Chapter 48
Chapter 48
Her body is finally starting to warm up, but her heart rate is strange. It has a strong heartbeat combined with a slightly softer beat to eat. It never sounded like that before. I try to listen more carefully with my wolf hearing when she starts to move in my arms. I lift my head to get a better look at her face. Her eyes start to flicker. She is about to wake up, so I gently climb out from the bed and walk around on the side where her face is lying. I kneel by the bed and take her hand in mine. She gives a slight moan. " Allie? " I call out her name softly because I don't want to startle her. She gives another soft moan.
" Allie. Can you hear me? I'm here my sweet Allie. " She puts her hands to her eyes and starts rubbing them. Like she wants to try and clear her sight to see better. She slowly opens her eyes " Jack? " She says my name and suddenly realizes that it is me.
" Jack, What in God's name! " She shouts out and jumps up from the bed over the other side of the bed. She walks a few steps backward until her back is pressed against the wall.
" What are you doing here? " Her eyes are wide open like saucers from the shock. I walk slowly around the bed.
" My sweet Allie. I have looked for you everywhere. Do you know how much I've missed you? I was so scared when I got the news that you were in the hospital. " She looks surprised.
"Who told you that I was in the hospital? " she asks with a high-pitched voice.
" The old woman, Martha! She called me and said that I should come quickly because you were in the hospital, so I got on a plane and got here as fast as I could." She frowns, and I can feel that she is starting to get angry. I have never seen her this way. She pushes off from the wall and walks one step towards me.
" I don't want you here. Just leave! " She shouts and I can tell that she means it.
" Allie, Please just listen to me. I know that you are angry about what you saw that night of the festival. But it isn't the way it seems. Nothing happened." She grunts and walks even closer to me.
" You think you had me fooled with all of that Mate crap and that Mates are only meant for each other, but think again. I should have known you are just the same as human men. They think they can have bread buttered on both sides. Did you think I would not find out about you and that slut, Nickie! " She shouts and suddenly her hand that was pointing at me, drops and grabs ahold of her stomach and she screams. She fell to her knees. I run to her and bend over to pick her up. She screams from the pain.
" Allie. what is it? What is wrong? " I worried. She doesn't answer. The pain is too much to give me a response. My wolf howls. He wants to come out and comfort his Mate, but I hold him back. I reach for my phone in my pocket and call for a doctor, but the doctor will take twenty minutes to get here. I ran to the kitchen and put the kettle on to boil some water for Allie.
" For fuck sake! " the cattle are taking forever and Allie is in pain. When the kettle finally boiled, I poured it into an empty bottle and wrapped it with a towel so that Allie wouldn't burn her.
I am Back in the bedroom in a blink of an eye and I put the bottle gently on her stomach. " Here, this will help. " She lays back on the pillow and allows me to put the bottle on her stomach. I kneel to the side of the bed again and stroke with the palm of my hand on her forehead. She starts to relax and it looks like the heat from the bottle is helping with the pain. My heart Is breaking. I don't want to see her like this. I would do anything to take her pain as my own. I lay my head down on the bed next to her stomach. I close my eyes tight while still holding the bottle in place on her stomach. I notice a second heartbeat. It is faint, but I can hear it. I lift my head from the bed and turn my head to face the door. The doctor must be here. But it is impossible because he said it would take twenty minutes to get here. I listen carefully, but I don't hear footsteps entering the chalet. I turn around and look at Allie. The second heartbeat is coming from her. I remove the bottle from her stomach. I put my head gently on her stomach. " Jack. What are you doing? " She asks, but I block her voice out and listen more intensely to her stomach. " This can't be! " It hits me like a lightning bolt. I remember the words from the old witch when she read the cards to me. The last card never left my mind.
She is no longer one, but two hearts combined as one
That is what the third card meant all along! She didn't replace me with someone else. She didn't fall in love and give her heart away. She is pregnant. The shock hits my body in waves and I am unable to move. Why didn't she tell me about the pregnancy? " Jack? " Allie calls out my name, but I am unable to move my lips. This is all so unreal. I am going to be a father. Allie and I are going to have a baby. My wolf Is happy. He is going to be a father. He wags his tail uncontrollably. I have to fix things with Allie as soon as possible. I have to tell her what happened that night with Nickie. That Nickie framed me and that we have proof. I was just about to ask Allie about the pregnancy when the doctor arrived. I hear his car parking on the other side of the chalet.
" I will be back in a few moments. I'm just going to fetch the doctor. " She nods and leans back into the pillow with her head. She holds her stomach with one hand.
I met the doctor at the front door. It is the same doctor from the hospital. I lead him inside to the bedroom where Allie is in bed. The doctor asks me to wait outside and closes the door before I can protest. My blood starts to boil. My wolf wants to bite the doctor, but we know that he is only here to help. Luckily, I have super hearing, so I can hear what is going on inside.
" I thought I told you to stay in bed and not to move around. You have a very risky pregnancy and the chances that you will lose your baby is very high. So please, try to stay in bed for a couple of weeks like we discussed. I will give you some medicine to try and prevent that the baby doesn't come out. You are also very weak. It is not usual for a baby to drain you this much of your strength."
Hearing the doctor say that the chances are high that she might lose the baby, makes me feel so powerless. I promised to protect her, and now I can't even help her with the pain. The baby is draining her out. It is no wonder why she is so weak and pale. She has lost a lot of weight from the baby living off of her. Wolf babies take a lot of energy out of the mother because they need to eat a lot. Allie is only human. Her body isn't meant for a werewolf baby. I must find a way to help her provide for the baby and still be able to survive the pregnancy. otherwise, the baby will drain the life out of her. I mind-link Matt, asking him to go back to the old witch, Helga and have her make a potion for Allie. To help her get the strength to grow the baby inside of her. I was still busy mind-linking Matt when the doctor came out.
" You can see her now, but please. She can't handle any stress right now. Take it calmly with her. Make sure that she stays in bed for a couple of weeks. I don't think it is a good idea to move her to the hospital right now. The bumpy road would have huge consequences. I will check up on her once a week, but if there are any problem, don't hesitate to call me. I gave her something to rest, so she won't wake for a couple of hours." I smile and nod. I am so grateful that the doctor gave her something to rest.
" Thank you so much for all your help doctor. If I may ask? How is the baby? " The doctor looks down to the floor and sighs.
" I must say. The baby is very strong, but I'm afraid for the mother. She is very weak and if she moves a lot, the baby will come out and she will lose a lot of blood and she will not make it. " The doctor's words make me feel cold deep into my soul. I can't imagine a life without Allie. I will do anything I can to make sure she and the baby will be okay.
" Thank you for telling me doctor. I will do anything in my power to make sure that she stays in bed, even if I carry her to the bathroom so that she doesn't walk by herself. " The doctor smiles and puts his hand on my shoulder.
" I'm sure she is in safe hands with you."
