Regret
Regret
Alea's POV
“What's it that you want?” Kairo asked the guard who stood frozen like he had seen something forbidden.
“It's….The Elders said they'd be making a visit to the quarantined camp and they asked if Your Highness and Your Majesty would like to make a round too” He said, bowing deeply and I looked at Kairo first before wanting to give a response.
His gaze asked me a question and I got that so perfectly well.
“I'm okay, I'm not tired at all” I said. He wanted to know if I would stay back and take some rest and that confirmed that he would be going so I would love to go with him.
We were fated to be together after all.
“We will be there,” Kairo simply said to the guard. “Yes, Alpha” he said and then exited the garden.
Kairo stood up and before I could even attempt to stand up to walk, he swept me up in his arms making me gasp as he smirked while his gaze was locked onto me.
“I would have loved to take you into the room to have you like this, but what do we do? The pack calls for us again” He said and I chuckled.
“How about we do the pack's bidding first and attend to ours later?” I said. “Yes, I figured out we should” he smiled and took me down to the hall, down the hallways and down to the horse stables.
Maids looked, chuckled at what he was doing. Guards also did the same but none said anything. I was quite embarrassed but also couldn't contain the excitement that bubbled inside me.
He dropped me on the white horse that one of the guards had brought out for us. Then he hopped on behind me and kicked the animal to ride.
The Elders were already waiting in front of the quarantined camp. They sighted us and bowed in greetings. Kairo made them rise and then led us all into the camp.
I looked around and realized that the patients inside here had doubled the ones that were here earlier. More patients were being brought in and that only means one thing, for me to make haste in doing what the moon goddess wants.
Kairo and the Elders walked in the right direction while I left them and walked in the left. I knew my way around here after being here once and I knew what I was searching for.
Kaileth's bed. My stepmother.
I found it and drew the curtain open only to realize that her eyes were open. My eyes went wide open in shock but I was quick to mask it as I watched her surprised look on the bed.
“Alea?” She called and I cleared my throat, finally proud of my presence.
She scoffed. “Are you here to finish me off?” Her voice was faint, sick yet annoying.
“What?” I asked and she tried standing out of bed. She sat herself down on the bed, her gaze cascading over me in disgust.
To think that I must be stupid enough to be standing here because I at least cared a bit about the person on the bed.
She had done me nothing but dirty stuff. She had made me question my existence in this world, treated me way worse than how a human could ever treat trash but I still came here because I at least cared.
Because I had a heart.
“You must be very happy to see me in this state, aren't you?” She asked and I chuckled.
“I guess I am. And as much as I would have loved for you to rot here and be in pain until death finds you, I can't” I said, smiling.
She looked up at me like she doesn't understand but her gaze doesn't even tell me she wants to understand. The grudge she holds against me occupied all the space in her heart that she wouldn't have ever wished for an explanation from me.
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“I'm the only one who can save you from this wretched state you are in” I smirked, glad that I'm truly her savior.
I didn't know how she got affected by this, but knowing she won't be able to get out of this without my help somehow excited me.
“Stop trying to act like the savior here. You are no Queen. You only stole my daughter's spot!” She yelled, and I wondered how she was so strong despite being sick.
“You think so?” I asked, my gaze darkening.
“She was meant to marry the Alpha. Not you!” She yelled, gritting her teeth.
I leaned in closer, not caring that I could also get infected by the strange disease. “I'm his mate, woman. Fate brought us together so leave your daughter out of this!” I said, seething so hard because I truly wanted her to understand that Kairo wasn't Cassie's to begin with.
“And the moon goddess bestowed the title of the Phantom Queen onto me. I was destined to be Queen, not your fucking unwanted daughter!” I yelled and she laughed, so cunning, so cruel.
“We will see to that when I'm back on my feet, hale and hearty. I will do everything to get you out of that palace, Alea. Watch me” She said and I smirked.
“Try it. I could make you die here if I want, crazy bitch!” I called my stepmother that, and I was never going to regret it. She stood up from her bed wanting to slap me across the face but I caught my hand and threw her back on the bed.
She fell back to the bed, staring at me with shock in her face like she hadn't expected me to fight back. Heck! Was she expecting me to stand there and get slapped by nobody like her?
“Alea….I will make you regret this! You will regret making me like this when I've done nothing but take you in, you stupid wench” She said and I ran my hands through my hair.
I've had enough of her tantrums. Not anymore. I won't allow her to walk all over me ever again.
