Chapter 48 48

Chapter 48 48

Lucy took a shaky breath.

"Do you think... Will we be okay? After all this?"

Anna hesitated. "We will. One day. But right now... we have to be careful. We are tied to dangerous people and the biggest mistake you want to make is to think that you can trust them in any way. And I don't trust Domenico. I know he has brought us together but if the time to sacrifice us comes, I assure you he won't waste a second before doing it. He will kill you if he has to. I don't even want to talk about the other one. What's his name, Blaze? He's a monster and you must stay out of his way as much as you can. He wanted to kill me. He had men strap me to a chair and nearly had them kill me."

Lucy's chest tightened with fear. Hearing what her mother had just gone through made her heart skip so.

She could only imagine the horrors that the woman had gone through back there at the mansion.

"I'm so sorry. He feels the same way about me too. He wanted to kill me but Domenico stopped him every time that he tried to. And all this started because of something that wasn't even my fault. One of his mistresses gave me something to deliver and Domenico saw me. Since then he has always done everything to make my life hell. He is always looking for ways to make my life hell. But he's not the only one. His mistress was the one who gave me all these scars. She nearly killed me. I'm scared of her. Every time I close my eyes, I can't get her face out of my head. Sometimes I see her in my dreams. The way she looks at me like she wants to kill me. Like she wants me gone."

Anna pulled her into a gentle, tight hug. "I won't let anyone hurt you again."

Lucy buried her face in her mother's shoulder, shaking. "I don't want to go back there." Anna closed her eyes. "I know. But Domenico said you'll be protected. And... we don't have a choice right now. Not until this is over. Just stay close to him as much as you can but you can never trust him with your life. He might promise you everything you can think of, but don't you ever assume for a second that he likes you because he doesn't and he never will. We don't have any choice until this is over."

Lucy nodded into her shoulder, even though her stomach twisted painfully.

The next morning, doctors came in with paperwork. Nurses helped her sit up and helped take her IV off, before helping her change into new clothes.

Her legs were shaky because it was the first time she'd stood up in years. Her mother held her hand the whole time. When they stepped outside into the bright day, two black SUVs were waiting.

Domenico had sent men. They opened the door for Lucy and her mother, treating them with respect and care. During the drive, Lucy's hands wouldn't stop trembling. Her mother noticed and squeezed them softly.

"It's okay," Anna whispered. "We're together."

Lucy nodded but didn't feel steady. Not yet. When they arrived at the Stone mansion, that feeling of drew slipped into her stomach again.

Two maids were standing there at the door, waiting. They gave polite smiles.

"Miss Lucy, Miss Anna... your room has been prepared."

They followed the maids inside. Everything inside the house fell too intimidating, too big and too quiet.

Every turn they made had her skin prickling with nervousness because she was always expecting some sort of danger to show up.

The thought of running into Nicole reminded her of the things she'd faced. The maids led them upstairs and opened the door to a new guest room.

She was surprised they were being treated this way but she knew that Domenico was the one who'd asked them to treat them this way.

The room was the opposite of everything about the room she'd been in before she was admitted to the hospital. It was warm and beautiful, soft cream walls, two beds and a light pouring in through the tall windows. Anna smiled softly.

"It's nice, Lucy." But Lucy didn't step inside immediately.

Her eyes darted around the hallway... checking shadows... checking corners... checking for her. Nicole. The thought of her had her nerves pricking up.

Her hands grew cold again.

"It's okay," Anna whispered. "You're safe."

Lucy swallowed hard. "I... I know. I'm just..."

Scared. Still scared.

Still hearing Nicole's voice in the back of her head. Still seeing her face. Lucy stepped into the room slowly, her heart hammering so loudly.

"You're what?" Her mother asked, worried by her daughter's expression.

She'd never seen Lucy look this scared for anybody. And that alone told her that whatever had been done to her daughter was so bad.

She couldn't wait to find out who this Nicole was and take revenge for what she had done to her daughter, but the thought was immediately snuffed out the moment she remembered Blaze would have ended her life back at the warehouse.

For Lucy, the house may have looked beautiful.

And maybe it was safer now because of the orders that Domenico might have given, but it still didn't cancel out the fact that the danger was still lurking around. Nicole was untouchable and could do whatever she wanted.

She couldn't go against her in any way. The only way out was escaping this damned mansion but that was too risky. However, it was the only option out of this hellhole.

And she was willing to take that risk. Because one thing was certain, Nicole wasn't finished with her. And she knew would do anything to make sure she was dealt with.

She couldn't risk that, especially with her mother around. One thing was sure, things were about to get real messy.
