Midnight Conversation

Alex's body jerked forcefully as Professor Chen injected him with a clear liquid. The blue lines pulsing beneath his skin began to fade slowly, each one fading like a dying light.

"That should stop the activation sequence," Chen said, tossing the empty syringe aside. "For now."

Alex slumped back in the chair, gasping for breath. The burning pain was gone, but he felt hollow inside, as if something important had been taken from him.

"What was that?" Emily asked, her voice shaking.

"Some kind of nanotechnology," Chen stated. "Reed must have programmed it to activate remotely. The compound I gave Alex will suppress it temporarily, but it's not a permanent solution."

Ethan hadn't let go of Alex's hand the entire time. "So what happens now?"

"We need to get back to campus," Liam said strongly. "Reed thinks he's activated Alex. He'll be expecting him to return, like a homing pigeon."

"I am not a pigeon," Alex snapped. "Or a robot. Or whatever Reed thinks I am."

But doubt crept into his mind. The movie had shown a child who looked exactly like him. And the way his body had responded to Reed's words... something wasn't right.

"We should split up," Jasmine offered. "It's too dangerous for all of us to be together."

After much argument, they decided on a plan. Professor Chen would keep researching the robot Sophia for clues while the rest of them returned to school in pairs. They would act normal during the day while looking for information about Sophia's location at night.

"Remember," Chen warned as they prepared to leave, "the suppressant I gave Alex will only last about 48 hours. After that, the nanotechnology will reactivate."

"Great," Alex mumbled. "A ticking time bomb inside me."

They drove back to school in tense silence. It was past midnight when they arrived, sneaking in through the service entrance to escape any security cameras.

"Emily and I will check the science building," Jasmine whispered. "Reed's office might have something."

"I'll watch the parking lot," Liam added. "If Reed shows up, we need to know."

That left Alex and Ethan to return to their dorm room, which felt too dangerous after finding the flash drive there.

"We'll stay in the lounge," Ethan decided. "No one uses it this late."

The dorm lounge was dark and empty. They sat on opposite ends of a worn couch, both too wired to sleep despite their tiredness.

"You should rest," Ethan said after a while. "You look terrible."

"Thanks," Alex answered with a weak smile. "That's exactly what I need to hear right now."

Ethan moved closer. "I didn't mean it like that. I'm worried about you."

Alex stared at his hands, half expecting to see blue lines appear again. "What if Reed was telling the truth? What if I'm not... real?"

"Don't say that," Ethan's voice was angry. "I know who you are."

"Do you? Because I don't anymore." Alex stood up and paced across the small room. "My whole life could be fake. My memories, my family, everything."

Ethan watched him move back and forth. "The past doesn't matter as much as what you choose to do now."

"Easy for you to say. You're not the science experiment."

"No, I'm just the guy who's in love with one."

Alex froze, looking at Ethan in shock. "What did you say?"

Ethan stood up too, his face determined. "You heard me. I love you, Alex. Clone or not. I have for a long time."

"But Liam... I thought you two had something."

"Liam's my friend. That's all." Ethan stepped closer. "It's always been you."

Alex's heart pounded in his chest. After everything that had happened, this felt both impossible and exactly right.

"I don't know what's going to happen to me," Alex whispered. "Reed did something to me. I could be dangerous."

"I don't care."

"You should." Alex backed away. "What if I'm programmed to hurt you? What if that's my 'function'?"

Ethan shook his head. "I've seen you panic when you kill a spider. Whatever Reed thinks he created, you're not a weapon."

"Then what am I?"

Before Ethan could answer, the room door opened. Both boys tensed, ready to run.

But it was just a sleepy student getting water from the small fridge. They stayed quiet until he left, then burst into nervous laughter.

"We're getting paranoid," Ethan said.

"With good reason." Alex checked his watch. "The others should be back soon."

They fell silent again, the weight of Ethan's statement hanging between them.

"When this is all over," Alex finally said, "if we survive and I don't turn into some kind of monster... we should talk about this. About us."

Ethan smiled. "I'd like that."

Their phones buzzed simultaneously. A text from Jasmine: Found something. Reed's secret lab. Meeting at east parking lot in 20 minutes.

"Let's go," Alex said, suddenly motivated.

They slipped out of the dorm building, sticking to the darkness as they crossed campus. The night was eerily quiet, with only a few lights still on in faraway buildings.

"Something feels wrong," Ethan whispered as they neared the parking lot.

Alex nodded. His watch wasn't vibrating, but the hair on the back of his neck was sticking up. "Where are the others?"

The parking lot was empty except for a single car with its headlights off. As they got closer, they saw someone sitting behind the wheel.

"Is that Liam?" Ethan squinted in the darkness.

Suddenly, Alex's watch started to vibrate. "No, it's not—"

The car door opened, and Professor Reed stepped out.

"Alex," he called, his voice friendly as if meeting a student after class. "I was hoping you'd join us."

"Us?" Alex's voice cracked.

Reed smiled and opened the back door of the car. Liam emerged, his face expressionless, his moves stiff and mechanical.

"No," Ethan whispered in horror. "That's not really him."

"Very observant," Reed nodded. "This is an improved model. More realistic than the others, don't you think?"

Alex felt sick. Had they been going with a robot version of Liam all this time? Or had Reed caught him and replaced him recently?

"Where's the real Liam?" Alex asked.

"Safe. For now." Reed pointed toward the car. "I have your sister too. And soon, I'll have your friends. Unless you come with me willingly."

"Don't listen to him," Ethan hissed, grabbing Alex's arm.

Alex's mind raced. Was this a trap? Probably. But it might be the only chance to find Sophia and the real Liam.

"If I go with you," Alex said slowly, "will you leave my friends alone?"

Reed smiled. "Of course."

"Alex, no!" Ethan tightened his grip.

"I have to," Alex mumbled. "We're out of time."

"Then I'm coming too."

Alex turned to face Ethan fully. "No. Someone needs to warn the others. Find Professor Chen. Tell her what happened."

Before Ethan could argue, Alex leaned forward and kissed him quickly. "Find me," he whispered against Ethan's lips.

Then he pulled away and walked toward Reed's car.

"Excellent decision," Reed said, opening the passenger door.

As Alex climbed in, he caught a glimpse of something in the back seat. A small metal box with flashing lights and a timer counting down from 10:00.

"Oh, I forgot to mention," Reed said as the doors locked automatically. "I lied about leaving your friends alone."

The car pulled away, leaving Ethan standing alone in the parking lot. Through the rear window, Alex watched in fear as the robot Liam moved toward Ethan with inhuman speed.

And in that moment, Alex felt the blue lines begin to spread across his skin once more.
