Call of the Wild

"It's not safe for Joe anymore," Lucas admitted, his voice trembling slightly. "Things are changing. The werewolves... they do not follow their normal rules anymore. They came out before dark yesterday. If they can do that, they can do it again." A chill ran down Emily's spine at the words "before dark." "What are you talking about? They always follow their own rules. This doesn’t make sense."

"They don’t care anymore," he replied, his voice strained. The fear in his eyes was palpable, and for a moment, Emily’s heart raced with dread. "My dad has a sense of these things, believe me. He wouldn’t have sent Joe to research the rock if he knew it was dangerous." Just then, Gregory walked up, his heavy boots echoing against the dirt road. "Are you ready, Lucas?

"Yes," Lucas replied, his voice barely above a whisper as he turned his focus back to Emily. The distance in his gaze disheartened her, but she was not ready to let him venture into that dark abyss alone. "Wait!" Emily interjected, her determination brimming. “Where are you going?” "To get Joe. I cannot leave him out there knowing my dad sent him," Lucas stated, a resolute edge returning to his tone. "Okay, let me get my coat," she said, turning to head home.

"NO!" Lucas yelled, panic rising in his voice. "You are staying in town." Emily’s voice was firm as she responded, "I’m going where you go." "Emily, it isn’t safe!" Lucas shot back, his expression a mixture of frustration and fear. "They attacked before dark yesterday; they can do it again," she reasoned, stepping closer, trying to pierce through his resolve. "Besides, Joe won’t believe you. He’ll listen to me."

Lucas hesitated, his heart pounding. He did not know Joe well, but he couldn’t live with himself if his father's orders got someone killed, but the fear creeping into his gut churned with the knowledge that he could not protect both if the wolves struck again. The very idea of the savage creatures roaming in broad daylight made him uneasy. "Emily, think about this! If we run into a pack—if something happens—"Then we face it together," she interrupted calmly, her gaze unwavering. "We always have, Lucas. You do not get to decide for me.”

His eyes softened as he stared into hers; she was right. They had faced countless dangers side by side over the past few days, but this was different; this danger felt more real and more menacing. "Fine," he relented, his voice heavy with resignation. "But promise me you'll stay close, go get your coat."

She smiled slightly, the tension between them easing just for a moment. "Always.” Emily returned with her coat with a hesitating nod, they turned to face the direction of the woods. The sun dipped lower, and shadows sprawled eerily across the ground, the rustle of leaves sounding like whispers. Lucas led the way, heart racing not only with fear but with the uncertainty of what lay ahead. As they stepped into the trees, the sun's last rays disappeared, leaving only the hushed sounds of the forest around them. The air was thick with anxiety, every crack of a twig sending ripples of worry through Lucas's spine. Emily reached for Lucas's hand, her grip firm and reassuring. They were in this together—whether Joe would be waiting for them at the edge of the woods or whether they would confront something far darker than either anticipated.

As the shadows deepened, a low growl echoed in the distance, reminding them that the world had begun to shift in ways they had never seen before Emily, Lucas, and Gregory ventured deeper into the dense woods. Sunlight filtered through the branches, casting a dappled pattern on the forest floor. Hand in hand, Emily and Lucas moved forward, with Gregory trailing behind, occasionally glancing over his shoulder as if sensing something lurking beyond the trees.

As they walked, a low growl echoed through the stillness, reverberating off the ancient trunks. The sound seemed to wrap around them like a predator’s embrace, making Gregory halt and look around nervously. Emily pressed closer to Lucas, her heartbeat quickening. “Together we can do this,” she whispered, trying to muster strength she sometimes felt slipping away. “In faith and confidence.” “I promise to keep you safe,” Lucas replied, squeezing her hand tightly.

Emily met his gaze, her heart swelling with love. “I know you will, my love.” But there was a shadow in her mind, a nagging worry that was not just about the growls. She needed to address the path they were on. “Lucas,” she said, halting their pace. “About Joe… please, just remember he is not a monster. He is family… at least for me. Just do not hurt him, okay? No matter how he reacts.” Lucas’s brow furrowed, concern mingling with confusion. “Emily, he—” “I know!” she interrupted gently, her voice firm yet pleading. “We were not happy together, but he never hurt me. He is still a part of my life, a part… of who I am. Just remember that if we find him.”

There was a moment of silence, as the tension in the air thickened with the weight of everything unsaid. Emily looked at Lucas, and the love in his eyes softened her worries, his strength offering a light in the shadows. “I love you! And I want to be with you, but I still care about Joe we have been threw a lot and I want him safe.” Lucas nodded slowly, understanding her wish to protect Joe’s honor, something she fiercely treasured despite their tumultuous past. “I understand, Em. I will keep you safe, and if Joe is here, we will figure it out together. But we need to keep moving.”

No sooner had the words left than his lips did the growling intensify, blending into a chorus of rustles and frenzied sounds. Gregory turned, wide-eyed and panicked. “Did you hear that?” he stammered. “It’s getting closer!” With a sudden burst of bravery, Emily pushed forward, guided by the same hope that made her capable of believing in the goodness of people, even when it was uncomfortable. “We have to find him first,” she said. “That’s the only way we’ll know what’s lurking here.” As they weaved through the trees, the trio came upon a clearing bathed in vibrant green light—a contrast to the dark atmosphere thickening around them. There, at the edge of the glade, the trio spotted movement. Joe stood silhouetted against the brilliance, his back facing them, drawn in a defensive stance beside the giant rock sticking out of the ground.

“Joe!” Emily called, her voice cutting through the tension. He turned an expression of surprise mixed with caution crossing his features. The growling sound increased, taking shape as shadows crept closer around Joe. “Emily! Get back!” he yelled, shifting to protect himself, even as panic painted his expression when he recognized Lucas beside her. “Joe!” she shouted back. “We’re here to help you!” But before any explanation could be given, a massive form lunged from the underbrush. Lucas instinctively stepped in front of Emily, pushing her aside, emboldened by fierce love and resolve. She cried out, while Lucas was bracing for the impact.

But instead of a fierce confrontation, a sleek wolf broke free into the clearing, halting abruptly as it saw the humans standing there. Its growl softened to a low whine, eyes darting between them: a sentinel of the woods watching over its own. Joe runs back toward Emily and Lucas grabs Joe's arm and says, “Run, take her to town, she is pregnant.”

A wave of emotion swept over Joe, they had tried for years with no luck and now she is pregnant. Joe grabs her jacket and starts pulling her from the clearing, dragging her back to town, she tries to fight him, but she lacks the power to overpower him. Lucas looks back with a swift message to Emily, “Whatever happens protect the baby.” Joe is confused as to why Lucas cares about Emily, and what happens to his child but does not have time to worry about it as he is dragging Emily in the opposite direction.

The trees trembled as three more wolves emerged, their glowing eyes locked onto her with a singular, terrifying intent: the life of her child. “They’re coming for us,” she whispered, her heart pounding in despair. Suddenly, from the edge of the clearing, Lucas and Gregory appeared. Their bodies shifted in an instant—their shirts ripping apart as thick muscles rippled beneath their skin. A deep growl erupted from Lucas as his form transformed into a massive wolf-like beast, his fur black as night and gleaming under the sun. Gregory followed suit, his fur a pleasant shine of gold, and both animals rose to defend Emily and her baby. The pair didn’t care if they lost their lives Lucas's only concern was Emily's safety and Gregory knew the love Lucas had for her and what the baby could mean for everyone back in town. Gregory is more than ready to lay his life on the line for his family and the town's future. As the wind began to sweep through the clearing the crisp cold air lingered. The future looks grim as time passes, slowly without knowing what lies ahead.
