Jess’s POV
Kieran had set up our sleeping bags while I had been gone. The others had also set up but were nowhere to be seen.
“They have gone to see what task John wants them to do” Kieran answered my unasked question.
“Oh ok I suppose that we should go and do the same” I took his hand and went to find John but he was already looking for us with Justin on his heels.
“Hey Kieran and Jess will you please take Justin here out and go hunting? I have already sent Hayley, Oscar and Nick out. I am sure they you will all be able to bring back enough food to feed everyone”
“Sure thing boss” I smiled as I ran to get a gun with Kieran right behind me. Justin was waiting for us when we got back with his gun over his shoulder and a huge grin on his face.
“This is so exciting, my first hunting trip. What do you think that I will catch?”
“Um kill your not catching anything. We are going hunting not fishing” I shook my head as I lead the way in to the forest.
“What ever. I know that you are just trying to kill my buzz and I can tell you now my little sister that is so not going to work. This could have been a great male bonding trip with my new brother in-law. Why did you have to come along Jess?”
“Because big brother. I am a better hunter then both of you put together. So how about you boys sit here and bond and I will come and get you to carry the beast when I have killed and gutted it. Or will you guys bond over gutting?”
“What the hell Kieran help me out here man”
“No way, you left yourself open for that one and I would like my marriage to last longer than a couple of weeks”
“Fine you pussy. Come on then oh mighty leader Jess. Lead us to the beast”
“If you shut your trap we might just see one, but right now your voice is scaring them all away” I gave him an evil look before I moved forward. I crept forward and found a group of deer grazing in a small clearing. I put my hand up to motion for the boys to stay put. I slowly took my rifle of my shoulder and released the safety. I motioned for the boys to come up beside me. I pointed at me and then I pointed at the largest deer in the pack. I did the same thing to the boys so that they both knew what deer to shoot for so that we did not all aim for the same one. It would be nice if we could kill three deer this quickly. I watched the boys get their guns ready and in position. I lowered myself on to the bank so that I had a better aim. Jason finally got over his cockiness and followed suit. I fired the first shot and took my deer down. Kieran and Justin followed simultaneously with their shots, also taking both of their deer down.
“Sweet I just took down my first deer with my first shot. Man I am the bomb” Justin jumped up and down doing a little jig while he was at it.
“Well done. John will be very impressed. Now you just need to gut it and then carry it back to camp”
“Ok sure but I didn’t bring a knife with me”
“Don’t worry I brought two” I handed him a knife and then turned to my deer and started to gut it.
When we got back to camp everything had been set up. There was a huge fire in the middle of the camp. Holes had been dug at the far end of the camp for make shift toilets. I smiled to myself as I walked over to the make shift kitchen with the boys right behind me.
“Do you have enough meat or do you need us to go back out?” I asked as I placed the deer in front of John.
“No we have heaps but can you and Kieran please skin and cut them up for me. Some of the others did not even gut there kill either, so I would really like it if you two could be in charge of that while I make sure that everything is set up and assemble a cooking team”
“Argh John why us?”
“Because you know what you are doing and I cannot be bothered trying to see if we have any butchers in the group it is just easer if you can please do it”
“Fine but you owe us big time”
“I know I do and thank you” He quickly ran off and left the three of us
“I don’t mind helping. I am sure that I can pick it up. It will be a lot quicker with three of us” Justin
turned on his charm and smiled at me.
“Fine you can help. I will get you to do the gutting as you have already done that. I will do the skinning and Kieran can do the butchering. Does that suit everyone?”
“Sweet can I have a skin to wear as a dress? Then I would feel like a cave man hunter”
“You’re a dick brother now start gutting. The sooner we start the sooner we can finish and start to eat”
By the time we had finished the first deer John had managed to assemble a cooking crew. Everything ran smoothly. Justin gutted, I skinned, Kieran butchered, some guy called Cory tenderised the meat with a rock, another guy called Shuck cooked the meat and a chick called Fiona buttered the bread. I had no idea where the bread had come from but there were a few loafs. John had also managed to bring along two huge bottles of tomato sauce. I felt sorry for the sucker he made carry them. As soon as the first batch of meat was cooked people started to line up and get there food. That is always the bad thing about preparing the food. You are always the last to eat. Finally after what felt like forever we finally got to eat and it was the best venison that I had ever tasted. After we had all finished eating and cleared up John made us all sit in a circle around the fire.
“Ok this is going to be the last chance that we will get to fully get to know each other. I want everyone to tell us about themselves, what they do for a job, there family, anything that will help us all get to know you. I know that you think this is silly but we are about to go to war and I want you to know about the people that are fighting alongside you. I will start and we will go clock wise around the circle”
