Jasmine's Play
"He's lying!" Alex yelled, knocking over a chair as he jumped to his feet. "I'm not a clone. I can't be!"
Professor Chen grabbed his arm. "Calm down. Reed is manipulating you."
Alex's mind raced with terrible thoughts. Was his whole life a lie? Were his parents even his real parents? He felt like the floor was falling beneath him.
"We need to focus," Liam said strongly. "Reed is trying to distract us from rescuing Sophia."
Ethan put his hand on Alex's shoulder. "Whatever Reed claims, it doesn't change who you are."
Alex took a deep breath, trying to balance himself. "You're right. Saving Sophia comes first."
Professor Chen studied the robot for another hour before looking up with a frown. "Reed's encrypted the core programming. I can't reprogram it, but I can disable its tracking system."
"So Reed can't find us through the robot?" Emily asked.
"Correct. And I've found something else." Chen pointed to a small device inside the robot's head. "This is a storage drive. It might contain information we could use against Reed."
Just then, Jasmine's phone buzzed. She looked at it and gasped.
"What is it?" Alex asked.
"The campus play... I completely forgot! It's tonight, and I'm the lead." She looked around at their shocked faces. "I know it sounds crazy with everything happening, but if I don't show up, people will notice. They might start asking questions."
"It's too dangerous," Liam protested. "Reed could be watching the campus."
"Which is exactly why we should go," Ethan said suddenly. "It's the last place he'd expect us to be. Hidden in plain sight."
"And we could use the opportunity to check your dorm room," Emily added. "See if Reed left any clues about where he's keeping Sophia."
Alex didn't like it, but the plan made sense. They needed to look normal while figuring out their next move.
"Fine," he said. "But we stay together and keep our eyes open."
They spent the day prepping. Professor Chen gave them special watches that could identify the electrical signals from Reed's robots.
"They look human, but they give off a distinct energy pattern," she stated. "These will vibrate if a robot comes within thirty feet of you."
As evening neared, they disguised themselves as best they could. Alex wore glasses and a hat, while Ethan changed his hair a darker color. Liam stayed in the shadows, keeping watch from a distance.
The college theater was packed. Students and teachers crowded the door, excited for the opening night of "Dreams and Nightmares" – a play written by the drama department about people trapped in their worst fears.
"How fitting," Alex muttered as they found chairs near the back.
The lights dimmed, and the play started. Jasmine appeared on stage, playing a character named Maya who found she could enter other people's dreams. The crowd cheered as she delivered her opening lines with perfect emotion.
Alex tried to focus on the play, but his mind kept going back to Reed's bad claim. Was he really a clone? Is that why Reed wanted him so badly?
Halfway through the first act, Alex's watch vibrated slightly. He tensed, pushing Ethan beside him.
"Mine too," Ethan whispered. "Someone's here."
They scanned the audience closely. Near the front row, a tall man in a dark jacket sat perfectly still, too still to be normal. He wasn't cheering or moving like the others around him.
"Section C, third row," Alex whispered into the small radio they'd been given. "Man in dark jacket."
"I see him," came Liam's voice. "There's another one by the exit door."
Alex's heart beat. Reed had sent his robots to find them.
On stage, Jasmine continued her act, but her eyes briefly locked with Alex's. She'd noticed something was wrong.
"What's the plan?" Emily whispered from Alex's other side.
"We wait," Alex decided. "If we run now, we'll cause a scene. Let's see what they do first."
The play lasted for another twenty minutes. The robot-like figures didn't move from their positions, just watching the crowd carefully.
Then, during a scene change when the stage went dark, Jasmine suddenly appeared beside them.
"Side exit, now," she hissed. "I created a distraction backstage."
As if on cue, a loud crash came from behind the curtains, followed by screams. The crowd murmured in confusion as stage hands rushed to fix whatever had happened.
They slipped out the side door into the cool night air. Liam was already waiting with the truck going.
"Emily and I will check the dorm room," Alex said quickly. "You two keep the truck ready."
"I'm coming with you," Ethan declared.
"No, stay with Jasmine. If those robots realize we're gone, she'll need protection."
Before Ethan could argue, Alex and Emily were running across campus toward the dorms. The buildings were mostly empty, with everyone at the play or out for Friday night.
They reached Alex's room and opened the door carefully. Inside, everything looked normal – too normal. Alex's bed was made exactly, which he never did himself.
"Someone's been here," he whispered.
Emily pointed to Alex's desk. On top of his textbooks sat a small blue flash drive with a note: "The truth about you."
Alex's hand shook as he picked it up. Was this Reed's proof? The answers to who – or what – he really was?
"We should get back to the others," Emily suggested.
As they turned to leave, Alex's watch started vibrating violently. A figure blocked the doorway – the same man from the theater, his moves stiff and unnatural.
"Target located," the robot said in a flat voice.
Emily screamed as the robot lunged toward them. Alex grabbed his desk chair and swung it hard, knocking the robot sideways long enough for them to slip past and run down the hallway.
"The stairs!" Alex shouted as they heard the robot chasing them.
They burst through the basement door and raced down the steps. Behind them, the robot moved with scary speed, its footsteps echoing in the empty building.
They reached the bottom floor and ran outside, sprinting across the yard toward where Liam had parked the truck. They could see it waiting at the curb, engine going.
Just as they were about to reach it, Alex's foot caught on something, sending him falling onto the grass. The flash drive flew from his pocket, falling a few feet away.
"Go!" he shouted to Emily. "I'll get it!"
As Emily reached the truck, Alex scrambled toward the flash drive. His fingers had just closed around it when a hand grabbed his ankle.
"Got you," said the robot, its face strangely calm as it pulled Alex toward it.
Suddenly, headlights blinded them both. The truck swerved onto the grass, hitting the robot and sending it flying. The door flew open.
"Get in!" Ethan yelled.
Alex jumped into the truck, and they sped away from school, tires squealing on the pavement.
"Did you find anything?" Jasmine asked, still in her stage makeup.
Alex held up the flash drive. "Maybe the truth about who I really am."
Back at Professor Chen's cabin, they crowded around her computer as she inserted the drive. A single video file emerged on the screen.
"Are you sure you want to see this?" Ethan asked softly.
Alex nodded, his mouth dry. "I need to know."
Chen clicked play, and Professor Reed's face filled the screen. He looked younger, the video clearly taken years ago.
"Subject A has passed all developmental tests," Reed said carefully. "The clone shows normal human responses and no signs of degradation. The memory implantation was successful."
Alex felt sick as Reed continued.
"However, the subject cannot know their true purpose. When the time comes, we will activate the sequence and Subject A will fulfill the function they were created for."
The video cut to a shot of a small boy playing with blocks – a boy who looked exactly like Alex in his childhood pictures.
"What function?" Alex whispered. "What did he create me for?"
As if answering his question, the film showed Reed holding up a small device.
"When activated, the clone will become the perfect vessel," Reed explained to someone off-camera. "And our work will live forever."
The screen went black, but one final audio clip played:
"Find me, Alex. Only I can stop what's happening inside you right now."
Alex doubled over in pain as the words ended, a burning sensation spreading through his chest. His vision blurred, and he felt something moving beneath his skin – something that shouldn't be there.
"Alex!" Ethan cried, reaching for him.
Alex looked up at his friends with terror in his eyes as strange blue lines started to spread across his skin like glowing veins.
"I think," he gasped through the pain, "Reed just activated me."
