Chapter ten

Chapter 10

(Myra's POV)

The executioner was a bald man. He looked so muscular and strong. He held his sharp blade and pointed it towards Armani.

"No!" I screamed. "You have to kill me first. I can't bear seeing Armani dead."

"Shut it!" The bald, muscular man shouted. "You don't get to decide what happens to you. I hold the sword and I decide who dies first. You are going to die seconds after her so I don't think it matters anyway."

I began to weep loudly. I wasn't courageous enough to hold it in. I could see Armani shedding tears as well. I knew I had to comfort her. However, I didn't know how to do that.

The situation was mind-blowing!

"Mummy, am I going to die?" Armani asked. She was really crying hard. I looked at her carefully. I felt pity for her. I didn't want her to die. She was too little.

"You won't die, Armani," I reassured. I went to her and held her in my arms. I patted her back carefully. That was all I could do.

It felt like a reunion!

"Very nice!" I heard the bald, muscular man say. "I love emotional people a lot. Can you believe that seeing you like this makes me feel like weeping? I would certainly weep after cutting your heads off."

The last sentence gripped me.

I felt goosebumps running through my skin. I became more afraid.

"Listen baby," he continued. He was directly facing Armani. "Your mother can't protect you. I'll promise you one thing. As long as Alpha Wilfred remains the only Alpha of this pack, both of you will die."

Armani started to shake her head in disagreement.

"No, I'm not gonna die! Mummy already promised to protect me. You won't be able to hurt me or mummy," Armani claimed. She looked so confident and less afraid.

It was for a moment but I was happy that Armani was not scared anymore. But by the next moment, the truth dawned on me. We were still going to die and Armani's confidence was still going to diminish.

"Wow! Very nice speech, kid. Your mother has done a good job in inspiring you," he told us. He paused for a while to check the effect of his words. Observing no contradictory statement or actions, he continued. "But let me tell you the one and only truth here. You are all going to die and your life lies in my hands!"

Armani shook on hearing that exclamation from him. Instantly, I shielded Armani and faced the executioner.

"Don't do that!" I screamed hysterically. "My kid is not going to die! Stop making her afraid."

I didn't know how I got the confidence to talk. I guess Armani was influencing my point of view. I knew death was inevitable but even at that, I was making myself believe that we could escape death.

Pure infatuation!

This was totally unnecessary. I didn't have to delude myself.

The bald, muscular man started to laugh loudly. He looked crazy while laughing. I wondered what he actually was.

A loyalist?

An evil person?

A man bound by circumstances?

I couldn't tell! I was officially fed up. My life was hanging by the line but all I could imagine was slapping the man's bald head. I was so focused on it. I would look at it and think about the structure of his brain. His head was probably where all his evil ideas came from.

He had a head but he wanted to cut someone else's head. That was absurd. Doesn't he possess emotions?

"This is so hilarious! I can't believe you think you will survive this ordeal. I find it so funny," he said and laughed more.

By this time, the guards who escorted us down to the execution ground were not having it. They looked impatient. It was only expected when one of the guards spoke.

"You are wasting our time here," the guard said while facing the executioner. "Carry out the Alpha's order so we can leave here. We do not intend to spend all the time in the world here, do we?"

The executioner frowned in annoyance. I could correctly guess that he hated being corrected. Truthfully speaking, the executioner had spent too much time talking.

Hearing the guard's statement got me scared once more. Death was near and I knew it. It was absolutely terrifying.

"It's okay," the executioner addressed the guards. "I understand that you love things very fast but I will have to disagree with your intent. We are dealing with people's lives here and we don't get to take it just like that. It is necessary that we allow them to say their last words and prayer before they die."

Another of the guards shook his head in disagreement.

"I think you are beginning to let emotions in here. Do the execution so we can leave. All I can see you doing right now is being a chatterbox!" The guard exclaimed. I could see that the guards were angry.

Amidst the guards' anger, I could see one of them with a different facial expression. This particular guard looked older than the rest. I needn't be told that he was the wisest of the lot. I found out his thoughtfulness after he let out his opinion.

"Calm down, brother," the older guard said coolly. "I think we are forgetting our mission here. We are here to attend to an order and not to argue or fight. I don't want this slut and her kid to bring rifts into our midst."

I didn't care about being addressed as 'slut' anymore. I was used to it and it sounded like a normal name to me now.

"He just called you a slut, mummy. Won't you reply?" Armani asked me slowly. Her voice was less audible and I was the only one who could hear it.

I couldn't talk at the moment so I simply tapped her to bring her back to her normal self. Fortunately, Armani understood my gesture and she stopped talking.

Meanwhile, the guards were still conversing.

"It's not our fault, brother!" The hot tempered guard shouted. "The executioner is the faulty one here. All we asked him to do is his job but he is making it difficult for us. Why should we force him to do what he has signed up for? Why doesn't he understand timeliness? All you have to do is call him to attention. I don't have plans to fight with him."

The eldest guard muttered some incoherent words which I couldn't hear. After that, he tapped the hot tempered guard on his back and reassured him that he would solve things.

"This is very simple…" the eldest guard disclosed. "All we have to do is to cooperate and tolerate each other. We can't teach the executioner his job and he can't teach ours too. Our job is to confirm the execution of Myra and Armani, while his own job is to execute them. We have different roles to play but we both want the same thing."

"Correct!" The hot tempered guard said. He sounded like he was enjoying himself. The speech from the eldest guard made sense. It was enough to make a hot tempered person cool down.

But the executioner had a different view ascertaining the situation.

"I don't think all these are needed," the executioner said. He was speaking pertaining to the speech of the eldest guard. "All these points made are what we are all aware of. What we need now is a conclusion and not a recap of everything we already know."

That was deep.

I could feel more tenseness. It was obvious that a fight would break out very soon. The executioner would probably have no issues with the eldest guard. However, he would probably have issues with the hot tempered guard.

But for once, it seemed I was wrong. It was the eldest guard who replied.

"That's your thought. You should try to calm down and see the sense in that statement," the eldest guard remarked.

But the executioner wasn't moved.

I heard the executioner begin to laugh. He looked into the eldest guard's eyes deeply.

This was a showdown!

Midway, the eldest guard withdrew from the confrontation. The fight that was about to ensue was suspended for later. It would have been remarkable to see two strong, hefty, and muscular men fight each other.

Even at the risk which I was yet to be saved from, I still thought about seeing a fight take place.

Was I in the right mind?

No!

My sanity had probably taken its leave.

"Coward!" The executioner commented over the eldest guard's withdrawal.

I could see the hot tempered guard coming for the executioner.

Fortunately for the executioner, the hot tempered guard was held by his fellow guards.

Now, the eldest guard took control.

"Do your job now or else you won't like what we will do to you," the eldest guard said carefully.

It hit me strangely.

I was about to die.

The executioner got his men to hold me. I tried getting free but I was overpowered.

With Armani crying, my strength failed me totally. I was still glad that I was going to be executed first. I couldn't bear the sight of seeing Armani die.

The executioner raised his sword and made to descend on me.

At that critical moment, I heard a voice shout 'stop'.

It was a familiar voice.
