171. Not a Witch for Long

Cora

“Max come and get breakfast.” Max ran over sitting down in the car. “Your dad did you get him up?” Max nodded eating some of his bacon. “And how about John is he up?” Max shook his head. I nodded. Jax came over giving me a kiss on the cheek. “My God, Jax you smell like the brewery.” He sniffed himself and shrugged. “Max, don’t ever be that gross.” Max laughed. Jax pulled me to him. “I am not that bad, am I?” I smiled of course he wasn’t I looked at him and gave him a shrug and wink. “You should get ready though for the day remember we have stuff to do. I am doing some home schooling with Max.” Who sighed. “Max come on it is like 10 books it will ten 10 minutes, then we can do other magic.” I told him and he went back to his bacon and returned talking to Jax.

“Yeah anyways, magic you know and maybe introduce him to some of the pack.” Max heard and turned to look at the two of us. “We have other werewolves here?” He asked. I gave him a grin and shook my head. “We have other witches here.” I said trying to sound jovial, but he frowned. What was that about. Jax looked at me, I knew he felt my dissatisfaction in the fact my son showed little interest in something I was so excited about. “They are really cool.” I told Max and he looked at me. “Mom, no one is better than you at magic, they are just plain people to me.”

I didn’t know what to make of that. I got down near him. “Max all magic even small amounts of it are amazing.” He didn’t respond and ate some of the toast with Nutella on it. I ran my hands through his white hair when I noticed something. I leaned in to see and turned to Jax. He came over and looked. “What is it? What is wrong with my hair?” Max asked. “There is some turning brown.” Jax said. My heart sank. I knew what this was. He wouldn’t keep being a witch. I was one and had no werewolf in me, but Max his body was choosing to be a werewolf. Soon he would have no witch left. “I think we should do something else besides magic today.” I said to Max.

I felt my eyes starting to water. “I um forgot something upstairs I will be right back.” I quickly exited rushing up to my workroom and shutting the door. I slumped against it. I know I should be happy that Max is alive and well. That he is healthy and happy. I just felt sad. Like I would always be the odd one out. I knew me acting like this and having these feelings was beyond selfish. I sniffled and wiped my face. Max didn’t need any pressure I put on him. He was five years old for goodness's sake. I thought of my mother.

Did she go through something like this with me. I doubted it she had suppressed all my magic so I couldn’t shift if that had been possible, nor could I do magic until after she died. There was no reason for me to be this upset. I just needed to make sure I was a mom and there for him. I let out a few breaths when Jax knocked and pushed the door open. “Cora babe what is going on?” He asked. I looked at him. “Max is not going to be a witch forever; he will be a full werewolf, with no magic.”

“That doesn’t make sense, he has magic now?” I nodded and spoke. “He does but he is struggling with it, I can see it on his face and in the beginning, he was doing well but it is like the longer he is shifted into his wolf form, Snow, the less he can use magic. His hair is becoming like yours; he will be a werewolf not a witch.” I said and looked away; I knew I was being pathetic. Jax started looking around like he was avoiding my eye contact. Then he just blurted it out. “He is going to live forever unless something happens of course, and he dies.” Then he shut his mouth and stared at me.

“What?” “Look Kronos talked to me, said I should have you unbreak our bond so you could live forever, and that Max would always have you. He said Max being of both witch and werewolf blood he would be immortal.” My jaw fell open, a Eurika moment. “Jax, Hecate is never going to call the gods to fight us that is the least of our worries.” He now looked confused. “Don’t you see I am bonded to you so when you die, I die, so all my power and all of that stuff will be gone too. Hecate has nothing to worry about because in what 70-80 years we will be gone. That is a blink of an eye to the gods.”

“Cora what does this have to do with Max?” I smiled. “He is going to be a wolf, Kronos was wrong. Once Max is fully a werewolf, he won’t have both werewolf and witch blood in his system.” Jax looked so confused. “Don’t worry about what the titan said he was wrong; they are able to be wrong Jax.” I felt better, of course I did. I knew now I didn’t need to worry about the gods falling from the sky to smite us for only being products of their own offsprings. We are all bastards in one way or another, I thought.

“What are you going to do since he won’t be learning magic then?” Jax asked and I smiled. “I am sending him to school at some point once his hair is all the way brown like yours.” I straightened my spine and walked back downstairs. “Max lets blow off training today.” His eyes got big. “What are we going to do?” He asked. “We are going to look at what I made yesterday and then I am going to let you pick something fun and then after lunch your dad is going to do wolfy stuff with you. How does that sound?” He smiled and leapt at me. I caught my five-year-old. “No school?” He asked "Nope” He squeezed me tightly hugging me. “You are the best mom ever.” I hugged him back feeling like I was in a good place.

We left the house, and I showed him the houses. Max wanted to go into each one of them. Lia came up out of her bus. Her long pink hair was up in an oversized bun. “You must be Max.” He nodded. “Your mom told me you can do magic and can be a wolf. That is seriously cool. I am Lia.” Max looked her up and down. “Why do you have pink hair?” He asked. “Pink is pretty and my favorite color, so I dye it pink. Do you like it?” Lia asked and Max nodded his little body leaned into mine.

“What are you guys up to today?” Lia asked. “My mom is showing me around and then said I get to pick after that.” All of us were just smiles, we started walking away when Max turned back to Lia. “Thank you so much for coming to the pack, I know Mom wishes she had some witch friends.” Lia gave both of us another smile and we kept walking. Grant and Garrett met Max and the three of them did some magic, but I knew it wouldn’t last. I knew at some point soon we would have to tell everyone that Max was no longer a witch. I would have to tell him that, when it happened, but for right now I planned to just have fun.
