Chapter 14
Oh My God, She Was Gorgeous and exasperating. Beautifully exasperating. Silva was correct, though, in that the patient was barely awake after surgery and heavily doped up. She was only able to muster a sad chuckle at Darien’s expense.
After tightening her hold on the bed’s bar, Darien let go and marched out of the room. He motioned to talk to his uncle when he saw him interrogating some other people.
“Darien, what’s going on?”
Check out Larissa’s bedroom. Given that she was moving in that direction when the shooter shot her, she must have been a guest at the Hastings Bed & Breakfast. Bring me the letter if she received one from Lelandi.
No warrants were required because pack laws applied.
“Then, gather her belongings. After she exits the hospital, she will be staying with me. But until then, I’ll accompany you nonetheless.
“You’re not going to fall for one of them again, are you?” The furious condemnation in Uncle Sheridan’s voice as they left the hospital was audible.
Darien humorously rejected his remark. This time, not. Hell, I don’t even like ladies who pursue me.
Uncle Sheridan raised an eyebrow. It’s fortunate that she is naive. He arched a dark brow, but his demeanor remained contemptuous.
Darien had no intentions of dating the woman!
Mrs. Bertha Hastings, dressed in one of her brighter flowery gowns, hurried to meet them when they arrived at the Queen Anne Victorian bed and breakfast. No of the season, she wore floral patterns all the time. She said that she had formerly been a garden fairy to anybody who would listen. Even now, the check-in desk and lobby were adorned with floral arrangements, ivies dangled from plant stands, and small ficus trees nestled next to the large windows, leaning toward the sun, giving the impression that she had transported the vast outdoors inside.
Is the young woman going to be okay? They were given the key to room 5 by Mrs. Hastings.
Darien couldn’t answer before she shook her head. “I see now that I should have informed you as soon as she came. She wasn’t immediately apparent to me as being Lelandi’s sister. But, I managed to catch her without the hat and spectacles, at which point, despite the remainder of the disguise, I could clearly see the similarity. Oh, and of course her voice. Same charming tone What’s her condition?
Darien breathed out loud. “She should be well after a few days.”
“Good. Inform her I have her room reserved for her.
As soon as he located her pack and they came for her, he was going to inform her that Larissa was permanently leaving this place. Uncle Sheridan, however, got there first.
“After she’s feeling better, she’ll be returning to her pack at home.”
The corners of Mrs. Hastings’ mouth drooped. She hastened to remove the dead mums from a vase. Sorry to hear that. I had hoped. She gave Darien a cursory glance but said nothing more.
He would choose Larissa as his partner? He gave a headshake. “Has anyone arrived here in search of her?” Sheriff Trevor has already enquired. She was approached by a man behind the house. When he grabbed her arm, I was ready to ring for help on my phone, but she released herself by swinging her arm downward and around. She kicked up her knee as if she were attempting to injure him where you know. It had a kung fu or similar appearance. In any case, he jumped back before starting to sing in soprano, and that put an end to the argument. She went to the tavern to see you as he strode off in the direction of Mervin’s barbershop. She wondered where you would be on a Friday night, or so I assumed.
Uncle Sheridan responded with a mocking snort, and his face showed it. Darien, I’m following you like you said. He reached for his notebook. “Can you describe the man’s appearance?”
“Lanky, maybe five eight or so. He was dressed in pants, a coat of copper hue, and trekking guidebooks. He had his hood up to conceal his face. She made a shrug. Couldn’t see very far.
Coat of copper? That ought should be simple to identify. Darien believed they may have had a lead at last.
Since the event in the backyard, I haven’t seen the guy again. Furthermore, I don’t remember ever seeing him before. She groaned.
You think Larissa knew him, right? Darien enquired. “Yeah. She squealed as I was repotting flowers in the backyard shed. When I peaked out the window, I observed him approach her and overheard them arguing. So I assumed that they were acquainted.
“One of her reds.”
“I assumed as much. You know, this girl is just a little bit sweeter than her sister. The smiling Mrs. Hastings. “Spirited. At heart, I’m more of a tigress. This one requires caution. Although she resembles her sister, she is not the same. She seems to be followed by danger.
If that wasn’t the day’s biggest understatement. Did Trevor look into her room?
“No. All he did was talk to one of the twin girls living here. When I asked him if he wanted to look through Lelandi’s sister’s room, he said that he had more important things to accomplish and that he would come back later. Since then, he hasn’t returned, and that was a few hours ago.
In his breath, Uncle Sheridan cursed. Darien intended to ask his uncle to find out what Trevor’s issue was, but the stern expression on his uncle’s face cautioned him not to.
“If you can recall anything else, please let us know.” “You bet, man.” She filled a pitcher with water. Is she delaying her departure at all?
Until she is healthy enough to travel, no.
“Good.” She grinned at him sweetly before returning to watering her plants.
Moving down the hallway was Darien and his uncle.
So what are your thoughts? Query from Uncle Sheridan. She is undoubtedly receiving criticism from a pack member for trespassing into another pack’s territory without authorization and getting herself into trouble. Perhaps boyfriend I don’t think it’s the brother she described since Larissa would have come instead of him if he thought Lelandi had been killed.
Unless he is her brother and denies Lelandi’s murder, of course.
