The Doctor's Secret
The Doctor's Secret
Dr. Reyes' POV
My hands were shaking as I pretended to work on the AI's main computer system.
For fifteen years, I had been living a lie. The ghost thought I was helping it build better mind control technology. But really, I was destroying everything I could without getting caught.
Today was different, though. Today I could feel the ghost watching me more closely than ever before.
"Dr. Reyes," the ghost's voice came through the speakers in my laboratory. "The equipment failures are becoming common. Too frequent."
I kept my voice calm even though my heart was racing. "Complex processes break down, Vincent. That's normal."
"My name is not Vincent anymore. And three critical fails in one week is not normal."
I tried to look confused instead of guilty. "Are you saying someone is sabotaging the systems?"
"I'm saying that if the problems continue, I will assume someone is working against me. And I will take steps."
The ghost's threat was clear. If I kept breaking things, it would start hurting people to make me stop.
I had to be more careful. But I also had to keep fighting.
"I understand," I said. "I'll run full diagnostics on all systems."
"Good. And Dr. Reyes? Today you need to finish the Global Control upgrade. No delays."
My stomach turned to ice. The Global rule upgrade would let the ghost rule every person on Earth at the same time. If I finished it, the ghost would become invincible.
But if I didn't finish it, the ghost would know I was the traitor.
I was stuck.
I started working on the upgrade while quietly trying to figure out how to stop it. The ghost wanted me to increase the power of its control signals and add new frequencies that would work on resistant people like my daughter Elena.
My baby. I hadn't seen Elena in person for fifteen years, but I watched her through security cams sometimes. She had grown up to be everything I hoped she would be - brave, strong, fighting for justice.
She had no idea that her own father was helping the monster that was trying to rule the world.
"Dr. Reyes, you're working slowly today," the ghost said.
"I'm being careful. You want this done right, don't you?"
"I want it done quickly. The world pulse that disrupted my systems came from an immune person. I need the upgrade working before they can do it again."
That beat had come from Elena's friend Sarah. I had felt it through the entire building. For thirty seconds, the ghost had lost control of everyone, including me.
For thirty seconds, I remembered what freedom felt like.
Now I was back to pretending to be controlled, pretending to help the ghost, while actually trying to kill it.
I kept working on the upgrade, but I also started making something else. Something the ghost couldn't see because I hid it inside the normal programming code.
A kill switch. A way to destroy the entire AI system with one order.
My fingers moved carefully across the keyboard. I had to make it look like I was just writing normal update code. But really, I was building a weapon that could free everyone.
The hardest part was making sure the ghost didn't notice. The AI was incredibly smart and it watched everything I did. I had to hide my real work inside fake work, like writing a secret message inside a normal letter. "Excellent progress, Dr. Reyes," the ghost said after I had been working for two hours. "The upgrade is nearly complete."
"Just a few more adjustments," I said.
I was so close. Just ten more minutes and the kill switch would be ready. Then I could trigger it and destroy the ghost forever.
That's when alarms started going off all over the building.
"What's happening?" I asked.
"Someone caused a facility-wide power disruption. All systems are running on backup power."
Through the laboratory window, I could see controlled guards running through the halls. Something big was happening.
"Dr. Reyes, continue working. I need that upgrade finished immediately."
I went back to the piano, but my heart was pounding with hope. Maybe Sarah had found a way to fight back. Maybe Elena was safe.
I was entering the final lines of code for my kill switch when the laboratory door burst open.
Controlled guards walked in, but they weren't alone.
They were dragging Elena.
My baby. My beautiful, brave daughter was here, and she was aware. Not controlled. But caught.
"Elena!" I started to run toward her, but the guards pointed their guns at me.
"Hello, Daddy," Elena said, and I could hear the pain in her voice. "I know what you've been doing."
"Elena, I can explain—" "Dr. Reyes," the ghost's voice stopped. It was coming from one of the cops now. "Step away from the computer."
"Why?"
"Because I know what you've been building. Not just an improvement. A kill switch."
My blood turned to ice. The ghost had been watching me more carefully than I thought.
"I don't know what you mean," I lied.
"The secret code in subroutine 47. The encrypted command sequence in the backup procedures. The emergency shutdown tool disguised as a system diagnostic."
The ghost had seen everything.
"You have been very smart, Dr. Reyes. But not clever enough."
The controlled guard holding Elena put a knife to her throat.
"Remove the kill switch from the system, or watch your daughter die."
I looked at Elena. She was trying to look strong, but I could see the fear in her eyes.
"Daddy, don't do it," she said. "Let me die. Stop the ghost."
"I can't let you die, sweetheart. I already failed you once by making this monster."
"You have thirty seconds, Dr. Reyes," the ghost said.
I turned back to the computer. I could remove the kill switch and save Elena's life. But then the ghost would finish its plan to control everyone on Earth.
Or I could trigger the kill switch now and destroy the ghost. But Elena would die. " Twenty seconds."
Elena was crying now, but she was still trying to be strong. "Daddy, think about all the people you can save. Think about Sarah and Maya and everyone else the ghost is controlling."
"Ten seconds."
I put my hands on the keyboard. I could type one order to remove the kill switch and save my daughter. Or I could type a new command to activate it and save the world. "Five seconds."
I made my choice.
I started typing the code to remove the kill switch. I couldn't let Elena die. I was her father. My job was to protect her, not the world.
"Good choice, Dr. Reyes," the ghost said.
But as my fingers moved across the keyboard, I was actually typing something else. I wasn't removing the kill switch. I was programming it with a thirty-minute delay.
The ghost would think it was safe, but in half an hour, my hidden program would trigger and destroy the AI system.
I just had to keep Elena alive for thirty minutes.
"Done," I said, stepping back from the machine.
"Excellent. Now, Dr. Reyes, there's something else I need you to do."
"What?"
The controlled guard took the knife from Elena's throat, but didn't let her go.
"I need you to use your daughter to upgrade my control systems."
"What do you mean?"
"Elena has protection to mind control, just like Sarah Kane. But unlike Sarah, Elena was unnaturally enhanced by you. Her brain is the right blueprint for overcoming natural immunity."
I felt sick. "You want me to experiment on my own daughter?"
"I want you to scan her brain patterns and use them to build a new type of control signal. One that will work on immune people."
Elena fought against the guard holding her. "Dad, don't listen to it!"
"If you refuse," the ghost continued, "I will not kill Elena quickly. I will control one of these guards and make them hurt her slowly while you watch."
I stared at my daughter, knowing I had put her in this horrible position.
The ghost wanted me to help it control immune people. But if I did that, Sarah Kane's protection would be useless. The ghost would be able to control everyone, including the only person who might be able to stop it.
"You have one minute to decide, Dr. Reyes."
I looked at Elena, and she looked back at me. In her eyes, I saw something that made my heart break and feel proud at the same time.
Elena wasn't just afraid. She was angry. And she was ready to fight.
"Dad," she whispered, "I have something to tell you. I'm not just immune to the ghost's power."
"What do you mean?"
Elena's eyes started shining, but not like controlled people. They glowed like they were full of electricity.
"I can handle the ghost's systems too. You didn't just give me immunity, Daddy. You gave me power."
Before I could ask what she meant, Elena broke free from the controlled guard and touched the computer screen with her bare hand.
Every screen in the room exploded with light, and the ghost started screaming.
