Chapter 59
I was in a great mood. I happened to be delivering some documents to Michael, and when I saw him working so seriously in his office, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Immediately after that, I noticed that Michael had suddenly left his desk.
I turned my head and found the man had already moved close to me.
"Nancy, what's making you so happy? Why don't you share it with me?"
Seeing how clingy he was becoming, my mood got even better.
How had I never noticed before that this man had such a clingy side?
When I told him about my plan to deal with John and Susan, Michael's gaze grew intense.
After I finished, I actually felt a bit regretful. Would Michael think I was too vicious?
The excitement in my heart slowly subsided and even sank.
Looking at Michael, I said hesitantly, "Michael, what's wrong? Don't tell me you think I'm too harsh?"
Michael poked my forehead with his finger. "Don't I already know about this? Besides, I've been annoyed with John and Susan for a long time. They deserve it!"
"Nancy, you're so capable - I'm proud of you! Even without me, you alone would never let anyone bully you!"
Michael's pride meant something different to me.
Thinking back to my past life, I actually wanted to say that I wasn't really that capable. After all, in my past life, I was deceived and bullied so badly.
Once the plan was set in motion, I couldn't even get through to Susan on the phone anymore.
Susan disappeared for a while. One of her friends somehow managed to find my contact information.
"Ms. Smith, can you really not reach Susan? This time she's really screwed us over. We gave her all our money, but now we can't withdraw any of it. What are we supposed to do?"
Out of respect for the Smith family and the Johnson family, the socialite who called me didn't say anything too harsh. She just kept going on and on about how wrong Susan was.
Of course, she also hinted that since Susan was my friend, if I could help, it would be best if I helped Susan get through this crisis.
I pursed my lips. "There's really nothing I can do. Susan's disappeared and I can't reach her either. Why don't you try someone else?"
I hung up, too lazy to deal with it.
Susan contacted me on her own the next day.
Since she was someone I had schemed against, I naturally wanted to see what situation Susan was in now.
Knowing that Susan was at home and that there were quite a few people waiting for her there, I didn't go directly. Instead, I parked my car at the entrance of the residential complex and waited for a while.
I only went in after most of the people inside had left.
As soon as I entered, I found that Susan's home had been practically ransacked. Many things had even been smashed.
Susan was sitting on the sofa, making a phone call, clearly furious.
"Didn't I already tell you? I'm in a tough spot, too. All you do is pressure me. John, are you even a man or not!"
The two of them argued on the phone for quite a while before I knocked on the door. Susan was startled when she saw me. Only after I came in did Susan say to me tearfully, "Nancy, I'm really done for this time!"
I quickly asked, "What happened? Whatever it is, we can talk it through slowly. Everything can be solved."
Susan looked at me, wanting to speak but hesitating.
"Susan, go ahead and tell me. I'm here!"
At my affected tone, Susan bit her lip before continuing, "It's like this - that project you introduced me to has major problems, you know? That company isn't even legitimate. They just took the money and ran. I really have no choice, that's why I'm coming to you. Can you lend me some money? At least enough to pay back my loans. Otherwise, those people will really kill me."
I frowned. "If that's the case, then you're really unlucky!"
"But about this matter... I'm afraid I can't help you!" I sighed.
Susan got a bit anxious. "How can you not help me? Your family has money; the Johnson family has money too. If you want to help me, you can ask your mom or ask Michael!"
I sighed again. "Susan, I'm just a rich heiress who only knows how to rely on my family. Michael and I just got engaged. If I ask him for money now, what will he think of me?"
Seeing that I wouldn't budge, Susan came up with another terrible idea. "Don't you have lots of jewelry and accessories? Why don't you sell those things and save me? Just this once. We're best friends. I've helped you so many times before. Can you really bear to see something happen to me?"
I was still hesitating. "But my family keeps track of all those things. Especially after you took so many before, they've been watching even more strictly. I..."
Seeing me refuse again and again, Susan suddenly looked at me with suspicion. "Nancy, you introduced this project to me. Did you know about this all along? Are you deliberately trying to harm me?"
I suddenly stepped back, looking at Susan in disbelief. "Susan, how can you think that? Is that really what you think of me? I never did anything like that!"
"When you were making money, you didn't say I was scheming against you. For you to say this, I really..."
As I spoke, I shook my head. Susan, seeing me say this, had already furrowed her brow.
She stared at me intently for a long time before saying, "I know, you're not that kind of person. But I really have no choice. Can you really just watch as people come after me for debts?"
"Nancy..." She tried to soften me up by acting cute, but that was destined to be impossible.
I reached out and gently brushed Susan's temple, then said, "As for money, I really can't help right now. You know that if I could help you, I definitely would. But that Simon I introduced you to before - I can talk to him. Out of respect for my family, maybe he can give you some extra time, and you can figure something else out?"
Seeing that I was adamant about not helping, Susan probably knew there was no point in saying more and could only nod.
"But Nancy, Simon's not the only one I owe money to. Can you help me figure something out for the others too?"
I nodded sincerely.
"Susan, don't worry. I consider you my good friend. How could I not care about you?" Holding Susan's hand, I said earnestly.
Susan finally seemed to relax. She sat on the sofa, her hand resting on her belly, lost in thought.
But I couldn't help sneering inwardly.
She had borrowed so much money - not much to me, but to her, it was something she could never pay back in this lifetime!
And asking for leniency? These were businesspeople - how could they possibly be lenient with her forever?
As I went downstairs, I sent Simon a message.
