Break in
Break in
Lyra woke before dawn. The forest outside the safe house was still dark and silent, except for the distant call of birds beginning their morning songs. She rubbed her eyes, trying to shake off the fatigue, but her mind was already racing. Today was the day they would hit the lab.
Damien was already awake, checking the weapons and gear they had packed. “Are you ready?” he asked softly, not looking up from the knives he was organizing.
Lyra nodded, swallowing hard. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”
Maya joined them with a serious look. “Everyone knows the plan. Safe scouts ahead. We move fast, stay quiet, and get in and out. No mistakes.”
Jack was pacing, muttering under his breath. “I don’t like this. Not one bit.”
“You will survive if you stay focused,” Cole said calmly, checking the vials in his bag. “Panic will get you killed faster than any enemy.”
Kade and Rowan finished loading their weapons. “Let’s move,” Kade said, his voice steady.
Safe led the way. She moved silently, blending with the shadows of the trees. Lyra followed closely, Damien beside her, their senses alert for any sign of danger.
The lab was hidden in a remote area, a small compound with high fences and guards walking the perimeter. Safe signaled to stop. She crouched low, pointing at a side entrance. “Here. Fewer guards, less chance of being seen.”
Maya nodded. “Good. We stick together.”
They slipped inside, moving like shadows. Lyra’s heart pounded. Every step made her tense. She could feel the energy inside her, ready to explode if needed.
“Stop,” Safe whispered. “Two guards ahead. Let me handle this.”
Before anyone could respond, she shifted, her form blurring, and became a shadow of one of the guards. Lyra blinked in surprise. Safe moved quickly, taking the guards down silently without a sound.
“Impressive,” Damien whispered.
They entered the lab. The interior was clean, bright, and chillingly quiet. Rows of glass containers held strange specimens—hybrids, some human, some animal, some in between. Lyra felt her stomach tighten.
Maya led them deeper. “We find the files. Any information on who is behind this, what they’re making, everything. Then we destroy it.”
They moved carefully, checking each room. Jack picked locks, Cole covered entrances, and Kade kept an eye on the cameras.
Suddenly, alarms blared. Red lights flashed.
“They saw us!” Rowan shouted.
“Split up!” Maya yelled. “Damien, Lyra, go this way! The rest cover the exits!”
Lyra and Damien ran down a narrow corridor. Safe followed, blending with the shadows. They reached a lab filled with files, computers, and vials.
“Grab everything you can,” Lyra said, hands shaking slightly.
Damien started pulling hard drives and files from the cabinets. Lyra collected vials and documents. Safe scanned the room for any sign of reinforcements.
“Too quiet,” Safe whispered. “They are coming.”
A heavy footstep echoed. The group turned, weapons ready. A man in a lab coat appeared at the doorway. He smiled, calm but dangerous.
“You really think you can steal from me?” he said.
Lyra felt rage rise. “We’re ending this. All of it.”
The man laughed. “Bold words. But you cannot stop progress.”
Damien stepped forward. “Then we will make sure you fail.”
The man’s eyes glowed faintly. Energy rippled around him. Lyra felt the pressure push against her chest.
“Hold nothing back,” Maya shouted from the communicator. “We have your backs.”
Lyra took a deep breath, focusing. Power surged through her. She moved like a storm, energy crackling around her hands. Damien followed, his own power flaring.
The man attacked, sending out waves of force, but Lyra dodged, striking with precision. Safe shifted again, becoming a shadow form, slipping behind him. Damien slammed into the man, knocking him off balance.
Files and vials scattered across the floor. Red lights flashed, alarms screamed, but they did not stop.
Finally, the man fell back, panting. “Impossible,” he muttered. “How do you survive this?”
Lyra glared. “Because we fight for each other.”
Safe grabbed several containers, handing them to Lyra and Damien. “We take this. Then we leave. Now.”
They ran toward the exit as more guards arrived. Cole, Jack, Rowan, and Kade covered their escape. Bullets and energy blasts flew past, narrowly missing them.
Outside, the forest was dark but calm. They didn’t stop running until the lab was far behind them.
Lyra dropped to her knees, gasping for air. “We did it,” she whispered, though her body was shaking.
Damien crouched beside her, brushing hair from her face. “Not yet. We need to analyze this, see what they were making, who is behind it.”
Maya appeared from the treeline, breathing heavily. “All accounted for?”
“Yes,” Jack said. “Safe, you’re incredible.”
Safe smiled faintly. “This is only the beginning. They will retaliate.”
Lyra looked at the vials and files in her hands. “Then we prepare. We cannot let them win.”
Cole nodded. “The more we know, the better we fight.”
Damien’s hand found Lyra’s. “Together,” he said quietly.
Lyra squeezed his hand back. “Always.”
The group set up camp for the night, staying hidden in the forest near the safe house. The stolen files and vials were carefully protected.
Lyra stared into the dark trees, her mind racing. They had survived Skye, they had the new shapeshifter ally, and they had struck a blow against the lab.
But she knew it was not over.
Somewhere out there, more enemies waited. Stronger enemies. The Architects would not let their plans fail.
And she had a feeling the next attack would be worse than anything they had faced before.
As the group slept fitfully, a shadow moved silently through the trees, observing. Two glowing eyes reflected in the darkness. A soft, chilling voice whispered, “They think they have won. They have no idea what comes next.”
