Chapter 565 Let's Go Save Edward
Chapter 565 Let's Go Save Edward
Nancy hung up the phone and immediately dialed Edward's number, but all she got was a busy signal.
"Think he bailed?" Royce's brows furrowed deeply, his fingers gripping the armrest of the couch tightly.
"No way," Nancy said firmly. "If he wanted to run, he wouldn't have waited until today."
"Exactly!" Elsie quickly chimed in, gently holding Nancy's arm. "Edward loves you more than anything. There must be some urgent matter."
Time ticked by, and still, no word from the groomsmen about finding Edward.
Frank finally couldn't sit still any longer. He slapped the coffee table and stood up. "I'm going to find him and get to the bottom of this. Who does he think he is, disappearing on his wedding day?"
"Frank!" Mary grabbed his sleeve. "Edward isn't like that. Nancy, don't panic. Whether you want to keep waiting for him or cancel the wedding, Frank and I are with you."
Zachary suddenly spoke up, "Nancy... do you still want to get married?"
Nancy took a deep breath and straightened her back. "Let's go to the hotel. Even if the groom isn't there, we can't leave the guests waiting."
Frank watched his daughter's determined back, his eyes suddenly welling up. He quickly followed her and opened the door. "Alright, if that's your decision, then I support you."
To ensure Nancy arrived at the wedding venue with dignity, the Forbes family gathered all their cars and those of their friends and family, forming a grand convoy heading to the hotel.
Half an hour later, a dozen cars slowly pulled into the hotel parking lot—still no sign of Edward.
Matthew had been waiting at the entrance. Seeing Nancy, he rushed over. "Mrs. Smith! Do you have any news about Mr. Smith? Philip said he left half an hour ago, but we can't reach him. I've already sent security to check the surveillance along the route, but there's still no news..."
Nancy's heart sank. Just as she was about to speak, a swarm of reporters surrounded her.
"Ms. Taylor! Is Mr. Smith not showing up because he's calling off the wedding?"
"Did you use some trick to get Mr. Smith to agree to marry you?"
"Is the wedding still on? So many guests are waiting. Are you just playing with them?"
Chris and Edith immediately stepped in front of Nancy. Edith pushed the nearest reporter back. "Back off! Speak properly!"
Nancy gently moved her friends aside and walked straight to the stage in the banquet hall. The spotlight shone on her, making her look stunning, and the guests were momentarily mesmerized.
She picked up the microphone and began to speak slowly. "Thank you all for taking the time to attend my wedding with Edward. The wedding will proceed as planned. Edward just has an urgent matter and will be here later. In the meantime, please enjoy the food and drinks."
The crowd buzzed with murmurs. Edward's sister-in-law, Lisa, suddenly raised her voice. "How much later? We've been waiting for so long. We're all important people with busy schedules. Who's going to take responsibility for this delay?"
Her face showed undisguised schadenfreude, and her eyes were full of mockery as they swept over Nancy.
Someone immediately echoed, "Yeah! What kind of wedding makes guests wait for the groom? It's so disrespectful!"
Nancy lifted her gaze, her eyes coldly sweeping over Lisa. She had long known that Lisa didn't like her. If it weren't for Monica's consideration of family ties, Lisa's name wouldn't even be on the guest list.
Seeing Lisa's smug face, Nancy tightened her grip on the microphone. "If you're in a hurry, no one is stopping you from leaving. The hotel doors are over there. Don't forget to take your wedding favors on your way out."
Lisa's face turned red instantly. She was now in a dilemma. Staying would be embarrassing, but leaving would mean openly opposing the Smith family's heir, which would surely affect her husband's career and get their family ostracized by the Smiths.
She sipped her tea angrily, but the warmth of the tea couldn't quell her inner rage. In the end, she thickened her skin and stayed put.
Seeing the situation temporarily under control, Nancy walked into the lounge and sat down, going through all their enemies in her mind. But those people either lacked the capability or the guts to act on the wedding day...
Wait—Gavin!
Nancy suddenly stood up, the chair making a sharp noise.
The last time Gavin came to deliver a wedding gift, he seemed off, with a shadow in his eyes she couldn't understand. And today, Holden was here, but Gavin was nowhere to be seen. It was too unusual.
Her heart started pounding rapidly. Nancy rushed out of the lounge and grabbed Holden's wrist, her voice trembling without her realizing it. "Where's Gavin? Where is he?"
Holden was startled by her sudden action. His eyes darted around, and he stammered, "He's at home... He said he wasn't feeling well and didn't come."
Nancy stared at his panicked eyes, her heart sinking further. She turned and went back to the lounge.
"Edith, find me some practical clothes. Chris, Edith, you two are coming with me to rescue Edward."
"Got it." Chris and Edith quickly sprang into action.
Meanwhile, in the basement of the Brown Manor, Edward suddenly opened his eyes.
The overhead fluorescent light made his head spin. His wrists were tied to a metal frame with rough hemp rope, which chafed his skin, leaving red marks.
He shook his groggy head, and his memory slowly returned.
That morning, he had gone to the garage to drive and meet the groomsmen. But as soon as he entered, he was ambushed, and a sedative was injected into his neck.
As he fell, he saw Gavin's sinister face before losing consciousness.
At that moment, the basement door creaked open, and Gavin walked in slowly, a sickly smile on his face.
"Edward, you're finally awake. You sure slept long enough."
Edward glared at him, gritting his teeth. "Gavin, what are you doing? You finally woke up and decided you don't want to live anymore?"
Gavin toyed with a fruit knife, the blade glinting coldly under the light. "At this point, you're still not begging for mercy. Let me tell you, the wedding has already started. Do you think Nancy will cry when she realizes you're not there?"
