Chapter 40 Blood Moon Rising
Luna’s POV
The pulse in the air wasn’t subtle anymore. It was a drumbeat in my chest, syncing with every instinct, every nerve ending, every heartbeat. The Blood Moon was coming, and with it, everything we’d feared….and more.
Kai’s hand stayed locked with mine, his fingers warm, steadying. His other hand hovered at the ready, claws slightly extended, muscles taut like coiled springs. I could feel him, his tension, his power, his need to protect me. And I knew… if I faltered, the world could burn.
Ethan’s presence radiated across the gym, a shadow darker than the night outside, a force that made the very air shiver. The calm predator I’d once trusted as my friend had disappeared. In his place was something older, stronger, ruthless.
“Tonight,” he said softly, voice echoing in the gym even though he barely raised it, “everything changes. And you, Luna… you’ll either rise… or break.”
The shadows along the walls twisted, responding to my fear, my anger, my defiance. Tyler lay crumpled near the lockers, recovering from my intervention. He whimpered softly, twitching, eyes flickering between human and something else. I swallowed hard. I couldn’t save everyone tonight…But I could try.
Kai leaned close, voice barely audible. “We need a plan. He’ll push harder once the moon rises fully. His power….whatever he’s doing with Tyler…he’ll amplify it. You’re going to have to fight, Luna… and trust yourself.”
I nodded, though my throat was tight. My powers were buzzing uncontrollably now, responding to the Blood Moon’s pull. The shadows were alive at my command, but I could feel Ethan pulling against them, trying to twist them, bend them to his will.
“Luna,” he said, finally moving closer. His calm, predatory smile was back, sharp and infuriating. “I can feel it. Your fear. Your hesitation. And it’s delicious. Why fight it? Join me. You’ll be stronger than you ever imagined.”
I stepped forward, letting the shadows flow around me like a living cloak. “Never,” I spat.
Kai’s eyes darkened. “Luna…don’t…”
But I didn’t wait. I didn’t care.
The Blood Moon had risen fully now, a crimson orb visible through the gym’s windows. Its light poured in, washing over everyone, illuminating the tension, amplifying the energy in the air. The shadows at my command throbbed, stretching and writhing. They pulsed with anticipation.
Ethan’s expression darkened as he extended a hand, and Tyler…still halfway consumed by the dark energy…lunged toward me again. The shadows responded instantly, wrapping around him like chains, yanking him back with an almost sentient force. Tyler screamed, half-human, half something else, and then froze.
Ethan stepped forward, a swirl of dark energy rising around his hands. “You think you can contain him? You think you can contain me?”
Kai growled, low and dangerous. He surged forward, claws extended, and energy crackled around him. “Luna, together. Now!”
I felt the surge in my chest explode. Power I hadn’t fully accessed—power older than I was, inherited through my bloodline…roared to the surface.
Shadows leapt at Ethan, twisting, striking like living spears.
He staggered back, eyes widening slightly. “Impressive,” he murmured. “But not enough.”
The floor under us shook. Students screamed, scattering, phones recording everything, oblivious to the true danger. The Blood Moon’s energy thickened, almost tangible, pressing against my skin. My power, Kai’s power, the darkness Ethan controlled…they collided, a storm waiting to erupt.
Tyler twisted violently again, but I ignored him, focusing on Ethan. I could feel his energy, his manipulation, his control. He was trying to draw my shadows, my strength, into him. But I wasn’t afraid anymore. I wouldn’t be.
“Not this time,” I whispered.
Kai lunged alongside me, moving as one, our instincts perfectly synced.
Claws met shadows, strength met force, and the gym exploded in motion.
Lights flickered. Decorations ripped from the walls. The sound of tearing metal, breaking wood, and unnatural screeches filled the air.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “You’re both… insufferable.” He raised his hands, and a wave of darkness surged, aimed at Kai and me both.
I stepped forward, shadows whipping around me, meeting his attack head-on. The force slammed into me like a tidal wave, knocking me backward, but I didn’t falter. The Blood Moon energy inside me flared, surging through the shadows, reinforcing me, strengthening me.
Kai tackled Ethan mid-strike, knocking him off balance, but Ethan twisted, pulling both of us into a swirl of red light. The energy pressed in, hot and burning, and my vision blurred. I could feel Tyler writhing nearby, the darkness within him still tugging at the edges of reality.
Breath ragged, hands trembling, I locked eyes with Kai. “Now,” I shouted.
Together, we pushed. Shadows, claws, and raw instinct collided with Ethan’s darkness. The gym shook violently. Light and shadow danced across the walls in violent streaks. Students screamed, falling to the floor, and yet… in the center of it all, I felt it. The balance shift. The tide is turning.
Ethan’s scream echoed, a mix of frustration, pain, and disbelief. He stumbled back, finally losing control of Tyler completely. The boy collapsed, human again, groaning but alive.
I fell to my knees, panting, shadows swirling around me protectively. Kai stayed beside me, chest heaving, claws retracting slowly. The Blood Moon’s energy pulsed, still powerful, but for the first time… I could control it.
Ethan stood across the gym, glaring, furious, but alive. For now. His smile returned, thin, dangerous. “This… isn’t over.”
I swallowed, voice raw. “Neither is this.”
Kai pulled me close, voice low. “We survived tonight. That’s what matters.”
I nodded, but my heart still raced. The Blood Moon had come. And now I understood: surviving wasn’t enough. We had to be ready for the next night. The next fight. The real reckoning.
Because Ethan wasn’t just a threat anymore. He was the storm. And the storm… had only just begun.
