Chapter 89 The Thing Inside Him
Luna’s POV
Kai’s house is darker than I expected. Not just because of the night, but because of the silence. The kind that feels too complete, like the walls are holding their breath. He unlocks the door without a word, pushing it open slowly. The faint creak echoes louder than it should, and I hesitate for just a second before stepping inside. The air feels… different. It feels still and heavy.
“You live alone?” I ask, glancing around.
“Most of the time.” He replied.
That answer doesn’t help. I step further in, my senses prickling. There’s no clutter. No warmth. Just clean lines, dim lights, and shadows that stretch a little too far along the walls. Then Kai closes the door behind us.
The sound clicks louder than it should. It sounds final.
“Sit,” he says, gesturing toward the couch.
I don’t. Not yet..“Kai,” I say, turning to face him. “No more deflecting. No more ‘not here.’ You said you’d tell me everything.”
He nods slowly. “I will.”
“Now.” I hesitated.
A heartbeat followed and then he exhales, running a hand through his hair. “Okay.”
I watch him carefully as he leans against the edge of the table, arms crossing over his chest. “This isn’t just about the constructs,” he begins.
“I figured that.” I said.
“There are layers to this world, Luna. You already know that. The network, the breaches, the guardian system…” He pauses. “Those are just the outer defenses.”
“Against the collectors,” I say quietly.
His jaw tightens. “Yeah.”
“And the thing in the forest?” I press. “That’s not one of them.”
“No.” He replied.
“Then what is it?” I asked further.
Silence settled in, then… “Something older than the system that was built to stop them.” He said finally.
My stomach tightens. “That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does if you think about it,” he says. “The system wasn’t created out of nothing. It was built in response to something.”
“Something worse,” I whisper.
He doesn’t deny it and my chest tightens. “And you know about this?”
“I know enough.” He said.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
“Because it wasn’t supposed to matter.” He said.
I let out a short, and humorless laugh. “It’s literally inside my head, Kai.”
“I know.” He said.
“Then explain.”
He pushes off the table, stepping closer. “It’s not supposed to be able to reach you,” he says. “Not directly.”
“But it did.” I said.
“Yes.” He replied.
“Why?” I asked.
That’s the question. The one hanging between us. Kai hesitates, and that hesitation…Sends a chill down my spine. “Kai.”
He looks at me. And for a second…There’s something there.
Something… off. “It’s because of you,” he says finally.
My chest tightens. “Because I’m an anchor?”
“Because you’re more than that.” He says.
I swallow. “Explain.”
“You’re connected to the system now,” he says. “Not just linked. Integrated.”
“I know that.” I said.
“No,” he says quietly. “You don’t.”
My pulse quickens. “Then tell me.”
“When you absorbed the network energy… you didn’t just stabilize it.” He says.
My breath catches.
“You changed it.” He continued.
Silence fills the room. “What does that mean?”
“It means the system recognizes you as part of itself now,” he says. “And anything that can interact with the system…”
“Can interact with me,” I finish.
“Yeah.” He said.
The realization settles heavily in my chest. “That thing,” I whisper. “It wasn’t just reaching out randomly.”
“No.” He said.
“It was looking for me.”
Kai nods once. “And it found you.”
A chill runs down my spine. “But why?” I ask. “What does it want?”
“That’s the part I don’t know.” He said.
“Or you’re not telling me.” I pushed further
His eyes flash slightly. “I’m telling you everything I can.”
“Everything you can,” I repeat. “Or everything you want to?”
His jaw tightens. “That’s not fair.”
“No,” I say sharply. “What’s not fair is you deciding what I can handle.”
“I’m trying to protect you.” He said.
“I don’t need that.” I said coldly.
“You do.” He said.
“I need the truth!” I shot at him.
The words echo through the room, it was sharp.
And silence follows. Heavy and then…
“Fine,” Kai says quietly.
Something about the way he says it..makes my stomach drop.
“You want the truth?” he asked.
“Yes.” I replied
“It’s not just reaching out to you.” He says.
The air shifts instantly. “What?”
Kai’s gaze holds mine steady and unflinching. “It’s reaching through you.”
My breath catches. “What does that mean?”
“It means it’s using your connection to the system to find other points of access.”
“Access to what?” I asked.
“To this world.” He said.
The words hit me like a punch. “No,” I whisper. “That’s not possible.”
“It is if the system is compromised.” He says.
“It’s not…” I replied.
“Luna.” The way he says my name…Stops me.
“You said it yourself,” he continues. “The guardian core was being overridden. The barrier weakened.”
“That was Ethan.” I said.
“Yes.”
“And this?” His expression darkens. “This is something else.”
“Something smarter.” My chest tightens painfully. “And it’s using me.”
“Yes.” He says.
“No,” I say immediately, shaking my head. “No, that’s not….”
“Luna,” he called.
“I’m not some doorway!” I said angrily.
“I didn’t say you were.” He cut in.
“That’s exactly what you’re saying!” I shot back.
“I’m saying you’re a target.” He says.
The words hang in the air heavy and cold. I take a step back.
“I can control it,” I say, even though I’m not entirely sure.
“Can you?” he asked.
“Yes.” I replied.
“Then why did it reach you tonight?” he asked.
I went silent, because I don’t have an answer. Then Kai exhales slowly. “I’m not blaming you,” he says. “I’m trying to figure out how to stop it.”
“By keeping things from me?” I asked.
“By not overwhelming you.” He says.
“I can handle it.” I said.
“Can you?” he repeats.
The question hits harder this time. Because now…I’m not sure. And he sees it. Of course he does. “That’s why I didn’t want to tell you yet,” he says quietly.
I shake my head. “You should’ve trusted me.”
“I do.” He says.
“Then act like it.” I told him.
Silence falls again and then…. “I am,” he says. Something about that feels wrong, it was not the words, it was the way he says them. Too smooth and too… controlled.
A chill runs down my spine. “Kai…”
He tilts his head slightly. “Yeah?”
That. That right there. There was something in the movement, it was subtle.
But not him. My pulse spikes. “Say my name again,” I whisper.
His brow furrows slightly. “What?”
“Say it.”
“Luna.” I heard the same voice and the same tone. But now…I feel it. That flicker and that presence. The same one from the forest.
My stomach drops. “You feel that?” I ask quietly.
“Feel what?” He steps closer. And my body reacts instantly. Not with comfort.
But with a warning. “Don’t,” I say, stepping back.
His expression shifts with confusion and then something else. Something darker. “Luna…” he says.
“Stop.” My voice comes out sharper than I intended. He freezes and for a second…. Everything is still and then..His eyes flicker. Just for a split second, it was not blue. It was something else, something deeper and it was just as fast.
I felt my heart slam against my ribs. “Kai…”
He blinks. Like he’s snapping out of something. “What?”
My hands start shaking. “You didn’t feel that?”
“Feel what?” he asked. And he sounds genuine. That’s the worst part.
Because either he doesn’t know… Or he’s pretending not to. And I don’t know which is worse.
“There’s something inside you,” I whisper.
The words feel heavy as they leave my mouth. It felt real and final.
Kai goes completely still and then. “That’s not funny.” He says.
“I’m not joking.” His jaw tightens. “There’s nothing inside me.”
“I felt it.” I said.
“You’re projecting.” He says.
“I’m not.” I hesitated.
“You just went through something in the forest….” he added.
“This is different!” I shot back.
The tension spikes instantly sharp and unstable.
“Luna,” he says, his voice lower now. “You’re tired. You’re overwhelmed….”
“No,” I snapped. “You are.”
“That’s enough.” The words are quiet and controlled. But there’s something underneath them. Something that doesn’t belong to him. And this time…. I’m sure of it.
My breath catches. “Kai…”
He takes another step forward, slow and deliberate. And my instincts scream.
Run.
“Get out,” he says softly.
The words don’t sound like a threat. But they feel like one. “What?” I said shocked.
“You should go.” He says.
My chest tightens. “Why?”
“Because you’re not thinking clearly.” He said.
“No,” I whisper. “You’re not.”
His expression hardens slightly. “Luna.”
That tone again. Not him. Not entirely, and suddenly….
I understand. Not fully, but enough. It’s not controlling him. Not yet. But it’s there watching, waiting and learning. Using him the same way it tried to use me.
My stomach twists. “I’m not leaving you like this,” I say.
“You don’t have a choice.” He says. The words hit hard, cold and final.
And this time….I know. That wasn’t Kai.
My heart starts racing.Because whatever is inside him…
Just spoke to me.
