Chapter 77 Seventy Seven
Chapter 77 Seventy Seven
Mira could see the fear in Lena’s eyes, and even though she didn’t want to admit it, she was scared too.
Before she could say anything, a knock came from the door, making them both freeze.
“Miss Voss.” Antonio’s voice came from the other side. “Miss Voss?”
Mira took a slow breath before answering, forcing herself to steady her voice. “Yes?”
“Boss sent for you.” He paused when she didn’t respond immediately. “Is everything okay in there?”
Mira glanced at Lena. The young maid was trembling. “He must not know I’m here, Miss, or he’ll suspect I said something,” Lena whispered, her voice shaking.
Mira quickly shook her head. “You need to calm down.” She turned toward the door before raising her voice. “I’m fine, Antonio,” she called out. “I’m just about to take a shower.”
“You still haven’t showered yet?” Antonio asked, sounding surprised.
“I had to gather my thoughts,” Mira replied, forcing a small laugh. “Seeing someone get shot isn’t exactly something I’m used to.”
Antonio was silent for a moment, and Mira could almost imagine him standing outside the door with that knowing expression he always wore whenever he suspected something was being kept from him.
“Well, you should probably hurry,” he finally said. “Boss wants to see you.”
Mira glanced at Lena again. The fear in her eyes had not disappeared, and neither had the nervous trembling of her hands.
“Did he say why?” Mira asked.
“No.”
“His he fine?”
There was a short pause before Antonio answered. “He’s awake. That’s about all I can tell you.”
Mira released a quiet breath of relief before she could stop herself. Lena noticed immediately. “You care about him,” she whispered.
Mira turned toward her. “Keep your voice down.”
Lena lowered her head, and Mira looked away, trying to ignore the uncomfortable feeling settling inside her chest.
“I don’t care about him,” she whispered, almost as though she was trying to convince herself more than Lena.
Another knock sounded against the door.
“Miss Voss?” Antonio called out
“Yes?”
“You’re talking to someone?”
Mira’s heart jumped. She immediately looked at Lena, who had gone completely still.
“No,” Mira replied quickly. “I’m talking to myself.”
There was silence on the other side before Antonio suddenly laughed. “You both are so much are like.”
Mira rolled her eyes despite herself. “Just give me a few minutes.”
“Alright, but don’t take too long. He specifically told me not to leave without you.”
Her brows pulled together. “Why?”
“Because apparently you’re stubborn enough to ignore him.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Neither do I,” Antonio replied dryly. “Five minutes.”
His footsteps slowly faded down the hallway, and Mira waited until she was certain he was gone before turning toward Lena. “You need to leave.”
Lena nodded quickly and moved toward the hidden passage, but before she opened it, she stopped and looked back at Mira.
“Miss Voss.”
Mira turned toward her. “What?”
“You shouldn’t trust Mr. Corvin.”
Mira’s expression tightened. “You said that already.”
“Am just trying to make sure.”
“Is there more you want to tell me?”
Lena hesitated, her fingers trembling around the handle. “I don’t know if he’s the monster everyone says he is.”Mira stared at her, waiting for her to continue. “But I also don’t know if he’s innocent.”
That answer unsettled her more than anything else Lena could have said.
“Then what do you know?”
Lena shook her head. “Not enough.” She opened the hidden door and looked at Mira one last time. “But I know you should be careful.”
Mira watched her disappear into the passage before quietly closing the door behind her. For several seconds, she stood completely still, her mind returning to everything Lena had told her..
Mira’s stomach twisted.
There was something hidden inside this mansion, something everyone seemed afraid to talk about, and now she was beginning to suspect that Salvatore wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.
She walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower, allowing the warm water to wash over her skin and carry away the last traces of blood. Yet no matter how long she stood beneath the water, her thoughts remained stuck on him. She remembered his face when he had been lying unconscious.
Mira pressed a hand against her chest and closed her eyes.
“This is ridiculous,” she whispered.
She couldn’t afford to become emotionally attached to Salvatore Corvin, not when she was supposed to be investigating him and not when she still didn’t know what kind of man he really was.
