Chapter 99 Like Moth to a Flame

Chapter 99 Like Moth to a Flame

My boots echoed alongside the noise of construction going on in the Black Dias Cartel. I weaved my way through corridors desperately trying to locate her room.

Alia.

I screeched to a stop in front of a large double door. I raised my hand up to knock then drew back once I heard voices coming from within.

The door opened softly, I smiled at the nurses politely as they scurried out, after a while their low chatter faded into the distance.

“How long are you going to stand there?” Alia shouted.

I popped my head in with a tight grin. Staring at her as she sat on her bed. “Uhh… I just wanted to see how you're doing?”

She pursed her lips in annoyance. “That's why you stood out there?”

“I just didn't kn-”

“Come in already, you're letting the chill get in,” she groaned, turning back around.

I quickly stepped in and closed the door, then walked towards her in apprehension.

“You can sit down,” she said.

I gingerly took my seat close to her on the bed and stared out the window.

“You have a nice room,” I commented.

She stared at me unamused and panic immediately flared up. My eyes drifted to hers, staring at her bruised and bandaged face.

Slowly her lips broke into a small smile. “Relax, I'm not going to hurt you” she scoffed lightly.

I smiled also, basking in the silence as we both stared outside the window.

“How has he been? Roe. How has he been?” she asked, voice quiet.

“I really don't know how to answer that, we're not very close and our relationship is strictly platonic” I rambled.

She rolled her eyes. “I still don't know if it's denial or you're both just agonizingly dumb”

“Excuse me, that wasn't very nice Ali,” I smirked.

“I could knock your teeth out you know,”

I laughed loudly. “I'm pretty sure I can take you”

Once again, silence fell.

She grunted. “You're one lucky girl you know,”

I frowned slightly. “How so?”

“I mean you have it all, pretty face, perky tits, nice boob, you're intelligent and you reek of goody two shoes in the highest frequency.”

“Seriously?” I said, laughing softly.
“And yet here I was envying you.”

At this… she stared at me in confusion. “How so?”

“I mean… you're so cool, when I watched you fight… I was so in awe, so… envious of you, I like your comfortable sense of fashion, how you carry yourself. You say anything on your mind, you're crass” I giggled. “I always have to be polite when talking to people cos I'm afraid to upset them and most times it dims what I really want to say. You may act tough but deep down you're really sweet….. And you calling Gabriel a perv was so comical,” I cackled loudly.

But she only stared at me in an odd manner. I quickly composed myself and cleared my throat.

“I'm sorry I did-”

She slapped me hard on my back, sending me tumbling to the ground.

“Jesus Christ, what was that for?” I asked staring at her as I stood up quickly.

“You should start by not apologizing for every little thing,”

I blinked in shock, mouth agape… then I went back and sat beside her.

“You should've just said that,” I grumbled.

“Experience is the best teacher after all,”

A question popped into my mind and before I could stop myself, I blurted it.

“What was Ronan like… when he was younger?”

She glanced at me then back to the window.

“He's always been like this honestly, he just used to be more carefree. We all used to play together, he's so… thoughtful, gentlemanly, sweet, an upstanding kid and a better son, silly young me used to think we'd actually get married,” she said, with a small smile, staring at her feet as they dangled back and forth above ground.

“Father liked him so much you know, I guess that made Zee feel unseen but then Zee had always been a weird kid. The complete opposite or Ronan and yet somehow… they always got along well. You'd be surprised to know there isn't any bad blood between them, from the onset Zee never really cared much about taking over the Cartel, he's just fine playing games. Funny how he's actually doing well as the boss,”

She threw her legs up on the bed, moving to the middle and tapped for me to follow.

“I like you…” she said suddenly, with a light blush on her cheeks.

“Umm… thanks I guess…” I drew. Then face palmed. “I mean I like you too,” I rushed out.

She laughed softly, pushing her knees up to her chest, then rested her chin on it.

“I can see why Ronan likes you, you're just so adorable, you're not like us. You have this glow about you… like a moth to a flame. People like us will always be drawn to the good in people like you,”

“I don't thi-”

She moved close to me, face inches away from mine. “Like moth to a flame, till one of us ruins the other.” She murmured then assumed her previous position.

“I'm glad he's surrounded by your light Agnes, I mean there's nothing I'd wish him more than happiness,” she hesitated, “but at the same time, I'll be sincere with you and ask you to leave, as a friend. I can see your light flickering already… It won't be long till this world ruins you too.”

She was right in a sense that my light or my state or mind rather was flickering.

I'd stared as someone was beaten and killed and never once did I speak up against it… all I'd been doing was trying to judge it in a logical way.

I was slowly shifting from my duty as a federal agent to thinking like a Mafia member.

Why was I still here again?

Was the mission really important than protecting my mind and heart?

I stared at Alia as she gazed at the ceiling thoughtfully.

“Maybe that's why he isn't making any advances…” she mumbled to herself. “He must like you that much to want to protect you against himself but he's still too selfish to let you go.”

I opened my mouth to ask her what she meant but a knock at the door cut me mid-sentence.

“Come in,” Aria said.

The door opened and a horde of maids with trolleys and nurses with IVs and bags walked into her room, pausing in surprise as they saw me.

“I'll take my leave” I said.

She stated at me for a while, then nodded slowly. “See you around Aggy,”

“You too Ali,” I said pulling the door open.

I could hear her whine about Ali being a boy's name as the door closed behind, leaving me to walk away deep in my thoughts.

Shit.

I'd forgotten to ask her what the captain meant by the restricted one.

I exhaled heavily, I guess it'll be better to ask someone else instead of her.

After all… she didn't seem very proud of who she was.
