Chapter 41 After the Storm
Luna’s POV
The gym was a mess. Lockers torn from walls, lights flickering, glass shattered across the floor. Students huddled in corners, phones out, recording everything with wide, terrified eyes. But I barely saw them. My focus was on Kai, on Ethan, and the aftermath of what had just happened.
Kai’s hand was still around mine, grounding me. His chest heaved, his claws slowly retracting as he forced his wolf instincts under control. Every time I looked at him, I was reminded just how close we’d been to losing everything.
Tyler lay a few feet away, shivering but breathing, his eyes flickering between fear and confusion. The darkness that had possessed him was gone… for now.
Ethan, though… he was different. The storm in his eyes hadn’t vanished. He didn’t retreat entirely. Instead, he lingered near the shattered windows, one hand brushing against the frames, his expression calm, almost mocking.
“You survived,” he said softly, almost conversational. “I have to admit… I didn’t think you’d handle the Blood Moon so well.”
Kai growled low in his throat, sharp and warning. “You won’t get the chance to test her again.”
Ethan tilted his head, studying us both like predators circling. “Oh, but I will. You think tonight was a victory? A lesson learned? No. Tonight was… a preview.” His eyes met mine, cold and piercing. “I wanted you to see what you’re capable of. And now you know. The question is… will you survive when I’m not holding back?”
I could feel my shadows pulsing around me, twitching like restless animals. My hands itched with the need to strike, to destroy, but I forced myself to remain calm. I couldn’t let my emotions dictate the fight. Not yet. Not with Kai holding me steady and the entire school watching.
“I’m done listening to your games, Ethan,” I said, voice shaking but firm. “This ends now.”
Ethan’s lips curved into a slow, deliberate smile. “Oh, Luna. You’re bold. Brave. And dangerously foolish. But I like it. I like you.”
I clenched my fists, summoning the shadows around me again. They responded instantly, coiling and stretching like living tendrils. Kai stepped forward, muscles taut, his own energy flaring, ready to act if Ethan moved even slightly.
“I don’t care how strong you think you are,” Kai growled. “If you touch her again, I’ll end this. Tonight, tomorrow… doesn’t matter. You will regret it.”
Ethan’s laugh was quiet, but sharp, slicing through the tension in the air.
“You’re sweet, Kai. Truly. But power… power isn’t always about strength or control. Sometimes… it’s about knowing how to push the right buttons. Fear, desire, loyalty… They’re more powerful than any claw or spell.”
I swallowed hard. The words hit me like a punch. Ethan was right, like he had already pushed every limit we had tonight. He’d exposed me. Tested me.
Forced Kai to fight his own control. And worst of all, he’d done it with a smile.
I stepped closer to Kai, letting the shadows swirl protectively around both of us. “We’ll stop him,” I whispered. “We have to. Before he hurts anyone else… before he…”
Before he takes everything.
Kai’s hand tightened around mine. “We will. But we need to plan. We can’t just rush in blindly again. He’s smarter than we realize, and tonight… tonight proved it.”
I nodded, feeling the exhaustion settling in like lead in my bones. My power still hummed, buzzing from the Blood Moon’s influence, but my body trembled from the effort. This was just the beginning. I could feel it in my bones. Ethan wasn’t finished.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Tyler slowly sitting up, his body trembling. He looked at me, fear in his eyes but also recognition. “I… I remember…” he whispered. His voice broke, faltering. “Some of it. Not all… but it wasn’t me. He…”
“He what?” I demanded.
Ethan’s calm voice cut in again, smooth and unnerving. “He’s a puppet, like so many others will be. And Luna… you’ll have to learn quickly that some strings can’t be cut without a fight.”
I felt a surge of anger unlike anything I’d ever known. He’d hurt people. Manipulated them. Turned them into weapons. And for what? Control. Power. A twisted game.
Kai’s jaw tightened. “We fight back,” he said simply. “And we end this. Whatever it takes.”
I nodded, feeling a spark of determination flare inside me. The shadows around me pulsed again, answering to my will. Tonight had shown me my strength…but it had also shown me my weakness. Ethan had learned more about me than I’d realized, and I had to be ready for whatever came next.
The Blood Moon still hung high outside the broken windows, casting a crimson glow across the shattered gym. Its light reflected in Ethan’s eyes, making him look almost untouchable. But I could see the faintest flicker of hesitation. He underestimated me.
I wouldn’t make that mistake again.
Kai leaned closer, whispering into my ear. “We’ll survive this… together.”
I nodded, swallowing my fear. Together. We had to be strong…for Tyler, for the others, and for ourselves.
And I knew… the real battle wasn’t over. Not yet.
Ethan’s shadowed form lingered in the distance, his smile sharp and knowing. “This isn’t the end, Luna,” he murmured. “It’s only the beginning.”
I clenched my fists, shadows coiling tighter around me. “Then let’s make sure the beginning of your end starts… tonight.”
Kai gave a low growl, ready for anything. And for the first time since the Blood Moon rose, I felt… ready too
.
The storm was coming. And this time, we would meet it head-on…
