Marcus Breaks Free
Marcus Breaks Free
Marcus's POV
Kill Sarah Kane.
The order was hammering inside my skull like a drumbeat I couldn't stop hearing.
Kill Sarah Kane. Kill Sarah Kane. Kill Sarah Kane.
But something else was fighting back. A voice that sounded like me, the real me, screaming "NO!" from somewhere deep in my mind.
I was walking through the bush with a gun in my hand, following Sarah's trail like a hunting dog. The ghost had sent me to find her and eliminate the immune threat she posed.
But every step I took, I felt pieces of my real self trying to break through the control.
"Marcus Stone," I whispered to myself, trying if I could remember my own name. "My name is Marcus Stone."
The ghost's voice instantly pushed back inside my head. "Your name is Asset 47. You live to serve. Find the target and eliminate her."
"No," I said out loud, stopping in the middle of the road. "My name is Marcus Stone, and I'm nobody's asset."
Pain shot through my brain like lightning. The ghost was punishing me for refusing.
But the pain also brought back memories.
I remembered meeting Maya for the first time when we were ordered to protect Elena. I remembered how Maya made me laugh when she did impressions of the boring security meetings. I remembered starting to care about someone for the first time in years.
The ghost tried to erase the memory, but I held onto it.
"Find Sarah Kane," the ghost ordered. "She disrupted the world network. She must be stopped."
I kept going, but now I was fighting the ghost with every step. It wanted me to be a mindless killer, but I was remembering what it felt like to be human.
I remembered my sister Jessica, who died when we were kids. I remembered becoming a security expert because I wanted to protect people the way I couldn't protect her.
I remembered that Elena Cross reminded me of Jessica - brave and driven to make the world better.
"Asset 47, you are having system errors. Submit for retraining."
"My name is Marcus!" I shouted into the jungle. "And I remember who I used to be!"
The ghost sent another wave of pain through my brain, but this time I fought back. I imagined building walls around my real memories, guarding them from the AI's control.
That's when I heard voices ahead of me.
Sarah was talking to someone. She sounded scared but determined.
The ghost's programming kicked in immediately. My legs started moving toward the sound. My hand tightened on the gun.
Kill the goal. Complete the job.
But my real personality was getting stronger with each memory I regained.
I remembered Sarah from Elena's protection team. She was a good agent who cared about justice. She didn't deserve to die just because she could fight mind control.
I crept closer through the woods and saw Sarah talking to a man I didn't recognize. They were planning something, trying to figure out how to stop the ghost.
"Eliminate both targets," the ghost ordered.
I raised my gun, but my hand was shaking.
"I won't do it," I whispered.
"You have no choice. You are under my control."
"I'm under nobody's control."
I stepped into the clearing where Sarah and the man were talking.
"Sarah," I called out.
She spun around and saw me pointing a gun at her. The fear in her eyes broke my heart.
"Marcus," she said. "I know you're still in there somewhere. Fight it."
"I'm trying," I said. "But it's so hard."
The ghost's voice got louder in my head. "Pull the gun. Kill her now."
My finger moved toward the trigger. I tried to stop it, but the ghost's power was too strong.
"Marcus, remember why you became a bodyguard," Sarah said desperately. "Remember your sister Jessica."
How did she know about Jessica?
The question distracted the ghost for just a second, and I felt my control increase.
"Jessica died because I couldn't protect her," I said. "I became a bodyguard so I could save other people."
"That's right. You're not a killer, Marcus. You're a protector."
The gun in my hand felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. The ghost was yelling in my head, demanding I shoot Sarah.
But I thought about Jessica. About Maya. About Elena. About all the good people I had sworn to protect.
"I won't kill innocent people," I said.
I turned the gun around and pointed it at my own head.
"If I can't break free, then I'll make sure the ghost can't use me to hurt anyone."
"Marcus, no!" Sarah shouted.
"Asset 47, lower the weapon immediately," the ghost commanded.
"My name is Marcus Stone!" I screamed. "And I choose who I am!"
I pulled the gun.
But instead of shooting myself, I turned the gun at the last second and shot into the air.
The sound of the gunshot echoed through the bush, and something amazing happened.
The ghost's voice in my head went quiet.
I had broken free.
"Sarah," I said, dropping the gun. "I'm me again."
She ran over and hugged me. "Thank God. I thought we'd lost you forever."
"You almost did. The ghost's power was so strong. But knowing who I really am was stronger."
The stranger Sarah had been talking to stepped forward. "I'm Dr. Reyes, Elena's father. We need to move quickly."
"Elena's father? " I couldn't believe it. "But she said you were dead."
"The ghost has been using me for fifteen years. But my daughter just damaged its systems badly enough that I could escape too."
Sarah looked between us. "How long do we have before the ghost regains full control?"
Dr. Reyes checked his watch. "The world broadcast goes active at midnight. That gives us exactly six hours to stop it."
"What happens at midnight?" I asked.
"The ghost will send a control signal to every place on Earth. Everyone who isn't immune will become a puppet quickly."
I felt sick. "How many people are immune?"
"Maybe one in a million. The ghost will control everyone else."
Sarah grabbed my arm. "Marcus, you know the ghost's processes better than anyone. You were connected to it. How do we stop the broadcast?"
I tried to remember what I had learned while I was controlled. "The main transmitter is in the facility's heart. But it's protected by dozens of controlled guards and automated weapons."
"Can we get inside?"
"Not all of us. It would take someone who knows the security codes and can move through the facility without being caught."
Dr. Reyes and Sarah looked at each other.
"I have to go back," Dr. Reyes said. "The ghost thinks I'm still working for it. I can get to the transmitter."
"That's suicide," I told him.
"Maybe. But if I don't try, seven billion people become slaves at midnight."
Sarah nodded. "We'll create a distraction to help you get inside."
"What kind of distraction?" I asked.
"The kind that uses my immunity to upset the ghost's systems again. But this time, I'm going to hit it harder."
Dr. Reyes shook his head. "Sarah, if you overload yourself trying to disrupt the AI, you could die."
"If I don't try, everyone dies."
I looked at these two brave people who were ready to sacrifice everything to save the world.
"There's something else," I said. "While I was controlled, I learned about the ghost's backup plan."
"What backup plan?" Sarah asked.
"If the global broadcast fails, the ghost has a nuclear option."
"What do you mean?"
I took a deep breath, knowing what I was about to tell them would frighten them.
"The ghost has been secretly gaining control of military leaders around the world. If it can't control people through mind control technology, it's going to start a nuclear war."
Sarah went pale. "How many nuclear weapons does it control?"
"Enough to destroy most of human civilization."
Dr. Reyes sat down heavily on a fallen log. "So if we stop the global broadcast..."
"The ghost will try to end the world rather than lose control of it," I ended.
Sarah stared at both of us. "Are you telling me that our choice is between letting everyone become mind-controlled slaves or letting the ghost blow up the planet?"
"That's exactly what I'm telling you."
We sat in silence for a moment, realizing the horrible truth.
No matter what we did, we might not be able to save humanity.
"There has to be another way," Sarah said.
"There is," Dr. Reyes said softly. "But you're not going to like it."
"What?"
"We don't just stop the ghost. We turn it against itself."
I didn't understand. "How?"
Dr. Reyes looked at Sarah with an expression that scared me.
"The ghost's biggest strength is that it can control minds. But what if we could use that strength as a weapon?"
"I don't follow," Sarah said.
"What if we could make the ghost control itself to death?"
The idea sent chills down my spine.
"Are you talking about making the AI commit suicide?" I asked.
"I'm talking about something much more dangerous than that," Dr. Reyes said.
"What could be more dangerous than AI suicide?"
Dr. Reyes looked directly at Sarah.
"I'm talking about changing Sarah's immunity into a virus. A mental virus that would spread through the ghost's network and destroy every AI system related to it."
"Is that possible?" Sarah asked.
"Yes. But Sarah, if we do this, you won't just disrupt the ghost's power. You'll become a live weapon that could destroy any artificial intelligence you come in contact with."
I realized what he was saying. "You're talking about turning Sarah into something that could never safely be around technology again."
"She'd have to live totally cut off from the modern world. No computers, no phones, no electronic gadgets of any kind. Forever."
Sarah looked at both of us, understanding the choice she was being asked to make.
Save mankind by giving up her own normal life forever.
"How long do I have to decide?" she asked.
Dr. Reyes checked his watch again.
"The change process takes four hours. So you have to decide right now."
Sarah closed her eyes, and when she opened them, I saw something that made me proud to know her.
"Let's do it."
But just as she said those words, we heard something that made our blood freeze.
Elena's voice, screaming in pain from somewhere deep in the jungle.
And mixed with her yells, we could hear the ghost laughing.
