Chapter 88 What Lurks Beneath Truth
Luna’s POV
The forest feels different tonight, hmph…not dangerous and not quiet, but just watching.
Every step I take crunches softly under my feet, the sound too loud in the stillness. The moon hangs low, and silver light spilling through the branches like it’s guiding me… or warning me.
I pull my jacket tighter around myself, though I’m not cold. Not really, i just, feel unsettled. Kai said he’d be here. He’s always here. But tonight.. He’s late again.
I could feel my chest tightens slightly at the thought. Don’t start overthinking.
But it’s hard not to. Ethan’s words haven’t left me. You’re relying on him.
I shake my head, and exhaling slowly.
No. That’s not what this is. This is trust and this is…A branch snaps somewhere behind me. I spin instantly.
“Kai?”
Silence followed instead Of answers.
The trees sway slightly, shadows shifting, and stretching unnaturally along the ground.
My pulse quickens, because that feeling again. The one from before, it felt like the air is alive and like something is breathing just under the surface of the world.
“Kai, this isn’t funny,” I say, louder this time.
Still nothing. But then….
I heard a whisper, it was soft and too close. “Luna…”
My heart slams against my ribs. That voice, that was not Kai and not Ethan.
It was something else. I take a step back, with my senses sharpening instantly. “Show yourself.” The words come out stronger than I feel.
The shadows ripple. They actually ripple. Like something moved through them. And then…I feel it, but not outside. It was inside.
A pressure in my chest, it felt deep and heavy. Like something pressing against my ribs from the inside out.
I gasp slightly, clutching at my shirt. No. No, no, no….Not again. But this is different. Because this isn’t power. This isn’t energy. This is… Presence.
“Interesting…” The voice echoes again.
But this time…It’s not in the air. It’s in my head and my knees nearly give out.
“What….what are you?” A soft laugh followed, it was low and ancient.
“You already know.”
My breath shakes. No. No, I don’t.
“I’m not playing games,” I snap, trying to steady myself.
“Then stop pretending you’re still human.” it said.
The words hit hard. Too hard. “I never said I was,” I fire back. “Not out loud.”
The pressure in my chest tightens, as I stagger slightly. “Get out,” I whisper.
“Not yet.”
My vision blurs for a second and the forest spins. And then… i saw a flash. Not a memory, but something else. I see….Darkness, endless and cold.
And something moving inside it. Massive, it was watching and waiting.
My breath catches violently as the image vanishes. I drop to one knee. “What… was that?”
“A glimpse.” the voice said.
“Of what?” I asked.
A pause followed and then.
“Of what is coming.” The voice said.
My stomach twists. No. No, this isn’t real. This can’t be….
A sudden force slams into me from the side and i hit the ground hard, the air knocked from my lungs. “Luna!” a voice screamed.
It was Kai. His voice cuts through everything, sharp, urgent and real.
The pressure in my chest vanishes instantly. Like it was never there.
I suck in a breath, coughing as I push myself up.
“Kai….”
“I told you not to come out here alone,” he snaps, scanning the trees.
“I wasn’t alone,” I say, my voice shaking.
His head turns toward me immediately. “What?”
“There was something here.” I said.
His expression darkens instantly. “What did you see?”
“Not see,” I whisper. “Feel.”
“Talk to me.” He said.
I hesitate. Because how do I even explain that? “There was a voice,” I say slowly. “In my head.” Kai goes still. Completely still. “And?” he asked eager.
“It knew things,” I continue. “About me. About… what I am.”
His jaw tightens. “What did it say exactly?”
“That I’m not human,” I say. “That something is coming.”
“Did it try to hurt you?” he asked.
“No.” I said.
That’s what makes it worse. “It just… watched.”
Kai exhales slowly, running a hand through his hair. “That’s not good.”
“Yeah, I figured.” I said.
He looks around again, his senses clearly on high alert. “It’s gone now,” I say quietly.
“Doesn’t mean it won’t come back.” He said.
“Was it one of the constructs?” I ask.
Kai shakes his head immediately. “No.”
“Then what?” I asked.
His hesitation says everything. “You know something.”
He doesn’t answer right away.
“Kai.” I called out.
He exhales sharply. “There are things,” he says slowly, “older than the constructs.”
My chest tightens. “Older than that?”
“Yeah.” He said.
“That’s not comforting.” I said.
“It’s not supposed to be.” He replied.
I push myself to my feet, brushing dirt off my jeans. “So what, it just decided to… talk to me?”
“Or test you,” he mutters.
My stomach drops. “Test me for what?”
He looks at me. And for a second…I see something I haven’t seen before. I saw fear. Real fear. “I don’t know,” he admits.
Silence falls between us, heavy and it all felt uncertain and then…
“You said you were going to tell me everything,” I remind him quietly.
His expression tightens slightly. “Yeah.”
“Now seems like a good time.” I said.
“Not here.” He replied
Again. Always not here. My frustration spikes. “Kai…”
“Luna, please.” He cut in.
The way he says it….Stops me. There’s something in his voice. Something serious and something real.
“Fine,” I say, crossing my arms slightly. “Then where?”
He hesitates and then…“My place.”
I blink. “Your place?”
“You want answers,” he says. “That’s where you’ll get them.”
Something about that feels… big. Like a line we haven’t crossed yet.
“Okay,” I say slowly.
He nods once and then steps closer carefully. Like he’s checking I’m actually okay. “You sure you’re alright?”
“Yeah,” I say.
But it’s not entirely true. Because I can still feel it, tgat faint, like an echo snd that presence, that voice, it was waiting and watching. Kai reaches for my hand and his fingers touch mine… And something shifts. Not outside, but inside him. I freeze. “What?”
He frowns. “What?”
“You felt that?” I asked.
“Felt what?” he asked too.
I stare at him. Because I know that feeling now. That flicker. That wrongness. It was the same one from before. From the halls and from the moments he went quiet. Something inside him… Moves. Just slightly. Like something adjusting and like something listening.
My stomach drops. “Nothing,” I say quickly.
But it’s a lie. Because suddenly…Everything clicks.
The distance, the secrecy and the way he’s been acting. And Ethan’s words echo in my head. You should be careful who you trust. I squeeze Kai’s hand slightly and testing feeling. And for just a second….Something squeezes back. It was not him. Not entirely. My heart skips. “Let’s go,” Kai says, already turning.
I followed him. Because I need answers and because I trust him. But now…
There’s a new thought in my head. Quiet and terrifying, that what if something else is trusting him too?
