Chapter 76 Seventy Six

Chapter 76 Seventy Six
Mira was still staring at the dark screen of her phone when it vibrated again.

She let out a weary sigh.

Another call this  time, Anna. For a second, she considered ignoring it. She was exhausted. Emotionally drained. She didn’t think she had the strength for another conversation.

But she answered anyway.“…Hey.”

Anna didn’t even bother greeting her.

“Mira!” she exclaimed, panic obvious in her voice. “Are you okay? I heard about the shooting.”

“I’m fine,” Mira replied quietly.

“You weren’t there .”

“I was on a call with Matthew , after tonight we are pulling you out…” Anna let out a shaky breath. “We can’t keep you there .”

Mira frowned. “You talked to Matthew?” she asked, cutting her off. “How did he even get your number? You two just met.”

Anna went silent for a second before letting out a sigh . “Not your ex, Voss.”

“What?”

“I meant your boss. Matthew Davids.”

“Oh…”Relief washed over her. “I thought you meant…”

“I know who you thought I meant.”Anna sighed “Matthew called the office the moment the news broke. He’s been trying to reach you for hours.”

Mira rubbed her forehead. “I turned my phone off without realizing it.”

“We’ve both agreed and you can’t say no this time .”

“On what ?”Mira asked

“We’re pulling you out.”

Mira closed her eyes. She was sick of it.

Another person.Another lecture. Another attempt to get her to leave. She pinched the bridge of her nose, struggling to keep her frustration under control.

“I’ve got this under control,” she said, her voice tighter than she intended.

“No, you don’t.”Anna’s tone became firm. “You’ve got absolutely nothing under control, Mira Voss.”

“I’m handling it.” Mira said trying not to lose control.

“You nearly got shot.”

“Nearly not shot that makes me fine Anna… I am fine”.

“You are not fine.”

“I’m still breathing.”

“For now.”Anna said not backing down.

Mira’s patience was beginning to snap. “You don’t understand.”

“Look I don’t know if there’s a sick obsession with you wanting a promotion so bad or wanting to prove yourself.”Anna didn’t raise her voice.”or this has something to do with Corvin.”

Mira stayed quiet she knew everyone was worried but she couldn’t leave.

“This isn’t up for debate,” Anna continued. “You’re leaving that mansion first thing tomorrow morning.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m not abandoning this investigation.”

“This isn’t an investigation anymore.”Anna’s voice cracked slightly.“It’s a death sentence.”

Before Mira could answer… Three soft knocks echoed through the bedroom.A timid voice followed from the other side. “Miss… it’s me. Lena.”

Mira looked toward the door. Anna immediately heard it. “Who’s that?” she asked.

“I’ll call you back.”

“Mira—”

“I’ll call you back,” she repeated before ending the call.

The room fell silent again. She took a slow breath before turning toward the door. “Come in, Lena.”

The door opened carefully. Lena stepped inside with hesitantly , gently closing it behind her. Her eyes swept nervously around the bedroom before settling on Mira.

“You came to check on me?” Mira asked.

Lena nodded quickly. “I… I wanted to make sure you were alright, Miss.”

“I’m okay.”

Lena looked at her bloodstained dress.“…Are you sure?”

Mira managed a tired smile.“I’ll survive.”

The moment those words left her mouth…Lena’s eyes filled with tears.

Then, without warning…She burst into sobs.

“I can’t believe it’s happening again…”

Mira’s smile disappeared instantly.

“Lena?”

The young maid covered her mouth, trying to stop herself from crying, but it only made the sobs worse.  “I’m sorry…”

“Lena.”

Mira stepped closer.“What happened?”

Lena shook her head repeatedly.“I thought…”

Another sob escaped her.“I thought he was done doing this.”

Mira’s brows knitted together.“…Doing what?”

Lena looked up at her with tear-filled eyes.“This…”

She gestured helplessly toward the dried blood on Mira’s dress. “…Faking attack again .”

Mira froze. “…What?”

Lena immediately realized what she’d said.

Her face drained of color. “I…”

“You just said…” Mira whispered. “…faking?”

Lena bit her lip.“I shouldn’t have…”

“What did you mean?”

“I…”

“Lena.”

Mira’s voice became firmer.“What did you mean by ‘again’?”

Lena lowered her head.

Her hands twisted together nervously. “This isn’t the first time…” She swallowed hard. “…Mr. Corvin has pretended someone was trying to kill him.”

The room suddenly felt much colder.Mira stared at her “…Explain.”

Lena hesitated. “I don’t know everything.”

“Tell me what you do know.”

Lena took a shaky breath.“A few years ago…” She glanced nervously toward the closed bedroom door as if afraid someone might overhear. “…he came home covered in blood.”

Mira remained silent.n“Everyone thought he’d been attacked.”m“The entire household was in tears.”

“The doctor was called. “Mr. Antonio looked ready to burn the city down trying to find whoever had done it.”mLena’s voice dropped to barely a whisper.“But later… I accidentally overheard Mr. Corvin laughing.”

Mira stop there stunned.“Laughing?”

Lena nodded.“He told Mr. Antonio…”She swallowed.
“…‘It worked exactly as planned.’”

A strange feeling settled in Mira’s stomach.“What worked?”

“I don’t know.”

Lena shook her head.“I only heard those words before they noticed I was outside. The next day his third wife Miss Amanda was found dead.

Mira staggered. She tired to balance herself and not let it show how shocked she was.

Lena  looked back at Mira.“So when I heard he’d been shot tonight…”tears rolled down her cheeks. “…I kept praying this was another one of his plans.”

Her voice broke completely.“But then I saw all that blood…”She looked at Mira’s stained hands.

“…you need to run away from here Miss or you’ll die.”
