I think I am choosing you already.”
My heart answered before I could.
The bond warmed, steady and sure.
And for the first time, she leaned into me without fear.
