Chapter 138 Is She Specifically Waiting for Him to Come Home?
"Mr. Green, everything lately has been really important."
Rhys gently reminded him.
Although Charles wasn't too happy about it, he understood that work was the most important thing.
Without his identity as Charles, without his position as president of the Green Group, he'd probably be tied up in many things, unable to get anything done.
Keeping Olivia company was important, sure, but if he couldn't hold onto everything he had now, Olivia would leave faster than anyone.
"I got it."
He met with important business partners, handled several key matters, and attended a business dinner.
By the time everything was done, it was already eleven at night.
Charles sat in the car, tiredly pinching the bridge of his nose.
He took out his phone, planning to call the servants at Serenity Estates to ask if Olivia had gone to sleep yet.
He actually wanted to call Olivia more, to hear her voice and ease his exhaustion.
But he was worried about waking her up.
Just as he was about to press the last number, Rhys's phone rang, and Charles had to give up.
After taking the call, Rhys turned around with a serious expression: "Mr. Green, there's news about Aurelia."
Charles's eyes sharpened.
Rhys drove the car into a residential area. Soon, the person he had sent to watch Aurelia hurried over and handed a document envelope to Rhys.
Rhys briefly checked what was inside to make sure there was nothing dangerous, then passed the envelope to Charles.
"Aurelia is clearly on guard against us. After getting your fingerprints, she didn't make any moves for a long time, as if nothing had happened."
"This document was meant for a retired detective who's Philip's best friend."
"Our people have been watching Aurelia. She didn't visit this retired detective directly. Instead, using the excuse of visiting a friend, she hid the document in a milk box and gave the milk box to one of her friends. Her friend took this box of milk, along with other gifts, to visit that retired detective."
"If our people hadn't been careful enough, this document would have ended up in that retired detective's hands."
While briefly explaining what happened, Rhys felt waves of fear.
Aurelia had been too careful. If he hadn't specifically told his people not to overlook anything, if they hadn't done more careful work before and understood that things could be passed along through multiple hands...
The person coming to see them right now probably wouldn't be his own people, but the police.
After hearing all this, Charles's expression grew serious too:
"Your people doing these things, they weren't discovered, right?"
"No. The people I sent are elite, careful enough in their work." Rhys answered. "But just to be safe, we should take some things out and put some other things in."
That way, when they met or called to verify things later, nothing would seem off.
"Okay."
Charles briefly looked at the contents of the envelope.
There wasn't much, just the fingerprints he had once left for Aurelia.
If this document hadn't fallen into their hands, if it had fallen into anyone else's hands, they probably wouldn't even recognize what it was and would just treat it as trash.
Charles pulled out a cigarette and lit it. After taking a few drags, he held the paper with his fingerprints to the cigarette end.
The ember at the end of the cigarette met the paper, which immediately started burning.
Charles smoked while watching the paper with his fingerprints turn to ash before his eyes.
"Just stamp some random fingerprints on it, then put the stuff back, and keep people watching that retired detective to see who else he contacts."
"Yes."
Rhys moved quickly. He took out a piece of paper and an ink pad from the glove compartment, stamped several of his own fingerprints on it, put the paper in the envelope, and called his person to come get it and send it out.
Charles finished his cigarette and continued giving instructions:
"Keep an eye on Aurelia. Unless something important happens, don't just show up. And regarding Olivia's parents," Charles stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray, "tell the people there to be respectful to Olivia's parents, don't disturb their lives casually."
"If there's anything we can help with, we can quietly lend a hand."
Charles continued instructing.
Maybe this one instruction would earn him a good impression with Quincy and Theodora in the future.
He knew clearly that there couldn't be any good outcome between him and Olivia.
The best outcome would be going their separate ways, as if neither had appeared in the other's life.
But he still vaguely hoped, hoped that he could appear before Quincy and Theodora as a future son-in-law.
Hoped that perhaps there really would be a day when he and Olivia could be an ordinary married couple.
Charles had given these instructions before, but hearing him repeat them now, Rhys became even more careful about matters concerning Olivia.
Thinking back to when they left Serenity Estates and Charles had wanted to compress his work schedule, Rhys increasingly felt that Charles was placing greater and greater importance on Olivia.
And he increasingly felt this wasn't a good thing.
Someone with Olivia's personality could never be content being Charles's mistress forever.
She was like a ticking time bomb, currently just hiding her explosive power, but who knows when she might explode.
Blowing Charles and everyone around him to pieces.
He wanted to warn Charles about something, but, remembering his repeated warnings before, he swallowed the words on his lips.
Right now, Charles was excited about Olivia, and no matter what he said, Charles wouldn't listen.
Better to leave it for now.
Maybe after a while, once Olivia had been docile for long enough, Charles would get tired of her.
Even if Charles didn't get tired of her anytime soon, as Charles's assistant and Robert's best friend, he just needed to stay more alert.
The luxury car drove back to Serenity Estates. As soon as Charles got out, he looked toward the second-floor bedroom window.
The window was completely dark now. Olivia must be asleep already.
He took a shower in the bathroom off the living room, then tiptoed to push open the bedroom door, planning to get into bed and hold Olivia in his arms for a good night's sleep.
But the moment his body touched the edge of the bed, Olivia, who was lying there, turned over and opened her eyes to ask him:
"You're back?"
Charles froze for a moment.
He instinctively apologized, thinking he had woken Olivia up when he came back.
Seeing her eyes completely clear without a trace of sleepiness, a thought suddenly came to his mind:
Could she have been waiting up for him to come home?
