Chapter 35
Chapter 35
A hundred million dollars!
Hearing that number, Tate and Ewan couldn't help but gasp.
An additional investment of a hundred million dollars, no questions asked, no oversight.
On the surface, it was an investment, but where the money ended up was something the people in the room were very skilled at handling.
Hesitating even for a second would be disrespectful to such an amount of money.
"Mr. Campbell, you're being too formal. We're here to serve you."
"So, Mr. Campbell, how do you want to handle this case?" Tate asked softly, lighting a Cohiba cigar.
Hayes smirked internally but kept a straight face. "I want Henry out in five years, without leaving any trace."
Tate and Ewan exchanged glances.
No traces. This money wasn't going to be easy to earn.
"Roy and Eugene are dead. Aurora died at their hands, and it has nothing to do with Henry."
"Henry was also used by Ethan and was unaware of the whole situation."
Hayes spoke each word deliberately, looking at Tate and Ewan.
In the face of a hundred million dollars, the dynamics among the three shifted.
Hayes was no longer submissive; he was in control.
Tate looked at the ten million dollars in cash, gritted his teeth, and said, "No problem."
"If you don't have a problem, neither do I."
"Alright then, let's eat."
Hayes called the waiter to serve the meal.
The ten million dollars in cash lay openly on the floor, constantly tempting Tate and Ewan.
Juan, sitting nearby, smiled and drank with them.
Hayes glanced at Juan a few times, his face full of disdain.
Hayes wasn't a fool. After so many years in business, he had seen all kinds of people.
Without some skill, how could he have developed Campbell Corporation to its current state?
After some thought, Hayes guessed Juan's intentions.
For years, Hayes never believed in so-called loyalty; he only believed in interests.
It didn't take much to figure it out.
Tate and Ewan were government officials; they had some limits.
But Juan was different. He had no scruples and had been eyeing Campbell Corporation for a long time.
If something happened to Hayes, the biggest beneficiary would be Juan.
Hayes couldn't take that risk.
But for now, it seemed he had made the right bet.
Halfway through the meal, Hayes called his secretary from outside.
In a voice loud enough for Tate and Ewan to hear, he pointed to the ten million dollars in cash on the floor. "Send it to the leaders' cars."
Tate and Ewan's faces lit up with joy, their greed no longer hidden.
Ten million dollars.
Seeing their eager expressions, Hayes quickly ended the meal.
After everyone left, Hayes stared at the taillights of Juan's car.
He told his secretary, "I want to know Juan's every move, and if there's any connection between Roy, Eugene, and Juan."
The secretary nodded and left with the documents.
Hayes stood there, no longer looking drunk.
Meanwhile, in Juan's car.
Juan sat in the back seat, his face dark.
"Stop the car."
The car stopped steadily by the roadside.
Juan got out and quickly dialed a number, his voice low and cold. "Tell me the truth, were you discovered?"
"No, you can trust my work."
Juan's tone was doubtful. "I feel like Hayes is onto me."
"He seems to know that Roy and Eugene died by my hand."
"Are you sure there were no traces left at the scene? The police won't trace it back to me, right?"
"Just pray I don't get caught."
Before Juan could respond, the call was abruptly ended.
In anger, he threw his phone out.
A sense of unease enveloped him.
If things were exposed, he couldn't imagine what Hayes would do to him.
---
At the forensic center.
Travis returned home and brought Elaine over.
The moment she put on her lab coat and stood in front of the body, Elaine seemed like a different person.
Behind Travis was a group of the deceased's family members.
"Officer, what did my son do?"
"How did he die? He was fine when he left a few days ago."
Under their watchful eyes, Elaine gently cut open the deceased's skin with a scalpel.
Everyone except Travis couldn't bear to watch and closed their eyes.
Everything proceeded in an orderly manner.
Elaine's face was serious, every movement cautious, sweat dripping from her nose.
An hour later, the autopsy results were out.
The deceased had no signs of external force before death, and all characteristics matched drowning.
Eugene's results were the same.
Travis looked at the nearly identical autopsy reports.
The killer was very professional.
Hiring such a professional killer just to take out two street thugs? Travis couldn't understand it.
"Officer, can I take my son home now?"
Roy and Eugene's parents cried as they asked.
"Kian, take them to the morgue."
Kian put down his work and quickly approached the families.
Elaine stood obediently behind Travis, knowing it was best to stay silent.
"Where did you get that thing?"
"What... what thing?" Elaine's eyes darted.
Travis turned and glanced at Elaine.
He tossed something to her.
Catching it, Elaine froze when she saw what it was.
She looked at Travis in disbelief.
Her voice trembled, "How... how is this possible? How do you have this?"
"Nothing is impossible. No one said only one person could have it."
Elaine was about to ask more when Kelvin walked in.
"Captain Smith, someone from above is here."
Travis and Elaine exchanged a glance before he headed to the chief's office.
A man in a suit sat in front of Carter.
Joshua stood respectfully behind Carter.
Carter saw Travis and eagerly introduced him to the man. "This is Travis, the main person in charge of this case."
"I've heard of him. Very impressive."
Carter, wearing a friendly smile, introduced Travis, "This is Mr. Zane Robinson from the FBI's internal affairs."
Travis's pupils slightly contracted, sensing trouble.
Zane smiled and waved, "Hello, nice to meet you, Travis."
"I'm here with orders," Zane said softly.
Carter and Joshua immediately stood up straight.
Travis stood behind Carter.
Zane cleared his throat, "You've done well with this case, but with an important congressional session coming up, we need to wrap it up quickly."
"Arrest all involved and ensure they face severe punishment."
