The Council of Three Packs
"Get back!" Lucian yelled and threw himself at the thing that looked like Aurora. When they hit the ground, they were a mess of limbs and anger.
The thing that looked like Aurora growled, and its face twisted in ways that a human face shouldn't. As it fought Lucian's hold, black lines appeared on its skin.
In the middle of the fight, Tobias pulled Caleb away. "What is that thing?" he asked, eyes wide with fear.
Before Caleb could answer, a blinding flash of blue light burst from the forest. As the real Aurora rushed into the open, her hands were filled with power.
She screamed, "Get away from my brother!" and sent a wave of energy at the thing.
When the blue light hit the fake, it howled in pain. Its skin bubbled and melted, showing a dark, shadowy area below. With a final shriek, it melted into black smoke that slithered away between the trees.
Caleb looked at Aurora, his heart pounding. "How do I know you're really you?"
Aurora stepped forward, her eyes—the same dark gray as Caleb's—filled with tears. She held out her hand, palm up, showing a small birthmark shaped like a crescent moon.
"We've had these since birth," she said softly. "Mother said they marked us as twins of the moon."
Caleb looked down at his own hand where the same mark had always been. Relief washed over him as he reached for his sister's hand.
The moment their hands touched, the twin bond flared to life. Memories flowed between them—childhood games, secret hideaways, the day they were torn apart when Victor took over the pack.
"It's really you," Caleb whispered, pulling her into a hug.
"What was that thing?" Tobias asked, helping Lucian to his feet.
"A shadow mimic," Aurora explained. "Victor has been creating them with his blood magic. They can take the form of anyone they've seen."
"And it was after Caleb," Lucian said grimly. "This changes everything. We need to gather the packs."
Three days later, Caleb stood at the edge of Howling Rock, watching wolves come from three different directions. The leaders of Crimson Fang, Silver Creek, and the Moonshadow rebels were meeting for the first time in wolf history.
"Nervous?" Aurora asked, coming to stand beside him.
"Terrified," Caleb revealed. "What if they can't work together?"
Aurora squeezed his hand. "Then we make them. That's what Bondspeakers do, right? We connect wolves."
Below them, Lucian and Tobias welcomed Reid, the acting Alpha of Silver Creek. Behind Reid came a group of big, confident wolves Caleb didn't recognize.
From the east, Thorne arrived with the Moonshadow rebels—wolves who had escaped Victor's control and were fighting to recover their pack.
"It's time," Aurora said, pulling Caleb toward the meeting place.
The great stone circle at the top of Howling Rock had been used for pack meetings for generations. Today, it would watch something never seen before—three packs coming together as equals.
As Caleb and Aurora entered the circle, all eyes turned to them. The twins, both Bondspeakers, both thought to be myths until lately.
Lucian stepped forward, his presence demanding respect. "We've gathered today because we face a threat none of us can defeat alone. Victor Drake has corrupted the sacred magic of our ancestors. If he completes the shadow ritual during the dark moon, we all fall under his control."
Murmurs spread through the crowd. Fear and anger mixed in the air.
"Why should we trust you?" Thorne asked, his words carrying across the circle. "Crimson Fang has never been a friend to Moonshadow."
"And Silver Creek has always stayed neutral," added a female wolf from Reid's pack. "Why risk our wolves now?"
Caleb felt their doubt like a physical weight. Without thinking, he stepped into the center of the circle.
"Because this isn't about packs anymore," he said, his voice stronger than he felt. "Victor isn't just trying to control Moonshadow. The shadow ritual will give him power over every wolf in the territory."
"And why should we believe you?" someone called out. "A scentless wolf with strange powers?"
Whispers spread through the crowd. Caleb's old insecurities threatened to silence him, but then he felt Aurora's power through their bond, and Lucian and Tobias's faith through the mate bond.
"Because I've seen what Victor can do," Caleb answered. "I was there when he drank the blood of the original shadow wolves. I felt his power grow. And I know what he plans to do with it."
"As do I," Aurora added, joining her brother. "Victor killed our mother—or tried to. He separated us because he feared what twin Bondspeakers could do together."
"And what exactly is that?" Reid asked, genuinely curious.
Aurora and Caleb exchanged looks. "We can connect wolves across pack bonds," Caleb stated. "We can strengthen existing bonds or create new ones."
"Show us," Thorne challenged.
Taking a deep breath, Caleb reached for Aurora's hand. Together, they closed their eyes and called on their power. Blue light spread from their joined hands, forming a web that linked every wolf in the circle.
For one breathtaking moment, they all felt it—the links between them, the strength they could share, the power they held together. Then Caleb and Aurora released the energy, and the light faded.
Silence fell over the crowd.
"That," Lucian said into the quiet, "is why we need to stand together. Not just Crimson Fang, not just Silver Creek or Moonshadow rebels, but all of us."
"What do you propose?" Reid asked.
"A Council of Three Packs," Lucian answered. "Each pack maintains its territory, but we make decisions together about threats that affect us all."
"And who leads this council?" Thorne asked. "You?"
"No one leads," Tobias said, stepping forward. "That's the point. Each pack has equal voice. One representative from each pack forms the council."
More murmurs, but this time with less fear and more attention.
"And what about them?" someone asked, looking at Caleb and Aurora. "Which pack do the Bondspeakers belong to?"
"Neither," Caleb said before anyone could answer for him. "Aurora and I stand neutral. We'll advise the council, but we won't take sides."
This caused an uproar. Wolves shouted over each other, some arguing that Bondspeakers were too powerful to stay unaligned, others insisting they should be protected by all packs.
"ENOUGH!" Lucian's Alpha voice cut through the confusion. "This is exactly what Victor wants—to divide us with fear and suspicion."
"Lucian is right," Reid said, shocking everyone. "I've seen what Victor's shadow wolves can do. My pack lost twelve wolves to his raids. If we don't stand together, we fall one by one."
Slowly, the mood changed. Wolves from different packs began talking to each other, sharing stories of Victor's attacks, finding common ground in their shared enemy.
As the sun began to set, Thorne stepped into the center of the circle.
"Moonshadow has suffered most under Victor's rule," he said sadly. "Many of us lost family, friends, our homes. If there's a chance to reclaim our pack and stop Victor once and for all, I'm willing to try this council."
Reid nodded. "Silver Creek stands with you."
All eyes turned to Lucian.
"Crimson Fang will fight alongside our brothers and sisters," he stated. "The Council of Three Packs begins today."
Cheers exploded around them. Wolves who had been enemies for generations now clapped each other on the back, shared hugs, and made plans to train together.
In the middle of the celebration, Caleb felt a sharp pain in his chest. He gasped, doubling over. Aurora was at his side instantly.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her voice tight with fear.
"I don't know," Caleb whispered. "Something's happening with the mate bond."
Across the circle, Lucian and Tobias were deep in talk with the other pack leaders. They showed no sign of concern.
"That's not possible," Aurora said. "If something was wrong with the mate bond, they would feel it too."
The pain increased. Caleb bit his lip to keep from crying out.
"Something's not right," he managed to say. "It feels like... like something's trying to break the bond."
Aurora's eyes widened. "Victor. He must be starting the ritual early."
"But we still have a day until the dark moon," Caleb protested through hard teeth.
"Unless..." Aurora's face paled. "Caleb, what if Victor found another Bondspeaker? Someone who could help him target your bonds specifically?"
"That's not possible," Caleb said. "We're the only ones left."
But even as he said it, he remembered his mother's words from the vision: "There are others like us, hidden away for their protection."
Another wave of pain hit him, stronger than before. This time, Lucian and Tobias felt it too. They broke off their talks, heads snapping toward Caleb.
"Something's breaking," Caleb gasped as they rushed to his side. "I can feel it tearing."
Just as Lucian and Tobias reached him, a voice spoke inside Caleb's head—a voice he knew couldn't be real.
"Come to me, my son," his mother's voice whispered. "Only you can stop what's coming."
Caleb's eyes rolled back in his head as darkness took him. The last thing he heard was Aurora's scream as the mate bond linking him to Lucian and Tobias snapped like a thread cut by invisible scissors.
In the dark that followed, a single thought formed: Victor wasn't working alone. And whoever was helping him knew exactly how to break a Bondspeaker's heart.
