160. You Did What?

Jax

Cora burst into my office. John had left a little while ago. My sensitive noes picked up a hint of gasoline. “Do humans know about your kind?” Cora asked. Why was she asking this, what happened and why the hell was the smell coming from her, she looked clean. “Jax do humans know about witches and werewolves?” She asked again. “There are some, I am sure I mentioned there used to be hunters out there for my kind, and well you know witch trials are littered throughout history, so yes there is some, but our existence is not well known. In all honesty your kind is more well known and documented than werewolves.”

Cora strutted out of the room without another word. I got up from my seat to follow her. She had moved fast and I heard her slamming the bedroom door upstairs. By the time I got to our room I heard the shower on in the bathroom. I opened the door. What was going on. “Cora what happened? Why did you smell like gasoline?” I asked, I could see here through the glass side of the shower as she stood under the water, and steam began to fill the bathroom.

“Where to start? I met that witch. You know the one who was looking for me, the one who hurt your brother, the one that found us at the expo, the one who was from The Circle.” I responded in a tone I hardly used “You did what?” Cora, I heard over the shower. “Oh yeah, I let him in my truck we had a talk, you know I listened to what he had to say.” “Again, you did what?” I said. “Yep, real peach, his name is Drake, and he is a snake. He has this stupid idea that we as witches should make peace with your kind, which you know sounds great. It is what we are in the process of creating now. But the snake he is conniving. He wants to make peace with the werewolves so you will wiling let us drink your blood with the promise that the witches won’t drain you dry. I told him I never wanted to talk again, and I wouldn’t be part of it, despite the fact he wanted me to see evidence of it working in a place in Africa. I told him he is lucky I didn’t kill him and kicked him out of the truck.”

I understood the want to talk to him, but where had she even found him? Also, why would Cora let him in her truck? I mean my mate never really had to be fearful of others, she was so powerful, she could kill a whole pack if she wanted to or city, maybe even take over the country if that was something she wanted. So I guess that is why she didn’t think to much of it letting him in her vehicle, but again where did she find him. Did Cora seek him out like she had the other witches? Was it because the titan told her to?

Cora went on. “Oh, and then I go to the library you know the big one in Asheville. I go there and I am doing my thing, books on books. Then this 11year old girl comes up to me, i think she was 11 at least. I tell her I am thinking on the books. What else was I supposed to say. Anyways her father shows up and gives me dirty looks and takes his daughter away. Only to confront me as I am leaving. Telling me I am a witch and a follower of the devil or some shit. I thought it was hilarious that he was so ignorant. His friend pops up from nowhere throws gasoline on me and got a match out. The shit head was going to burn me alive like the dark ages. I got him on the ground and the other guy ran away. I threatened him and came home.”

Holly fuck, that is horrible, no wonder she was in a bad mood. I guessed she cleaned herself, but I could smell a bit of the gas on her still, that was why she was in the shower scrubbing her body with jasmine scented soap. “Can nothing be easy. Like why the hell is our life always a shit show. I thought things would get better after I was healed, but no life continues on, and it is hard. I am so tired of this crap. Like okay I am a witch you don’t have to hate me for something I was born with.” I felt for Cora I had not really ever thought about it. I knew my kind and her kind had a long-standing hatred and fear of one another but witches through all of time have been hunted and burned.

Sure, us werewolves had hunters after us but the witches, they have been hunted by werewolves, hunters, and humans. There was no wonder in my mind now that their numbers were so few now. At one point us werewolves had small numbers, but we had a large population currently. I had been surprised that there even was a coven when Cora told me of the Circle. That is how few there were. “Cora that really sucks, but I kind of need to ask this question. Do you think there is more people who would want you dead because you are a witch I mean humans?”

Cora didn’t answer for a long time. “How the hell should I know? All I know is if they try to set me on fire again, I will root them all out and kill them. I will not be burned alive, nope it ais not happening. When the other witches get here, I am going to talk to them about this. But for the rest of the day, I am going to be on my computer. Tomorrow, you can tell me how it went with John. It has been too long of a day to listen to an update. Between clearing trees, helping Max with the barn when he needed help, the library and those idiots, I just want to spend time on my laptop.”

I understood where she was coming from. Personally, I think her being sprayed by gasoline was probably the reason Cora wanted to just be alone. I would be too that is just hateful and horrific. I knew she was feeling extrem rage over what had happened. She just told me if they did something like that again to her she would kill them all. I can’t say I blame her, but I also knew Cora would not go out looking to find them again. I doubted she would avoid the library either. Cora really never had to fear for her saftey. What she feared was that Max or I would be hurt. Max because he was so young and me because I had no magic.

Cora could stop a bullet I couldn’t do that. She could blast fire, hell she taught our son to do that. But I could only shift into a wolf, granted I had heightened senses and extream strength but no magic. Cora had never voiced her concerns that I couldn’t defend myself, but I knew she felt that way.

“Jax, I love you, but can I please be alone, I just want some space please.” She said turning off the shower. “Yeah, I can do that.” “Thankyou” I left and went back downstairs. What a freaking day between what John and I discussed and now this. It was all just a lot. I would be meeting, well fighting, my brother in a month’s time. John had been the mediator of that conference call. The whole of Grey Crest would be there to watch. We had to set up a neutral spot. Whomever won would be picking what they land they wanted with the exception of the town of Hemmings. I made it clear to Tanner he could keep that, but I wanted the money that my properties would bring in when I sold them.

He had agreed to these terms. I didn’t know why considering he knew he would lose in a fight. We had also established it was not to the death, but the pack members were not discussed. I worried he would lock them all up to prevent them from leaving and coming to White Paw Pack, I hoped that was not the case. If Tanner does lock them up, they wouldn’t be able to even if they renounced him. I sighed sitting back down at my desk. I needed to study the map of the area. John had offered to help but this was something I could do, and we would go over it together later.
