Chapter 243 Crossing Boundaries

Chapter 243 Crossing Boundaries
The evening sky was fading into twilight as I met Kane and Ryan at the front entrance of Silver Moon Estate. Ryan looked uncharacteristically nervous, constantly adjusting his collar and checking his pocket.

"Ready?" Kane asked, his voice steady as always.

I nodded, following them to the waiting black SUV. The driver, a stoic-faced man in the Sterling family's service, already had the engine running.

"Are you sure this is going to work?" I whispered to Kane as we settled into the leather seats.

"Let me worry about that part," he replied, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.

The drive took us away from the sprawling luxury of Silver Moon territory and into more modest neighborhoods. When we finally pulled up to our destination, I was genuinely surprised.

"This is Clara's family home?" I asked, staring at the well-maintained but ordinary two-story house with neatly trimmed hedges and a small garden.

The property was nothing like the ostentatious mansions of established wolf families. It was a typical middle-class home – comfortable, but worlds away from Silver Moon Estate.

We stepped out of the SUV, automatically falling into traditional wolf hierarchy positioning. Kane stood in front, Ryan to his left and slightly behind, and I took my place to his right rear. It was an ancient formation that communicated respect for pack structure, something I'd learned was critical when making formal visits.

Kane rang the doorbell, and after a moment, a middle-aged man with thinning hair and anxious eyes opened the door. The moment he saw Kane, his face paled.

"M-Mr. Sterling!" he stammered, immediately lowering his gaze in deference. "Please forgive my surprise. How may we be of service?"

Kane's voice took on the formal tone he used for official pack business. "I need to speak with the head of the Bennett family."

"Of course, of course! Please, come in." The man stepped aside, practically tripping over himself to usher us into the house.

We were led into a cozy living room filled with family photographs and modest furnishings. I immediately noticed the difference between this space and the cold elegance of Silver Moon Estate. This place had the lived-in quality of a real home – framed school pictures on the walls, handmade crafts displayed proudly on shelves, and comfortable, well-worn furniture.

"The family heads will join you shortly. Can I offer you refreshments?" the man asked, clearly a house steward rather than Clara's father.

"That won't be necessary," Kane replied. The steward nodded and hurried from the room.

"We've finally made it this far," I said softly once we were alone.

"This is the easy part," Kane replied, his eyes scanning the room.

I walked around, taking in the photographs of Clara through various stages of her life – birthday parties, school events, family vacations. The home was filled with evidence of a loving, normal family life.

"This place feels like an actual home," I observed. "It's full of real-life traces – family photos, children's crafts everywhere. It looks like people actually live here, not just occupy space for show."

Before Kane could respond, a couple entered the room. The woman had Clara's gentle features and blonde hair, while the man carried himself with quiet dignity. Both looked terrified.

"Mr. Sterling," the man began, "we're deeply honored by your visit, but may I request you return at a more appropriate time?"

Kane remained standing, his posture unyielding. "I'm here now, and I need to see my friend Clara."

The father's expression tightened. "I'm afraid that's not possible. Perhaps you haven't been informed? Clara has decided to withdraw from the Luna Selection. She needs to rest at home now."

"May I ask why?" Kane pressed.

"Personal health reasons," her mother offered vaguely. "We've already communicated with Alpha Alexander about the matter."

I stepped forward, feeling Ryan's desperate gaze on my back. "Please excuse our intrusion, but seeing Clara is important to us. As her friend, I'm worried about her health."

The mother's eyes widened in recognition. "You're... you're Elena, another candidate from the selection."

Something in my expression must have touched her because after a moment's hesitation, she nodded. "Perhaps... it wouldn't hurt for you to see Clara alone. She might... appreciate seeing a friendly face."

Before I could follow her, Ryan pulled me aside to a corner of the room.

"Give her this," he whispered, pressing a silver ring with an embedded moonstone into my palm. "Tell her it should have been hers long ago. If she's willing, I want to formally offer her the Moonlight Bond."

I closed my fingers around the ring. "I'll make sure she gets it."

Catching Kane's eye, I noticed his expression – he'd known about Ryan's intentions all along.

Clara's mother led me upstairs to a bedroom door. I knocked gently before entering.

Clara sat by the window, quickly wiping away tears when she saw me. "Elena?"

We embraced, and I carefully examined her. She looked tired but otherwise healthy.

"I told my parents everything," she explained. "I couldn't keep pretending to be interested in Mason when my wolf only recognizes Ryan."

I squeezed her hand. "Ryan and Kane are downstairs waiting."

Her eyes widened. "They're here? But my parents—"

"Ryan asked me to give you this," I interrupted, revealing the ring. "He says it should have been yours long ago. He wants to formally offer you the Moonlight Bond."

Clara stared at the moonstone ring, fresh tears welling in her eyes. "But my family... we're not from an established pack. My parents will never agree. Ryan would lose his standing in the wolf community."

"Kane will find a way," I assured her. "If this is what you truly want, Clara, you can't give up. You have to follow your wolf's guidance."

Clara slipped the ring onto her finger, and we returned downstairs. The moment Ryan saw the ring on her hand, his eyes flashed with wolf-gold.

"Clara..." he breathed.

Ryan turned to Clara's parents and performed the most respectful wolf greeting – a slight bow with his right palm over his heart.

"I request permission to enter into a Moonlight Bond with your daughter," he stated formally. "The pup she carries is mine. I will care for it as my own and raise it alongside Clara as my moon-mate."

Clara's parents exchanged shocked glances.

Kane stepped forward. "I vouch for his character. As my Beta and one of the most loyal members of the Silver Moon Pack, he will protect your daughter with his life."

After a tense moment, Clara's parents nodded in agreement. "If Mr. Sterling vouches for him, we believe this is the best arrangement."

Her father asked his wife to bring out a special bottle of traditional wolf celebration drink, reserved for significant family occasions.

Clara and Ryan moved toward each other, not touching – tradition forbade physical contact before the formal ceremony – but their wolves were clearly calling to each other.

Watching them, I felt genuinely happy for the first time in weeks. When I accidentally caught Kane's gaze, my heart skipped a beat. Something deep inside me seemed to stir awake, a feeling I'd thought long dead.
