Chapter 47 47

Chapter 47 47

Lucy's mother had barely left her side ever since she came to the hospital.

Three days later, she was still sitting at the edge of her daughter's bed, her face tired but the last thing she wanted to do was leaving her daughter's side.

She knew Lucy needed every help she could get, whether physical or emotional. She held her hands gently, running her thumb across her daughter's knuckles like she used to when ugly things like this related their ugly head up.

For a long moment, neither said anything. But the silence wasn't awkward in any say. It was full. That's when Anna sighed softly.

"I need to tell you something," she said in a low, heavy voice.

Lucy looked up at her with worried eyes. She always knew what came next whenever her mother sounded that way.

She only sounded like that when she'd been bottling up a lot inside her heart and wanted to let it out.

"Mom... what is it?" She asked.

Anna swallowed as if the words had formed a large lump inside her throat. "What I went through in that mansion. What they did to me. I... I didn't tell you everything."

Lucy felt her stomach twist. "Mom, you didn't have to hide-"

"I did," Anna cut in, shaking her head. "I had to. You deserve to know. You've already been dragged into this mess and I think you've not heard enough to know the truth."

Lucy nodded, flashing a ghost of a smile as she tightened her grip on her mother's hands.

"Okay." Anna exhaled, staring at the wall for a second as if pulling the memories out from somewhere deep and dark. "When those men grabbed me...when they threw me in that room at the mansion, I thought I was going to die."

Her voice cracked. "Lucy, I've never been so scared in my entire life."

Lucy's eyes burned now. "Mom..."

"They made me stay in the room for hours," she continued slowly. "No food. No water. It was just me and the crippling fear that they might come in there and kill me. And the head maid there. She looked at me like I was dirt. Like I was some kind of problem that needed to be erased."

Lucy felt her own breath catch. "Did she hurt you?"

Anna hesitated and then nodded. "Yes. A lot. I've never felt more humiliated in my entire life. I didn't face that even from the rude customers when I was working at the shopping mall. And she didn't just make me feel miserable with her hands. She used her words too. She threatened me. She'd tell me she could make me disappear and nobody would ever find me. She told me I would suffer if I didn't do what she wanted. It was hell."

The words had the wars running down Lucy's cheeks instantly because it reminded her of Nicole.

"Why.. Why are they all like that? I faced the same issue. That's what put me in this situation."

"It's because they are all rotten," her mother whispered. "Rotten in a way that goes deep. All these people care about is putting gear in people. They always want control. And want to make sure that you would keep quiet no matter what. Sadly, that's all we have to do because the moment you open your mouth to rebel you'd be dead."

Lucy couldn't stop the tears that were rolling down her cheeks now. I'm so sorry, Mom. I'm sorry you went through that because of me."

Anna grabbed her face gently. "No. Listen to me. Don't say sorry.none of this is your fault, do you hear me?"

Lucy nodded weakly but her heart still felt like it was breaking into pieces.

Anna's voice softened when. She spoke up again. "Your father... he did this to us. All of it. His gambling problems and his debt issued. I always warned him but he never listened to me. Look what this has brought us. Eternal strife and suffering unless something happens and we get out of this. But even if we are, I don't think we are getting out anytime soon. There are many things and many people here that could kill us. Sometimes I think about him despite knowing there is nothing I can do or say to change the stupid mistakes your father made. I warned him about the people he crossed. I hate him, Lucy. So much. I have always tried not to because he was my husband but now I just see what piece of trash he is. I tried to keep peace. But how could I forgive a man who put his own family in danger and abandoned them. What kind of man does that?"

Lucy whispered. "I know."

"Everything that happened to you... everything that happened to me... it's because of him."

Anna wiped her face. "I stayed for too long. I kept hoping that he was going to change but instead he dragged us into a world this cruel and unforgiving. And not just that, he left us. Now we are suffering for things we know nothing about."

She looked down at her hands. "So stop blaming yourself. You are fond of that and I hate when you do it, especially when you're not the one at fault."

"Don't," Lucy said quickly. "Please don't."

Anna brushed her daughter’s hair back gently. "Lucy I thought I had lost you. You have no idea how many times I've broken down in tears because I thought everything I've done in my life went up in flames the moment your father decided to start engaging in shady, dangerous deals."

Lucy leaned into her mother's touch. "I'm still here, Mom."

"I know," Anka whispered. "And that's the only thing keeping me sane right now. But I hope they find your father and make him pay for everything he did. Right now I understand just how much I hated him all those years. I- I don't even know why I stuck by him, letting him force his shit down my throat every damn time. Gosh, I was stupid..."

Unknown to her, Blaze was standing just outside the door, listening.
