Chapter 129 Final Words
Chapter 129 Final Words
The Emperor was worse the next morning.
Kaela knew it the moment she entered the cell. His skin had turned grey overnight, stretched tight across bones that seemed more prominent than before. His breathing came in shallow rattles. His eyes, when they opened, took several seconds to focus.
"You came back." His voice was a whisper now. No strength left for games.
"You said you had more to tell me."
"Yes." He tried to sit up and failed. Taren moved forward instinctively, the healer in him responding to suffering even when it belonged to a monster.
"Don't waste your magic on me, boy." Lucian waved him away weakly. "Nothing can fix what's eating my brain. Save your strength for people worth saving."
Taren stepped back, his face conflicted.
Kaela knelt beside the bench where the Emperor lay, bringing herself to his eye level. This close, she could see the burst blood vessels in his eyes. The tremor in his jaw. The way his pupils dilated and contracted at random intervals.
"The list," she said. "The students marked for survival. Who made it?"
"Ah." A ghost of a smile crossed his ruined face. "You figured that out. Clever girl."
"Who was it?"
"Someone I never identified. Someone who worked against me for years without my knowledge." He coughed weakly. "It started after your brother died. Students who should have fallen in the trials kept surviving. Not obviously. Not every time. But enough to notice if you were paying attention."
"And you were paying attention."
"Always. That's how you stay Emperor for forty-three years." His eyes drifted, then snapped back to focus. "I investigated. Had Magnus investigate. We found nothing. Whoever it was, they covered their tracks perfectly."
"But you have suspicions."
"Suspicions, yes. Proof, no." Lucian's hand twitched toward her, then fell back. "The reforms your friend's father pushed. Anton Vale. They weren't his idea originally."
"What do you mean?"
"Someone fed him information. Documents proving the trials were rigged. Names of students who had been murdered to ensure noble victories." The Emperor's breath rattled. "Anton thought he discovered it himself. He didn't. Someone wanted him to find it. Wanted him to become the face of reform."
"Who?"
"I told you. I don't know." Frustration flickered across his features. "But I know they had access to the highest levels of the academy. Access to trial records. Access to arena controls."
Kaela's mind raced through possibilities. Someone powerful. Someone hidden. Someone who had been working against the Emperor for years without detection.
"The other generals," she said. "Could one of them—"
"Magnus was loyal. Stupid but loyal. The others..." Lucian paused, his eyes losing focus again. When they returned, there was something different in them. Fear. "There was one. Years ago. A general who questioned my methods. Who argued for mercy in the trials?"
"Who?"
"General Ashworth. Helena Ashworth." The name seemed to cost him something. "I had her executed fifteen years ago. Treason, I called it. But she had a daughter. A daughter who disappeared before I could eliminate the bloodline."
"Where did she go?"
"No one knows. She vanished completely. Changed her name. Changed her face, maybe. She would be... forty now. Perhaps forty-five." His eyes locked onto hers with sudden intensity. "Old enough to have spent decades building a network. Placing allies in key positions. Protecting students who reminded her of what her mother died for."
"You think General Ashworth's daughter is behind this?"
"I think someone is. And she had more reason to hate me than most." Lucian's voice was fading, each word requiring visible effort. "Find her. If she exists. If she's been working against me all these years..."
"If she has?"
"Then she's the most dangerous person in this empire. Patient. Ruthless. Willing to sacrifice pawns for the long game." A wet laugh escaped him. "Rather like me, actually. Perhaps that's why I could never catch her."
His eyes drifted closed. For a moment, Kaela thought he had died. Then his chest rose with another laboured breath.
"There's something else," he whispered. "Something I need to tell you about Kieran."
Her heart clenched. "What about him?"
"The night before his final trial. He came to me."
"What?"
"Walked right into the throne room. Guards tried to stop him, but I was curious. Let him approach." Lucian's lips curved in what might have been admiration. "Brave boy. Stupid, but brave."
"What did he want?"
"To negotiate. He had evidence of the rigged trials. Names and dates and proof that would bring down half the noble houses in the empire." The Emperor's eyes opened again, fixing on her face. "He offered to destroy it all. Every document. Every record. In exchange for one thing."
"What thing?"
"Your safety. He wanted a guarantee that you would never be forced into the trials. That you would be left alone to live your life in peace."
Tears burned Kaela's eyes. Kieran. Her brother. Trying to protect her even at the end.
"What did you tell him?"
"I told him I would consider it. Told him to return after his trial and we would discuss terms." Lucian's voice cracked. "I never intended tohonourr any agreement. I just wanted him to be calm. Compliant. Easier to kill."
"You bastard."
"Yes." No denial. No excuse. "But you should know what he did. What he was willing to sacrifice for you. Your brother loved you more than his own life. More than justice. More than truth."
"And you killed him anyway."
"I did." The Emperor's eyes were wet. Kaela couldn't tell if it was emotion or simply his body failing. "For what it's worth, I regret it now. Not because it was wrong. Because it was wasteful. Kieran Varn could have been useful. Could have been shaped into something powerful."
"He was already something powerful. Something you could never understand."
"Perhaps." His breath hitched. "Perhaps that's why I had to destroy him. I couldn't control him. Couldn't corrupt him. Couldn't make him into another version of myself." A pause. "You're the same. That's why I found you so... interesting."
"I'm nothing like my brother. He was good. Kind. Hopeful."
"And you're hard. Ruthless when you need to be. Willing to make difficult choices." The Emperor smiled weakly. "You would have made an excellent heir. If things had been different."
"I would rather die than become anything like you."
"Everyone says that. Until they taste power." His eyes fluttered. "I'm tired now. So tired. The darkness keeps pulling at me."
"Then let it take you."
"Not yet. One more thing." He gathered himself with visible effort. "The academy archives. Third level below ground. There's a room that doesn't appear on any map. Magnus used it to store evidence of the rigged trials. Everything is there. Names. Dates. Every student who was murdered to ensure the right winner."
"How do I access it?"
"Magnus had a key. A medallion with a serpent eating its own tail. He wore it always." Lucian's voice was barely audible now. "Find the medallion. Find the room. And burn it all to the ground."
"I won't burn evidence. I'll use it to bring justice to every family that lost a child."
"Then you're a better person than I ever was." His eyes closed. "Strange. I didn't think I would mind dying. But I find... I find I'm afraid after all."
"Good."
"Yes. I suppose I deserve that." His breathing slowed. "One last thing, Kaela Varn. One last secret."
"What?"
"The woman who protected you. The one I could never find." His voice was almost gone now, each word a struggle. "She visited me once. Three years ago. Wore a mask. Told me that my time was ending. That children would tear down everything I built."
"What did she look like?"
"I couldn't see her face. But her voice..." His eyes opened one last time, clarity flickering briefly. "Her voice sounded like yours. The same accent. The same cadence."
Kaela's blood froze.
"Someone from the slums," she whispered.
"Yes. Someone who knew exactly what the trials cost the common people. Someone with reason to hate everything I represent." His breath rattled. "Find her. And when you do..."
"When I do, what?"
But the Emperor didn't answer.
His chest rose once more, then fell, then didn't rise again.
Emperor Lucian Valdric, ruler of the empire for forty-three years, was dead.
