Chapter 202
Chapter 202
THIRD PERSON POV
“Do you think he’ll be able to pull it off?”Lief bit his lips as he watched Dimitris and Ryker. Ryker’s jawline clenched, and silence stretched.
“I don’t trust him. But, I guess in his sick way, he would do this to atone for whatever is left of his miserable life,” Ryker growled in annoyance and continued studying Varkas’ history. The power he had accumulated was well documented. One thing he saw was that Varkas was very detailed, and his nonchalance had been just a farce. They had gone through the files Lief presented and had understood the depth of Varkas’ long quest for power. The only reason why he had not claimed the throne was that he had been obsessed with the power of immortality, possessed by Lyra.
“I can’t believe he stayed by my side all this time as a loyal beta. To think that he had been after my child, too,” Dimitri hissed. The steel cup he held smashed into an abnormal shape.
“So, what happens if Alpha Declan doesn’t succeed?” Lief frowned, and Ryker looked ahead.
“Whether he succeeds or not, I will not wait a moment longer to bring back my mate before that creep does something to her.” As soon as Ryker said that, Lief looked down guiltily. He had purposely not shown Ryker the folder that contained Lyra’s private moments for fear of his losing his mind.
Ryker’s jaw tensed, and his eyes narrowed. His gaze flickered to the hidden folder in a section. He had purposely avoided that file. When Lief mentioned private moments, he had willed every part of him that was sane to focus on the other issues that would give him an idea of where she was. There was no denying that that bastard coveted his mate. To think that he was her uncle, some over eight hundred-year-old fucking Lycan.
However, now that the plan involved using magic and was hinged on Declan’s success so that their rescue mission could be as swift as possible, he couldn’t help but want to look at what was in there.
And so he moved the cursor. He felt Lief tense beside him. Then he clicked.
As soon as the image was displayed on the screen, he froze. Then, as though crazed, he kept clicking, and there were images, mostly of Lyra naked, in the bathroom, wearing those thin robes of hers that made it impossible for him to stop craving being inside her whenever she was around him. Blood rushed to Ryker's head, fast and hot, and he saw red.
“THAT BASTARD!!! I WILL FUCKING KILL HIM!!!” He roared and stood up. The force of his movement crashed the chair behind him loudly.
Dimitri’s eyes went to the screen, and Lief closed the screen quickly.
“Ryker, please don’t do anything you will regret.” He pleaded as he ran after Ryker, who was already unlocking the safe room door. Dimitri was also behind him.
“He’s been watching her. The whole time.” Ryker spun. His chest behaved. “Tell me. If it were your mate, would you be calm?”
Lief released a shaky breath and sighed. “I understand you perfectly, Ryker. This is unacceptable, and he will pay dearly for it. But you can’t confront him now. He must not know we are on to him.”
“Lief is right. Quickly, can you install a camera in his room without it being detected? I will summon him over, giving you enough time to do what you need to do. I want to observe him for the next few days before we go ahead with the plan.” Dimitri spoke and pressed a hand to Ryker’s shoulder to calm him.
“And Declan? Is he part of us now?” Lief asked.
“No,” Ryker interjected. “He is loyal to his greed. He doesn’t need to know anything. Let him prove whatever he must. That’s his concern.”
The room descended into silence, and shortly after, Declan came through a portal. His face was deathly pale as he stretched forward his hand and dropped a strand of hair on the table.
“That should be enough, I presume?” Declan asked. His voice was raspy as he struggled to breathe.
Dimitri’s gaze moved slowly from the hair to Declan’s face.
Then he stood up and shifted one of his fingers into a claw and dug into his flesh and poured out some of his blood into a cup. All the while maintaining eye contact with Declan. Then he brought the cup to Declan’s lips.
“Drink,” He ordered. “What comes next is going to hurt.”
Back in the room where Lyra was, throughout the day, she had remained in the darkness. As soon as Stephan dropped her dinner, she wasted no time. She hurriedly drank the water, left the food untouched, and counted her breaths before she made her move. She wasn’t strong enough, but after what happened the night before, she could not afford to find herself helpless against Varkas when he claimed her.
She remembered the last words he spoke.
You can call me your King, since you are my Queen. Or perhaps when I spread your legs and fuck you under the next full moon, you can call me uncle.
He was her uncle. But if she had an uncle, wouldn’t her father have told her? There was so much she didn’t know, and she needed answers, but first she had to escape this place. The farther she got into the darkness, the more she called on Liora.
Liora. If you can hear me. Get us out of here. Our pup s in danger.
Lyra tried to picture Ryker’s room. That was her safe place, but after a few minutes, nothing happened; she panicked and opened her eyes.
She pressed a hand against her belly and tried again. As she tried to coax Liora.
I know you are weak from the moon crystal. But we need to get out of here, now and fast. Please
After what seemed to be a few seconds of no response from Liora, Lyra gave up and decided to do this on her own. Liora had enough on her plate. It was up to her to get them out of here safely. Just as she took a step farther into the darkness, she had a faint whisper. It was so faint she almost missed it.
Liora replied, “Okay.”
