Chapter 79 Seventy-nine
Just as I had speculated the previous day, the parents of those kids were lined up in the headquarters, awaiting my arrival.
When they saw me step out of the car at the parking lot, they hurried towards me, their faces twisted in despair.
Surprisingly, only one couple was dressed like an elite among them, the rest were dressed in normal people's clothes.
And they don't look rich either, only the couple dressed in expensive clothing looked rich.
Well, does it mean the four kids came from a poor home? Wow!
“Detective Lizzy?”
The rich couple called, blocking my way.
“What can I do for you guys? You have ten seconds to speak, my time is tight.”
“Our kids went missing yesterday, please help us find them. They study at…”
“Time up,”
I announced, paving the way, and walked away. But they hastened their steps after me, speaking, and calling my name at the same time.
“Why are you so rude? You should listen to us, lady!”
Excuse me?
I spun around, shifted the glasses on my face to the nose, glaring at the woman who had just said that.
“Our kids are missing and we had sleepless nights yesterday. The least you could do is listen to us and do your work by finding them,”
She sobbed, tears flowing down her round face.
If only they knew I wouldn't take that case, then they wouldn't be wasting their time trying to talk to me.
“Go find your kids, woman. In that school, everyone knows them as a notorious gang so, trail them to wherever you think they would have gone. Who knows, they might be having fun in hell now.”
The women gasped, and the men puffed.
“Our kids aren't who you think they are, lady. You have to take our case because it is our right to make you work for us.”
Oh, really? That is how they look at me? Like a puppet to be turned around however they wished?
Seems they are forgetting one thing. I am a detective who chooses the kind of case I want to solve.
I just don't involve myself in any cases that would clear the names of criminals. Since my working career, I'd only made the mistake once, but that would never repeat itself.
I ignored them, turned around, and went inside the building.
“No one should come into my office now, there is something important I need to do.”
The officers nodded their heads and I went upstairs to the office.
While inside, I locked the door, threw my bag on the desk, and collapsed on the sofa.
For the first time in history, I was going to enjoy myself and ignore the serious case hanging in the balance.
Anyway, they can stay here till dawn and I won't give attention to them.
I sat properly on the sofa, positioned my hand on the slot between the window, and rested my head on my hand.
Staring at the busy street brought back a lot of memories to my mind. From the first day I started working in the headquarters, to the day I was first promoted.
When everyone had people congratulating, and bringing them flowers, I had only myself as Alex was out of town that day.
His business was more important to him than my promotion.
Sighs.
Those were all in the past now, and I am so happy to become who I am today. Looking out for myself first is the only thing that has kept me going all these years.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A loud, fierce knock came on the door, cracking me out of my reverie.
For someone whose anger is tinier than a human hair, my blood started raging.
Who on earth was banging my door so hard? Do they want to bring down the entire building?
“I know you are in there, lady, you'd better open this door now or I'll bring it down!”
Intriguing.
I folded my arms, waiting for whoever it was to break down the door. How would he even do it? That door was so strong that it would only break the person’s bones.
Then I heard the voices of officers trying to talk to the man to stop what he was doing. But instead of listening to them, he started howling insults at them.
“Detective Lizzy won't look at your age if you keep doing this, Mr. You'd better leave now before she gets angry.”
Others joined in the door banging and when I’d had enough of it, I got up, hastened towards the door, and pulled back the door after unlocking it.
“What nonsense was that?”
I glared at them one after the other, but the older man wasn't moved by my anger unlike the other people who had stepped back.
“We have been waiting for more than two hours now, but you've refused to listen to us, lady. Why are you so rude and…”
I raised my hand to slap him, but stopped, hanging my hand in the air. If only he were younger than that, nothing would have stopped me from beating the hell out of him.
“Thank your stars, old man. You would have seen your teeth flying in the air right now, but your age saved you. If you guys don't want to end up in prison, kindly vacate the headquarters and never return.
I am not interested in handling your children's cases. And if you push me to the wall, I will be forced to go into their school and dig out their records.
You guys know what will follow next after I find out the criminal things they are involved with in the school.
They will end up spending half of their lives in prison, or even their lifetime. Go away now before I change my mind!”
I rumbled, my voice reverberating like a clap.
Others grabbed the old man’s hand and pulled him away. And even as he was being dragged out, he kept cursing loudly, threatening to burn down the headquarters if anything should occur to his son.
“Detective Lizzy? Don't you think you should take over this case? I saw on the news that the kids were missing and it is our duty to find them. Besides, you love solving cases all the time, and you hate to stay idle.”
Tsk tsk, if only you knew the truth, my comrade.
