Chapter 149 chapter 149

Chapter 149 chapter 149
Carlota's POV

Even though I was training hard, I still felt a little bit unhappy and no freedom at all. I kept thinking of my mom. What must she be going through right now because I haven't been able to talk to her? She must hate all these people, but she's powerless to do anything.

I didn't even want to have any contact with her in case she was targeted by them. I don't want them to use her to threaten me into giving in. I know when people are desperate and what they can do. I do not want my mom to be caught in the middle of all of that.

Gabriel came towards me with a smile on his face. He wasn't smiling much the past few days, so I don't know what was making him smile this much.

"What's wrong with you? You look like you're extremely happy about something," I asked him.

"That's because I have a surprise for you," he said to me.

I shook my head. "Now it's not the time for any surprise, and you don't think I'm possibly going to appreciate anything right now. I'm sorry."

"Why don't you look at it first and decide if you want to appreciate it or not?" I heard a very familiar voice that I thought I was going crazy.

This person definitely sounded like my mom. I'm not crazy at all. Gabriel suddenly moved away, and there was my mom behind him. I couldn't explain the feeling I had inside me. Was it excitement? Happiness? Or was it worry for her coming here? I didn't even know how to react, but at the same time I knew that I missed my mom.

"Mom!" I called and ran to hug her. "What are you doing here, Mom?"

"Look at you. You look like you're going through a lot these days. Why don't you just come with me? You're my daughter, and no one can stop you from being with me. Even if I have to risk my life, I will protect you. You don't have to do all of this," she said to me.

I pulled away from the hug. "Mom, you have to leave this place. It's dangerous for you to be here. I don't want anything to happen to you."

She shook her head, gently stroking my hair. "Look at how you are worried about me, and I can't even do anything for my poor child."

I tried to stop the tears in my eyes. I didn't want her to get too excited or worried about me anymore. She already came here, and I knew that it couldn't be Gabriel's fault. She must have contacted him since I wasn't trying to contact her.

I looked at him with a smile. "Thank you for bringing her here. I would have to trouble you to take her back."

He nodded. "Just take your time. Whenever she's ready to go, I will be here to take her back. I promise you she'll be safe with me."

I looked at the other side, and I could see Paxton staring at us. He must be mad that Gabriel was able to bring my mom here after all. She's working for them, and they are more connected to each other than Paxton would ever be.

"Don't trouble the young master. I'm going to take a taxi when I'm ready to go," Mom said to me.

"No, Mom, you can't go on your own," I replied. "You have to go with him so that you can be safe. After this time, you don't have to come here, Mom."

"Why do you keep sending me away?" she asked, sounding offended.

I didn't know what to say as I started my words. "Mom... I... I..."

"I was worried about you and I rushed here all the way just to see you. Get what you want to do is to send me out of your life? This is how you treat your mother?" she questioned me.

This made me feel guilty immediately. She was worried about me, but I felt the same way about her. The only reason I'm sending her away is because I don't want those people using her against me. I'm not important—what if I lose my temper and I hurt her? I don't want that to happen.

"I'm sorry, Mom. I didn't mean it like that," I apologized to her.

She shook her head. "It's nothing. I brought a lot of things for cooking, and I'm going to make you a meal before I go. I'm allowed to do that at least, right?"

I agreed because I never would have been able to finish arguing with her. We both headed to the kitchen, and I watched as she made me some food. It made me remember all the times we spent together and how she had always been concerned about me.

For her, the only person she cares about is me, even though she's very strict at times. I know she's doing everything to protect me, and I'm just the one who's not making things easy for her.

I helped her around the kitchen, though she didn't want me to help. Strangely enough, Gabriel and Paxton came to help with it too. Mom looked at them like they were weird, and then she realized what was going on between them.

We all sat down at the table to eat after Mom was done cooking, and I couldn't be more happy to have us all together eating like this. Mom kept looking at the both of them without saying a word, and I could tell that they were a little bit uncomfortable around her, so I wanted her to leave as soon as possible because those council people are going to come anyway.

After she was done, she was ready to leave with Gabriel. She called me inside to talk to me.

"I can see how those people are acting around you. Those two are brothers, right?" she asked me. I nodded. "How do you know that?"

"Because I know about the illegitimate son of the people I work for. I just didn't think that they were both interested in you."

My cheeks burned red. "Mom, you shouldn't be talking about things like this now."

She smiled at me. "That's enough. Don't worry, I'm going to keep your secret. I just hope none of them get hurt since I heard you have to choose one of them."

I sighed. "I really don't know who the moon is going to choose, but no matter what, I don't want anyone to die because of me. So I'm going to find a way around this, Mom. Don't worry."

She hugged me again. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine."

"Thank you, Mom. I'm so happy to have seen you today, even though I didn't want you to come," I said to her.

"Silly child, of course I know you just want to protect me. I'm going to take my leave now so that we stop getting worried. Do whatever you have to do, and if you have no way out, I'll always be at home waiting for you. I hope this is done as soon as possible."

"I hope so too," I said to her as she left and waved.

Paxton watched as they left. "Do you really want to go home, or do you want to stay here and listen to those elders control you?"
