Chapter 34
Chapter 34
Hayes stood in front of Travis, panting heavily, his eyes bloodshot, and he could barely walk straight.
Travis waved his hand, looking at Hayes. "Take a breath, man. Chill out."
"Chill out? How can I chill out?" Hayes's voice was raw.
"Roy and Eugene are dead. What about my son?" Hayes stood up, his bloodshot eyes locked on Travis. "Tell me! What about my son?"
Travis scratched his ear and glanced at Kelvin, who was standing nearby, giving him a slight nod.
Kelvin closed the office door and thoughtfully handed Hayes a cup of hot water.
"Mr. Campbell, ever heard the saying 'dead men tell no tales'? They're both gone now. With no witnesses or evidence, we only have your son's statement to go on."
Hayes grabbed Travis by the collar. "Travis, you're screwing with me!"
Travis spread his hands. "Mr. Campbell, what do you suggest we do in this situation?"
Seeing Travis's expression, Hayes let go, feeling defeated.
Three million dollars spent, and all he got were two dead bodies. His son's face flashed in his mind.
After all these years in the business world, this was the first time he felt such deep helplessness.
Almost resigned, he asked, "Will my son get the death penalty?"
"Drug use resulting in death, if the circumstances are severe, the death penalty isn't out of the question."
Travis looked at Hayes and said softly, "Even if it's not the death penalty, with both charges, life imprisonment is certain."
Life imprisonment? Hayes thought, 'As long as my son doesn't die, I don't care.'
In just a few minutes, Hayes walked out of the criminal investigation department, looking despondent.
Good news, his son wouldn't die.
Bad news, life imprisonment.
As soon as he got in the car, his phone rang.
Juan's worried voice came through. "Hayes, are you okay? I heard about those two..."
"It's fine, thanks."
"Don't mention it. I didn't really help much."
After a few pleasantries, they hung up.
Meanwhile, at the top floor of Bright Group.
Juan hung up the phone with a grim expression, looking at the person standing in front of him.
A slight smile played on his lips. "You did well this time. No one saw you, right?"
"Don't worry."
Juan walked to the window, looking at the Campbell Corporation sign being taken down, his eyes burning with ambition.
It wouldn't be long before it was his.
At Campbell Corporation.
Henry's imprisonment for drug use had already cost the company a fortune.
Hayes sat in his office chair.
A knock on the door, and his secretary walked in, her high heels clicking on the floor, placing a contract in front of Hayes.
In a soft voice, she said, "Mr. Campbell, this is the cooperation contract from Mr. Edwards. The legal department has reviewed it, and there are no issues."
"Ewan?"
Without a second thought, Hayes signed his name on the contract.
With Roy and Eugene dead, his son taking the fall for them, they couldn't refuse to help.
Hayes called out to the secretary who had just left.
"Prepare a dinner for four at six tonight, somewhere private."
"Yes, Mr. Campbell."
Almost simultaneously, three people received invitations from Hayes.
Tate and Ewan quickly caught on to Hayes's intentions.
Only Juan kept a slight smile on his face.
Indeed, people could never stay calm when it came to family.
That evening.
Hayes, Tate, Ewan, and Juan sat in a private room.
Hayes personally poured drinks for the three, his demeanor humble.
After all, he needed their help.
Tate and Ewan, the old foxes, quietly enjoyed Hayes's service.
No one spoke first, knowing that whoever did would lose.
They were well aware of Campbell Corporation's financial situation and Henry's predicament.
They had Hayes in a tight spot, and they knew it.
Hayes raised his glass. "We're all in the same boat now, so I'll be straightforward."
"You know my son used drugs."
"Aurora's death is also connected to my son. I've investigated, and by the time I found the other two, they were already dead."
The three men's faces changed.
Hayes's seemingly casual words were more of a test.
Tate and Ewan saw the hidden delight in each other's eyes.
Juan remained calm, as if he had known all along.
Tate patted Hayes on the shoulder. "Mr. Campbell, I'm afraid there's not much I can do."
"This incident has too much impact. Even if I wanted to suppress it, it wouldn't be easy."
"Mr. Campbell, this isn't just an internal matter. We also need to control the public opinion online."
"In just a few days, Campbell Corporation has probably lost tens of millions of dollars, right?"
Hayes looked at the two, cursing them inwardly.
Suppressing it wouldn't be difficult if the bribe was enough.
Hayes put down his glass. "I've consulted a lawyer. The best outcome for my son is life imprisonment, so I'm not going to struggle anymore."
With these words, Juan and Tate's plans were all for naught.
Juan was the most anxious.
All his previous efforts were in vain.
Hayes observed their expressions, smiling. "Thank you all for your help during this time."
"Mr. Campbell, actually, Henry's situation isn't hopeless."
Ewan didn't need to spell it out; everyone knew what he meant.
Hayes chuckled and clapped his hands lightly.
Two burly men in casual clothes walked in, carrying four safes.
When they opened them, Tate and Ewan's eyes widened.
They were filled with cash.
Hayes sat in his chair, his expression unchanged. "No need to look any further, there are ten million dollars in these four cases."
"If you're willing to help, each of you will get ten million dollars."
They were tempted, deeply tempted.
Hayes saw the greed in Tate's eyes.
He didn't believe ten million dollars couldn't sway them.
Tate and Ewan had received plenty of bribes, but seeing ten million dollars in cash was far more impactful than an anonymous check.
A slight sound of swallowing.
Juan knew this wasn't good.
Just as he was about to speak, Ewan beat him to it. "Mr. Campbell, let me think about it."
Juan clenched his fists, his face darkening.
Everyone present was a seasoned player, knowing what the other was thinking.
When Ewan said he needed to think, he was really thinking about how to spend the money.
Hayes shrugged, raising the stakes. "If my goal is achieved, I'll add a hundred million dollars in investment."
