Chapter 128 The Weight of Truth

Chapter 128 The Weight of Truth
They left the prison in silence.

Kaela walked like a woman in a dream, her feet carrying her forward while her mind remained trapped in that cell. Magnus. The rigged trials. Her brother's murder was disguised as combat.

Everything she thought she knew had been a lie.

Dagon walked beside her, his face pale. He hadn't spoken since the Emperor's revelation and hadn't looked at her.

"Dagon." She stopped in the middle of the street. "Talk to me."

"What is there to say?" His voice was rough. "Magnus used me. Set me up to kill your brother, and when I refused, he killed Kieran anyway and let me carry the guilt."

"You couldn't have known."

"I should have known. Should have questioned why they paired us together. Why did they make such a spectacle of it?" His hands clenched. "I spent four years thinking I was responsible for Kieran's death. Four years of nightmares and guilt and hating myself for surviving."

"That's what they wanted. Magnus and the Emperor. They wanted you broken and compliant."

"And it worked." Dagon laughed bitterly. "I became exactly what they needed. The perfect soldier. Following orders without question because I thought I owed a debt for the life I'd taken."

Kaela took his face in her hands, forced him to look at her.

"You are not responsible for my brother's death. Do you understand me? You tried to save him. You threw down your weapon and tried to walk away. The only people responsible are the ones who rigged the arena."

"Magnus is dead. I can't even have the satisfaction of killing him myself."

"Your father killed him. Burned him alive while Magnus's shadows tore him apart." She held his gaze. "Anton died destroying the man who murdered Kieran. That's nothing."

Something shifted in Dagon's expression. The self-hatred eased slightly, replaced by something more complicated.

"My father knew," he said slowly. "He must have known something was wrong with that trial. The way he pushed for reforms afterwards. The way he fought against Magnus at every turn."

"Maybe that's why he fought so hard. Because he understood what the trials really were."

They stood in the street as people moved around them, giving thema wide berth. The general's son and the slum girl, bound together by grief and truth and the weight of secrets finally revealed.

"What do we do now?" Dagon asked.

"We go back tomorrow. We make the Emperor tell us everything." Kaela's jaw tightened. "If the corruption goes deeper than him, if there are others involved, we need to know. We need to root out every person who profited from rigged trials and murdered children."

"And then?"

"Then we burn it all down. Every system. Every tradition. Every noble house that built its power on common blood." She took his hand. "We build something new. Something clean."

"That could take years. Decades."

"I know. But Kieran died trying to expose the truth. Sophia died fighting for a better world. Vanya. Your father. Everyone we lost." Her voice hardened. "We owe them more than just surviving. We owe them change."

Dagon stared at her for a long moment. Then he pulled her close, wrapped his arms around her, held her like she was the only solid thing in a world that had turned to sand.

"Together," he said against her hair.

"Together."

They walked back to Maren's safehouse hand in hand.

The others were waiting. Louise and Taren. Brin and Selene. Maren herself was standing in the doorway with tea already prepared.

"Well?" Louise asked as they entered. "What did he say?"

Kaela looked at the faces of her friends. Her family. The people who deserved to know the truth about what they had survived.

"Sit down," she said. "All of you. This is going to take a while."

She told them everything.

The rigged trials. The list of students marked for death. Magnus's role in Kieran's murder. The fire traps were activated to kill a boy who asked too many questions.

When she finished, silence filled the room.

"Gods," Louise breathed. "My father fought against Magnus for years. I never understood why they hated each other so much."

"Now you know. Your father was fighting against a system designed to murder children for entertainment." Kaela looked at each of them in turn. "And that system didn't die with the Emperor. There are others involved. People who created those lists. People who profited from predetermined outcomes."

"How do we find them?" Selene asked.

"The Emperor said he would tell us more. Tomorrow, when he's rested." Kaela's expression hardened. "We get names. We get evidence. And then we make sure everyone responsible faces justice."

"What if he dies before tomorrow?" Taren asked quietly. "His condition is deteriorating rapidly."

"Then we find another way. We search the archives. We interrogate the surviving soldiers. We tear the academy apart stone by stone until we find the truth."

Brin had been silent throughout, his eyes distant. Now he spoke.

"I might be able to help. When I was in the Emperor's mind during the battle, I caught fragments. Memories. Names." He hesitated. "I didn't understand what I was seeing at the time. But if I can piece them together..."

"Do it. Anything you can find."

"There's something else." Brin's expression was troubled. "When I was blocking the Emperor's telepathy, I sensed something beneath the surface. A list. Not of students marked for death, but of students marked for something else."

"Marked for what?"

"Survival. Protection." Brin met her eyes. "Your name was on that list, Kaela. And so was Dagon's."

The room went still.

"What are you saying?" Kaela's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"I'm saying someone wanted you both to survive. Someone powerful enough to influence the trials. Someone who wasn't the Emperor."

"Who?"

"I don't know. The memory was fragmented. But I got the impression..." Brin paused, choosing his words carefully. "I got the impression it had something to do with Kieran. With what he discovered before he died."

Kaela's mind raced. Kieran had found the list. Had tried to expose the corruption. Had died for it.

But what if he'd done more than just find evidence? What if he'd found allies? People inside the system who wanted to bring it down?

"My brother," she said slowly. "What if Kieran wasn't working alone? What if others wanted reform, who wanted to destroy the trials from inside?"

"And they protected you," Louise finished. "Made sure you survived so you could finish what Kieran started."

"That's why everything felt so impossible," Dagon said. "How we kept surviving things that should have killed us. How we always found allies at the right moment."

"Someone was watching over us." Kaela thought of all the close calls. All the narrow escapes. All the moments when luck had seemed to intervene. "Someone who knew what Kieran died for and wanted us to complete his mission."

"The question is who," Maren spoke for the first time, her weathered face thoughtful. "Who has that kind of power? Who could manipulate the trials without the Emperor knowing?"

Kaela didn't have an answer.

But she intended to find one.

"Tomorrow," she said. "We go back to the Emperor, and we get every name, every secret, every piece of truth he's hoarding. And then we find whoever was protecting us, and we get answers."

"And if they're enemies?" Selene asked.

"Then we deal with them the same way we dealt with the Emperor." Kaela's voice was steel. "But if they're allies, if they've been fighting this corruption from the shadows..."

"Then we bring them into the light," Dagon finished. "And we finish this together."

Outside, the sun was setting. Another day ending. Another step closer to the truth.

Kaela looked at the people around her. Battered. Grieving. But alive.

Kieran had died trying to change the world.

She would make sure his death meant something.

No matter what it costs.
